Royalty Free Artwork

Does anyone know of any good resources for obtaining royalty free military paintings, artworks, tapestries etc. for use in publications? The budget is tight for the project but I'd like to have some nice imagery included to liven up the book. Any pointers would be super!

You might try the Imperial War Museum site at http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections-research, they have hordes of pictures on 20th and 21st century conflict.

Likewise the National Army Museum at http://prints.national-army-museum.ac.uk/collection/2546/paintings.

It rather depends on what you're looking for, of course. And I'm not sure they're all free - but worth a look, I'd say.

One lead: search your subject on Wikipedia and checkout the public domain images they are using as illustrations.

Also: the Anne Brown Collection has an acceptable use policy: https://repository.library.brown.edu/studio/

'The Walters' Art Museum has loaded images of their holdings onto wikipedia as Public Domain.

The BNF bnf.fr has a lot of images but you have to know what you are looking for (in French), but see this thread for Napoleonics.

superiorofficers.com have 1000 royalty free prints for a fiver, in the back of the latest copy of Wargames illustrated.

Wikimedia Commons is a fantastic resource for this sort of thing. Everything there is free to use, but make sure you check the licence. Some are public domain, others require attribution or similar.
