I am much taken with words and games about words, and am working my way through 1970's editions of "Call My Bluff" with the inestimable Robert Robinson, and the erudite Frank Muir. It interests me how the use of words goes in and out of fashion. It is also a great way of expanding ones vocabulary.

From the edition I'm watching:
Futon - had them confused
Tolpatchery - the common infantry as mentioned by Carlyle.

Couple of colleagues having problems with the Bus. Apparently the driver, among other faults, has managed to get lost...

I've had to act as navigator on buses and coaches in the past, either solo or part of a navigation team. Always fun when there's more than one way to go and the navigation team is split on which route the bus should be on.

Had it happen once to me many years ago - the driver took a turn that was wrong for that particular bus number (but was a valid route for a slightly different number) the level of out-cry from the passengers within seconds of going the wrong way, rather quickly alerted him to the need to course correct.

I've had to re-direct a bus before, many years ago when it got lost due to a diversion. Recently a bus on a route by us took the wrong turn and had to do a u-turn, which was fun to see!

Strangely that is the term we use for the art of repairing a toll road without closing it.
