somehow missed this one, but very impressive painting and basing. Yet more inspiration for my own WW1 project.

With so many figures I made an inroad over the weekend and managed to get through half the German infantry in Saturday morning.

Russians and Germans are all undercoated and have had their base coats applied. Cheated a bit and used my airbrush (which is how I did the first ever figs so only slightly cheating) only downside was dropping it when cleaning afterwards so a new needle now on order :(

Looking very good, Si.

Just out of interest which shade of grey did you use for those Germans. It looks very good and as I haven't yet started to paint my Germans I'd be very interested to know.

White undercoat helps. I use a single, thinned, wash of coat d'arms field grey 227 which then sits in the folds. I then add all the flesh (Vallejo) then the black elements of barrels etc, then VJ Beige Brown for wood and leather equipment. Then the blanket rolls are done with as close a match to the old vermin brown I can find. Helmet covers are desert yellow. Once finished I then use agrax earthshade which blends together and darkens the uniform a shade.

For jäger etc I add a little bit of green to the field grey

Inroads made on starting the second Brigade of German artillery, the Corps foot artillery up to 4 batteries

And the dismounted cavalry stands which I will probably do two dragoons on two bases and a horse holder and dismount on the other two bases

Leman

Thanks for the info Si. I'll make a note to follow that colour scheme as it seems to work really well.

That's the trouble with the Germans in WW1 - so many guns! But the unridden horse on the dismounted cavalry base looks a tad on the big side. Is that one of the the new crop?

Ummm, not noticed that until now.  No the unridden horse is the AU20 one.  It is massive compared to the WW1 sculpts (both new and old).  I only have WW1 in 10mm so can't tell you if the WW1 horses are smaller than the rest of the pendraken ranges.

As to guns the early divisions have a brigade of two regiments each of two battalions so at a stand a battery about 12 guns with 3 of those being 10.5cm Howitzers.  (72 pieces)  The Reserve divisions on the eastern front only get the one regiment though without the howitzers.  The Corps regiment is 4 batteries of four so might just go with 3 models.

The Russians are one brigade of two "divisions" each of three 8 gun batteries (48 pieces)  so 2/3 of the germans.  A model a battery means half that of the germans which isn't right so will go with 2 divisions each of 4 guns  (8:12) which will mean another 3 packs of guns for the Russians (and I still need another pack of 7.7cm for the Germans)

You can NEVER have enough guns....

Excellent stuff.

No eye candy to add at present.  Lots of figures all at the same stage as I want to get a lot of figures ready for a game in one go.  All are base coated using Halfords matt khaki spray which will speed this up. Just doing the boots on 108 Russian infantry before moving on to the blanket rolls.  I am using a light grey as the colour for the second division but only to separate the divisions.  I have found some references to red and blue shoulder boards between brigades but can't tell if that is dress uniform only.  Might try it out to see how it looks on a couple of figures and decide from there.

New pendraken order placed for:
90 Russian Infantry to make the last 7 battalions (32 in total) haven't decided on how to do handle the rifle brigades yet.
76.2mm Divisional guns to bulk out the battalions (decided on 1 per per 6 pieces) so 8 for each Russian Division (48 real) and 12 for each German regular Division (72 real).
122mm Corps Arty with the resulting spare guns be used to proxy in for Div artillery.  Both sides Corps battalions are about 16 guns each so 3 models will suffice (for the time being).
Regimental MG Coy

A couple of artillery pieces for the Germans for the second  battalion in the second division. I found a pack or two of the 10.5cm Howitzers so only need the 77mm pieces.

Si Tyler

Second russian infantry division has had some progress

First brigade nearly finished needs another two bases. The first regiment of that brigade has had the basing material added but not painted but means I have a bit of impetus.

The reason for the shortfall is that I have now added four bases per division for the Regimental HQs. Previously I just used a spare base or what ever was at hand.
Divisional support elements on the way. The RHQ bases for the second Div have had balding material applied and I gave managed to get around and flock all the existing bases

All the 76.2mm guns have had their barrels chopped down and the second divisional arty brigade just needs another three guns to finish, which are on order.

Very impressive, Si.
