Battle of Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862
Played September 24, 2022, by the Gentlemen's Gourmet Wargaming Society
Table 1: This Batrep will be presented in two parts.  First for Table 1 and then for Table 2.

Attached is the map from a Brigade Fire and Fury scenario, Union on the right (east) and Confederates on the left (west).

And here is the Order of Battle for both.

We played two setups of the battle, with Table 1 having two Union players and one Confederate (another player could not make it).
The battle starts at 5:20 PM and lasts until the end of the 7:40 turn (eight 20-minute turns) with the last three turns in twilight.  All Union troops are on the table, deployed, while three brigades of AP Hill's division are marching up the road marked A.
Ewell's two brigades and battery on Cedar Mountain cannot move until turn 5 but can fire.

A special rule, based on the actual battle, had Garnett's Confederate brigade roll a die to see if it was surprised (which did occur in fact).  On this table Crawford's Union brigade attacking through the wheat field caught Garnett disordered which also reduced the rebel defensive fire.

Garnett was thrown back in the woods (the woods are at the edge of the wheat field and to the right.  The yarn marks a crestline). Crawford then continued and slammed into Carpenter's battery at the crossroad and eliminated it. The other brigade of Williams division, Gordan, moves through the woods to the eastern edge of the now trampled wheat field. (Once a unit moves through the wheat or corn fields, the terrain pieces are removed).

The brigades of Geary and Prince of Auger's division move west through the cornfield to the dry streambed.

The cavalry brigade of Bayard on the Union right flank moves behind Gordan.  On the Confederate left flank stands the renowned Stonewall brigade, now commanded by Ronald.  Union batteries on the crest behind the advancing Union troops bombard the Confederate lines and particularly the rebel guns.

Due to the retreat of Garnett's brigade, Jackson himself moves to Ronald's brigade and orders a shift to the right.  Taliaferro refuses his left flank.

Gordan in turn faces the new threat from Ronald.  Bayard moves to the edge of the wheat field near the intersection and Crawford attacks Taliaferrro and pushes him back. AP Hill's Thomas brigade, which had been marching south, reverses direction and forms on the left of Taliaferro.

Geary and Prince continue their march to the west, facing Early's brigade, but Confederate reinforcements are rapidly advancing toward the Crittenden farm Lane.

The Union batteries have all but silenced the rebel guns, only  Latimer's battery on Cedar Mountain continues to fire at Greene's brigade.

Ronald, on the Confederate left flank, charges Gordan, but is repulsed, broken.  At the same time, Thomas's brigade, in field column, attacks Crawford and pushes him back.  Pender's brigade moves over the crest and is attacked by Geary who is repulsed.

At the same time as Geary advances, Prince attacks Early.  Rebel fire disorganizes Prince who is repulsed broken from the combat and retreats to the dry streambed.  Banks sends forward battery F/4th US and advances the dismounted cavalry towards the intersection.

At this point, Pender attacks F/4th US and eliminates it.  Thomas attacks Crawford, breaks him and gets a break through.  Branch attacks Geary and pushes him back.  Early trying to reform cannot hold his brigade who sullenly retreats out of musket range.

The dismounted cavalry brigade enfilades Pender, causing several casualties with their breechloaders.  Further on the Union right flank Gordan destroys the Stonewall brigade.

At this point Thomas attacks the Union cavalry (causing the last Union casualty) and drives them back, but the Confederates have gone over their heavy casualty mark (24 stands).  This was Turn 4 and this table stopped.  The final count was 25 rebel casualties and 15 Union (which just put them over their heavy casualty mark).

Each side receives a victory point for causing heavy casualties, the Union receives Another As the Confederates have higher casualties and one additional for having a full unit over the crestline X – Y (see the map at the beginning).

Next, on to Table 2.
