Title: What ruleset do you use in your last game?
Post by: jchaos79 on 08 January 2013, 05:21:07 PM
That's the question.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?
2) What armies were confronted?
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

First to ask first to answer:

1) Warmaster Medieval
2) Gravelinas battle,  French Empire vs Spanish Empire
3) Ohh, yes
4) No, I 've been playing warmaster variants for years.

1) Blitkrieg commander
2) american troops versus wehrmacht in normandy
3) very much
4) yes actually, as it was my friend who set it up and he uses bkc, i use bkc II (not much difference, but i find the splitting of AP and AT attacks to be fundamental enough to call it another rule set)

1) kings of war
2) elves vs orcs and goblins

1.  Rules of engagement

2.  1944 Panzergrenadiers v a Red Horde

3.  Not entirely sure :-\ as the defender I spent long periods of the game watching the horde move up on me without being able to do much about it. I also seemed to spend quite a bit iof the game inactive and having things done to me without being bale to do much back although a lot of that boiled down to some truly awful dice rolling too. I think I need to re-read the rule book and figure out how the game mechanics work when in defence to be able to understand the game better.

4.  We were both RoE virgins - so more than happy to give them another go

It was teh beginning of December when I played last, bit of a shock from when I used to play EVERY week!

1) Flames of War
2) Late War Guards Churchills vs Panzergrenadiers, (quick break for a game with Grants vs a German detachment in a town mid war), then SS King Tiggers, Panzerkompanie, then finally Stuggs...
3) Definitely!
4) Been playing since 1st edition, so YUP!

Ask me again on Thursday and I'll have played Black Powder!

2)  Allied Saxon & Attecotti vs allied Picts & Land Raiders (Irish)
3)  Yes
4)  Yes and they're very good indeed.  We had sorted out the rules by about 3 turns in.  Simple, intuitive, great fun.

1 - Friends home grown rules.
2 - Austrians and Reiches Armee vs Prussians at the Battle of Strehla, Seven Years War. Details of the game can be found below:

3 - Very happy with the rules and they felt nice and simple.
4 - This is about the 4th time we've played with these rules and they work very nicely.

Several of us here in Toronto have 3mm armies too from O8, they're really good models, and incredibly cheap too.

My latest game was last night, using Bolt Action. You can read about it on my blog: http://nickthelemming.wordpress.com/

Here's a pic of the battlefield towards the end:

The Battlefield : miniature modern warfare.
2) What armies were confronted?
Modern Us, versus Modern SAS, versus Talibans.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?
Yeah, it's pretty straight forward. Action points.
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?
Third, I guess.

1) Black Powder (last night)  ;)
2) French II & III Corps attacking Prussian VIII Corps in 1870
3) Definitely, we only looked inside the main rules about twice in 3.5 hours!
4) Definitely used a lot, it falls open on the 'blunder' table!

1) Locally modified Regimental Fire and Fury.
2)  Austrians and Prussians for 1866, battle was a development of Skalitz with two Austrian Corps (VIII and IV) and one Prussian (V + one brigade of VI). About 3-3500 Pendraken figures deployed.
3) Yes, increasingly, but still ironing out teething problems (in the modifications, not the basic rules).
4) Have now used them seven times, and look to do more for some scenarios from Koniggratz.

The One Ring
Heroes against Goblins and wargs
Yes enjoyed it, the heroic types got a bit possed and needed a bit of help from a wandering Ranger who had been tracking the Goblins ;D ;D ;D
First time used it in anger, read it many times and ran multiple combats to practice the rules. We had a few teething troubles until we realised we were misunderstanding one of the rules.

1) Battle Group Kursk
2) Russians attacking Germans
3) Easy enough to pick up, lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of dice rolling... some of which I'm not sure is quite necessary. My jurys is still out and I think I might need a few more games to see if I like them or not.
4) Yes. BGK Virgin
Title: Re: What ruleset do you use in your last game?

1. BKC

2. Japanese v. 14th Army. Not sure if a ruleset designed chiefly for armour action is totally suitable for a largely infantry game, though.

3. Jury's still out. Fairly simple to use, but lacks unit structure. Ideally, I'd like BKC command and control grafted on to FOW unit structure. I prefer BKC attrition rates, however.

