I am only speaking Napoleonics and the scales I like, but I am pretty firmly in the 6mm terrain with 10mm minis camp.  I feel it breaks any notion the mind draws that the figures are 1:1.  Plus as Fred puts it, footprint (often less of it) is more important. Unless you are using very large bases at the battalion level (1:10 ratio) then it just doesn't work with your ground scale and measurements.  Or not using a ground scale at all, which to each their own but I couldn't do. It is all personal preference.  The only thing that is truly nails on a chalkboard for me is 28mm terrain with 28mm figures, and anything above a brigade on the table.  That barn is the same footprint as a German town...

That said, some periods can healthily get down to the 1:1-1:10 level on a 6x4 board with 10mm.  That is quite different and 10mm terrain would be very proper.  Depends on your ratio and ground scale, but very few Napoleonic battles can even reach close to that. One day I would really like to do obscure Napoleonic era theaters and Conquistador actions using 1:1 and 10mm, with some sort of modified Chain of Command style rules.

Anyway.  It is a bit splitting hairs overall.  But that is my .02

I had no idea that piece was modular.  Or the base was cast rubber.  That is very nice.  The few I have are solid and have openings like gardens where are least one base will fit, but that is certainly superior for playing.  Will have to check it out.  Should at some point make my own bases for the battlescale buildings I have.  Plenty enough to do as it is...

I have played WWII games with Chain of Command using 10mm figures, and 10mm terrain, where figure scale, ground scale and rule scale all match. This is a cool way of setting up a game, as you can use photo recon images to setup the table. It does give you a good feel of the empty battle field.

But this is a platoon a side on 6'x4' table - which is cool to do occasionally. But normally I'd much rather have 300 figures per side than 30!

What is funny, if you think about it, is people are discussing the merits between 6mm and 10mm but completely forgetting about the fact that most people (myself included) represent a settlement of hundreds of buildings with two or three miniature houses.

I don't mean to insult, criticise, write something that my autistic mind can't figure out the words I should be writing to describe what I mean. I just wanted mention, what others have said before about representing settlements in miniature.

Anyway. Streetgang, those are some lovely painted models and miniatures  =D>
Rimmer: "Aliens."

Lister: "Oh God, aliens... Your explanation for anything slightly peculiar is aliens, isn't it?

Rimmer: "Well, we didn't use it all, Lister. Who did?"

Lister: "Rimmer, aliens used our bog roll?"

Finished up the Russian village and decided to snap some pics to show the bare footprint/modularity and size comparison next to some 10mm figures:

My argument has always been that if you can see 30 miniatures and believe they are a formation that is 1500 strong in real life then why can't you look at a cluster of 3 houses and see it as a settlement of 150 buildings?

In which case it makes more sense to me to use figures and buildings of the same scale, where possible.

People are free to use what they want of course, it's not like the Wargames Police are going to kick in your front door and drag you off! :)

If it floats your boat to use 3mm scale buildings and 54mm scale figures then I absolutely uphold your right to do so.

But I reserve the right to think you are weird.  =) ;D :d

The final installment (for now at least) of the TBM scenery, here is a small Italian village. This is a one piece casting which I found a bit trickier to paint and wouldn't be as gaming friendly as the detached buildings to deploy units:
