Ian Heath based his Sergeant-at-Arms on a manuscript of c. 1300 at the time of Louis IX.

Could his source be 'Jonathan killing Philistines and eating honey' in The Queen Mary Psalter where there are 3 figures on the right, one of whom has a mace, or some other source?

I have found a better candidate as the source of Ian Heath's Sergeant-at-Arms

In an illumination of Louis IX setting out on the Seventh Crusade in a Chroniques de France ou de St Denis are 3 horsemen that fit the description. This is dated after 1332 & before 1350, but if this is not the source then it would be a similar scene in another Chroniques de France ou de St Denis manuscript.
