English people with secret knowledge of your glorious past: I have in the distant way-back-when eaten of a delicious pudding made with raspberry jam, suet, dark sugar, and I know not what else. Steamed, rich, dark, and achingly "I know I'll regret this tomorrow, but give me a third helping with double cream" - ish. The cook was English and set very high standards about what he ate, but I've lost contact with him.

Any ideas? I seem to remember the name "Guards' Pudding", but Google hasn't helped much.

That's your standard steam pudding - jam or treacle (actually gold syrup).

Bog standard pud of every English household.

Google search, loads of recipes some with suet or more likely now a days standard sponge mix

This one was really special. I've eaten many a suet pudding that one struggled to force down one's throat.

Alternatively, there is jam roly-poly which I haven't made in ages. Possibly just as well since there's only me to eat it and I tend to serve it with Cornish clotted cream!

I use Nigella's jam roly-poly recipe

Sadly, I doubt it, nowadays.
