Yes, the Ian Heath illustration 126 shows a man dressed in a checked sleeved-tunic. The helmet reference is to the Gundestrup cauldron:

126 notes that nobles and their retainers might wear mail. The mail would look like 124 or 125.

I haven't seen any evidence for long-sleeved hauberks until later periods. The Romans credited the Celts with the invention of mail but we have to remember that it was very expensive to produce and may have been seen as a waste to protect arms especially if a warrior was protected with a shield as well.

Cheers, Michael

From Stephen Allen, Osprey, Celtic Warrior: "Mail-shirts were an even rarer sight on the battlefield than helmets. They were worn only by noble warriors of the very highest status."

I can always change them at 'whenever' stage.....And give a bit more variation if 'The Man' wants. ;)

I'm beginning to wonder if my dreadful perception of two dimensional images, has been 'having a laugh' at me ?
Looking again at the line drawing of the celt cavalryman........
Am I turning a tiny, tiny check pattern into chain-mail ? (And seeing chain-mail because it's mentioned in the text.?)

I'll ask if Leon will pop the cavalry back down......I can change soon the mail shirts into completely plain shirts.
Only take me a few minutes for each one.
Won't be a problem at all.

Cheers - Phil.

Update !! ;)

Yep !!....We're going to go with that, and I'll turn them into 'plain' shirted bods......and at the same time do a mounted command group, once poor old Leon's had a chance to turn the originals into metal masters and I can have a couple of sets. :-bd
Lots of thanks to Lemmey for his assistance today !....I've got it sussed now (I hope... ;))
Cheers - Phil.

Wow Phil - those are just spectacular.  You do amazing work.

Regarding the war chariot: The old one (the structure) is really good, it only need a couple of good new horses and new crew, imho. And a yoke for the horses! ;)

AT LAST ! ;)

About to tweak some master metal cavalry, so that they have plain shirt/tunics...(as opposed to the mail they had before)..and turn the originals into a command group.

Couple of comments regarding the command bods, which I'd appreciate any input on.

Intentions are.....

Chieftain.....WILL have a mail shirt, as he's 'upper class'.....Going to give him a sword, rather than a spear, so he stands out a bit.
Musician and Standard Bearer......Plain tunics.
Musician will have an animal horn shaped horn, rather than the elongated 'thingy' that I've given the foot musician.

Anything that sounds wrong.....Shout ! ;)
I want to try and get these right first go.....and they won't take too long once I've started them. ;)

Cheers - Phil.

Sounds good to me Phil.

Animal horn for the musician sounds about right too. I'd have thought the carnyx (the elongated 'thingy') would be too unwieldy to use on horseback but, since I'm neither a musician nor a horseman, treat that comment with the suspicion it deserves!

There are 100 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data

Im looking forward to the completion of this range can't wait to get my hands on them

take care

I know I shouldn't think of things from an aesthetic point of view TOO much  :-[.....But I think the carnyx (Thank you 'I'  ;))..would look completely wrong on horseback, as well as causing casting problems.
Surely it would have been far too unwieldy to use on a horse anyway. :-\

I suppose the chap could have turned it upside down and used it as an early polo mallet (?) to batter severed heads around the battlefield.

Seriously though, thanks for the input ! :)
Cheers - Phil.

Very nice. Can see my early Imperials becoming an invasion of Britain force.

Sounds spot on, Phil.

Somebody somewhere does think a poor guy can blow a carnyx while riding a horse!  ;D
