You can tell he's a southerner from the chewing tobacco, dungarees and moonshine. Welcome Kentish man. Open the Pandora's box of Pendraken at your peril.

Welcome, Steve!
Although born in Toronto, Canada, my family is from across the pond.  My great-grandfather was born in Maidstone and was a veteran of the 24th Foot.  I'm a little Zulu War mad and if you have any questions in that area I'd love to help out.

I didn't realise there was much south of the Thames - my maps still have " there be dragons" on a white area.   :)

As for questions ask away.

Wotcha Steve, welcome to the forum.

There is civilization south of the Thames, I should know because I'm in that neck of the woods.

That's interesting about your great-grandfather, I live in Maidstone so if there's anything I can help with on the genealogical front let me know. (I'm only about 10 mins walk from the County Library). About the 24th Foot, I was under the impression that most of them were recruited from ex-pat Welsh from the Midlands area -Birmingham in particular.

Hi All

Thanks for the welcome - not sure about the Wyndhams, maybe the Cheeseham Krakens instead as they sound a little more savoury (groan)  ;)

Yeh ... I'm a Southerner ... dungarees in the wash at the moment as we're having the annual bath  :D

Interesting news about the Zulu War. Will probably be asking questions about colonials at some point, thanks for the offer!  :)

Cheers

Hey there Subedai!
My great-grandfather was born in Kent but the family was centred in London, White Chapel to be precise, where his grandfather was a famous Baptist minister.
great-grandfather was in another regiment, the 56th or something, and when the disaster at Isandlwana called for replacements to rebuild the 1st Battalion, 24th Foot, he was transferred.  The story goes he was drunk and disorderly and under arrest when the call came and they were just trying to get rid of him!    :-[
Anyway, he was sent to South Africa, the transport was wrecked off the coast and they had to wade ashore.  Chelmsford then marshalled his forces, marched on Ulundi and ended the war.  As it happens the 1st Btn. 24th was chosen to guard the camp so they took no part in the action.

Excuse me, lads, your inferiority complex is showing again. Maybe you're just inferior?

Hi, Steve, welcome to the forum. If you get any more trouble from these northern riff-raff just threaten to cut off their subsidies.  ;)
