The latest action in a campaign to relitigate the English Civil War sees General Waller with a small army in a strong defensive position trying to block the Royal Army marching to the relief of Oxford, which is under siege by the Earl of Essex.

IMG_3772.png Waller is deployed to the right.  Only part of his army is visible at the start, a line of infantry and guns along the ridge running parallel with a stream that the Royal troops will have to cross.

IMG_3785.png The Royalist left advances quickly at the top of the picture, aiming to work around Waller's flank.  The Royalist right ties itself in knots trying to sort out its line of attack.

IMG_3808.png The flanking movement causes Waller to pull back on his right.

IMG_3814.png Royalists finally get across the stream on their right.

The battle is paused, to be completed next week.  No melĂ©e has yet taken place and despite a lot of firing by the Parliamentary forces they have not managed to inflict a single hit!  A fuller report with more photographs is here.
