7YW cavalry - how are you basing them?

The packs come with 15 cavalry. So, three bases of five cavalry is natural. But, then again, it seems odd to put as many hussars on bases when they didn't charge 'knee to knee'.

Is anyone basing five Cuirassier, four dragoons, and three hussars to a base, using the 'spare' figures for other bases?\

Perhaps other people are using something other than three bases per unit? Interested to hear what you are doing.

My basing is 4cm x 2cm for infantry and cavalry, with three bases per unit - so like Warmaster.

Not at all.
The figures are so cheap, that you can easily "waste" some of them. For me, most important is effect you want have.
Try to pack some unpaited figures on temporary bases and look at them. For wars like SYW and WSS, when cavalry charged in close order (knee to knee) your figures should look like "wall of horse", so five cavalrymen per 4cm width will do the justice.

AFAIK, in SYW both dragoons and cuirassiers use the same formations and tactics. As for hussars, I would put the same numbers on the base, but in more "irregular" manner - not in straight line. You can achieve this by using deeper bases, and placing some figures (e.g staff) forward.

I've based my SYW on 3 bases a la Warmaster - although I did 'up' the base sizes to 50x25 [mainly because I had a boatload of them at the time  :)]

I've always based my cavalry for WM & variants in 4s - although have dropped to 3 for 'skirmish' at times...

You can see pics of my SYW stuff here:

I base my cavalry for Might and Reason in following maner:
7 heavy cavalry figs per 6cm wide base so  its pretty dense (two such bases per unit)
It makes 14 heavy cavalry figures per unit. The one last figure from the pack I use as source for unit's casualty marker.

My Horse and Dragoons are based 3 to a 25mm square base.  As a comparison my line infantry are based 6 to a 25mm x 20mm base.

I haven't based Hussars yet but my plan is for 2 to a 25mm square base if they are irregular - Prussians may be a bit trickier as by the SYW they were trained for close order as well as open order.

This just shows how disparate a lot wargamers are. I base my cavalry up for Minden Rose with three figures to a 30mm square base, ecept non-Prussian hussars are two to a base. One pack makes a useful unit of five bases. When using Might and Reason I use two bases of Minden Rose to represent one of Might and Reason.

I do put 3 hussars to a base, but on a 30mm square they can be a bit ragged.

Surely it depends on how big the prototype units were? Prussian and Austrian Cuirassiers and Dragoons were organised in 5 squadron regiments, and the Prussian Hussars in huge 10 squadron units (although they tended to operate as two 5 squadron "battalions"). The French, on the other hand, fielded their cavalry in 2 squadron regiments and their dragoons in four. Within the squadrons for each nationality numbers could vary from under a hundred to nearly two hundred.

So how many men does your standard base represent? And what order are the men in? Military units are very rarely all the same size, even if they are of the same type.
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

My SYW are for the Western Theatre.

They are set up as four bases per battalion i.e. 24 figures to represent around 600 men - I do have some spare bases so some of the larger British/German battalions could be represented by five bases.

Cavalry are two bases per sqiadron so four bases for the common 2-squadron regiments of French, Hanoverian, Hessian and British Horse (and British dragoons) and eight bases for 4 squadron dragoon regiments (though these may well not always operate together).  Prussian dragoon regiments and hussar battalions could in theory be ten bases if I use them.

Gun batteries are represented by two models.

Obviously as the campaign season progresses numbers of men will fall but the same will be true on both sides.

I'm basing my 7YW for Black Powder and I'm reducing base sizes by half and using cm instead of inches for distance.  I've gone for a standard 25x25 base for all cavalry with 2 figures per base and 6 bases per unit.

The differences in fighting skill should be reflected in game stats and special rules, although I've only finished the French and got 2 units of Prussians finished so far, beer in the garden is much more fun than figures and my painting has almost stopped over the lst couple of months.
