Base size for support to put into Pendraken buildings?

Hi everyone,

I am painting up WW2 figures, vehicles, and buildings. Looking at the buildings, where there are spots to put AT guns, artillery and AA. I wonder if any of you have experience making support base sizes that will fit into those. 25mm square looks like it may be a bit too big.

I would like to think about this now, so I can potentially save lots of rebasing  :)

Cheers,

What buildings are you using, Neil? Are you talking about bunkers and gun-positions? Most 10mm resin buildings are solid, so you wouldn't be able to get anything in them. N Gauge model railway buildings in card or plastic might be used, but they'd need a certain amount of modification.  :-\

A lot of time he they are domestic buildings the extra space can be used for trees, gardens and fences, just to give some flavour. Military buildings can have barbed wire or other stuff scattered around them.
You can always mount them off centre and them put a track running past on the open side too.
Take a look at the timecast gallery page for examples...

Thanks for the response. I'm thinking of things like this Fire Control Bunker

I guess that AT goes in those outside emplacements (one is hidden behind the bunker in this photo).

I am basing for BKC., where support gets a 25mm square base. That looks a bit big to get into those positions. So I'm wondering if some other BKC player has already thought this through and gone for some other, smaller, size for mortars/hmgs/ATs. Perhaps a round base would work. I will try that.

Cheers,

If you have a look at the page for buildings, trench systems etc. you will see there are spots to put in support weapons and infantry

http://pendraken.co.uk/Resin-Scenics-and-Trees-c25/Resin-Scenery-sc201/

Look at the fire control bunker (PS25). Either side is a spot to put in an artillery piece. I can fit a 25mm round base in there (very snugly). I guess the prepared positions (trench systems) were intended for infantry to be slotted in e.g. PS26 Observation and command trench. Then there is PS27 Tobruk type MG bunker, type 1.

Actually, you can get 25mm round bases into those buildings/trenches (but often not 25mm square). So you are OK for support bases.

Are any BKC players using these buildings and, if so, how are their figures based?

Sorry for the double post. You can see that I've bunkers and bases on my mind. This is what is holding up basing my BKC armies at the moment.

Neil - first there is no set base size in BKC my 10mm units are on 40x20.

Second - putting the figures in the building leads to loss. Did it with some 10mm stuff during a crossfire game - disappeard for 6 months.

Best method is to either place on top, or take the building off and place a ground foot print on the table.

The army has the same problem with pubs.

4cm x 2cm is the warmaster size. That is a good reason to shift to it. I will ask Leon what he does.

We cast them up and send them out...?!   :D

We've not painted or based anything in years, Dave was trying to get some tanks painted up recently, but they've been left on the side and have gathered a nice coating of dust...  :(

We've always recommended 40x20mm as a nice standard size, so I'd go with that.

The stars are aligned for 40mm x 20mm. I made up a load of 50mm x 20mm. So I can chop off the excess and get a bunch of 1cm stands as a bonus.

I think I might have to make up some small, fortification friendly, stands just to sit in some of the buildings which are a bit too small for 40mm x 20mm. They can stand in for the larger stands when needed.

This is the sort of thing I obsess about. I suppose it is the memory of the pain of rebasing :)

Or, if you use them regularly, you might just fix the models permanently into the gun-positions. That's the most realistic option of all.

Oh, and I share your pain at rebasing.  :'(

I have actually started basing now. I cut out bases of all different sizes to see what worked best. In the end I needed them a bit deeper than 2cm, to get a bit of a tuft or other fluff on the base without it looking too crowded. So I went for 4cm wide by 2.5cm deep for infantry. The support (HMG, Mortar, AT) are all 25mm square.

I am painting BKC armies to sell. At the moment I'm just painting up a contingent from each force, starting with Russian and Germans. So I need based figures to photograph, together with some of the beautiful buildings - which I've just finished. The rest can be unbased until customers let me know what they need.

For myself, since I've fallen in love with these figures. I will use the described basing system, and have vehicles on bases just a bit bigger than their floor space. For buildings, I will make up extra small stands to show when they are occupied. That is a cheap solution and it will look pretty.