4. Yes, but we'll give them a fair crack.

3.Very straightforward rules giving an exciting game with a definite outcome, all on a 4'x3' table.

SeaWar: 1805 (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/142232/seawar-1805)
Generic forces, but pretty much British vs. French/Spanish (Napoleonic)
Not quite happy with the rules, but getting there, as this was my first game.

Played with Tumbling Dice 1:4800 Napoleonic warships. Teeny but rather nice... I just played out a simple encounter to figure out the rules. No conclusive victory, I reset the game 3 or 4 times when I got rules wrong. French seemed to be losing owing to flagship surrendering when the ship's cat was taken out by cannon fire (yes, that really is in the rules - symbolising any number of more realistic reasons for surrender during combat).

43 people answered, and played very very different games. I could not say there is main played ruleset.

I have to admit there are a lot of rules set I did not even to exist among the ones played. I think that if you invest time playing with them they are worth. I have to make some google search :)

Latest club game 1859:

* smallest unit is regiment/gun battery

* for French/Sardinians v. Austrians in Northern Italy

* gives a relatively quick game and subunits disappear quite quickly

* rulebook is excellent on background info, tactics, scenarios, OOBs etc.

2) Austrian vs French, Bavarian, Prussian and, British!!! it was an attempt to generate interest in the period for the wargaming centre.
3) while the game turned out to be enjoyable it did give rise to some strange on table results.
4) No had used them a long time ago before leaving the hobby for a while. This was the second outing for these forces using these rules some revision may be required as infantry seem to ignore the threat of cavalry and columns are all powerful.

1) General Quarters III A3 (plus house rules)
2) RN v KM in fog shrouded fjords - radar ticking, ultra close range panic (on occasion the torpedoes didn't have a chance to arm prior to contact.*)
3) Great fun and very tense
4) By no means, although as we're constantly tinkering they're sort of new each time  :D

*which is bad news when you're aboard HMS Hardy and the gloom shrouded shape in the fog turns out to be Scharnhorst. . .

1) kings of war! now heavily modified with house rules to give random activation and simultaneous combat
2) Dark elves vs Araby
3) great game, total blood bath, with several fun incidents
4) ( Is this was it the first time using the rules?) then no, been playing KoW a lot, but the house ruled version is quite new, but seems fairly stable.

Win for the Brits after the Churchills defeated the PzIVs and the Germans had no chance of reaching the objective.
Been using them for years and still love them.

It is International Extraterrestrial and paranormal tactical Team. It is s set of rules I am writing that are about 95 percent complete. It is skirmish level gaming. If you have played XCOM that gives you an idea of the genesis of the game, but it goes beyond that. It is really a sort of Pulp/Horror/Sci-fi/WWI/WWII/MODERN COMBAT all rolled into one. I have three genres in which you can game - G1 is 1900 to 1930ish, G2 is 1930 to 1960ish and G3 is 1960ish to 2020. The games are "normally" run with a GM fighting as the bad guys, with the players all operating InEPT Teams. However, it is possible to allow several InEPT Teams to fight against one another or even allow alien or monster teams to fight against the InEPT Teams. Really depends on what the club wants. The guys locally here love it and it has pushed aside Flames of War, Bolt Action and Pony Wars as the number one preference. It is designed for 28mm figs but you can use any scale really. Game table can be as small as  2 x 2 or as large as you can accommodate. Games are predicated on a victory system based on either achieving goals or elimination of the Alien or Paranormal threat. Most recently we have done a lot of WWII stuff and will be delving into the WWI or Genre 1 to ensure some play testing of that genre is complete. The game moves quickly and you can play a few small games in an afternoon or a large one in the same time frame. We have played with a max of 5 teams (each team is between 4 and 12 figs) versus about 250 zombies - what a hoot! :) So that's what InEPTT is.

I think this is in response to my KoW post

The main thrust of the house rules are:
1) activation is by unit. We have a colour per side and place a  bead in a bag for each unit, draw a bead, and that player then chooses a unit to activate. It then does it's full actions

2) in combat, both sides fight, either unit that takes damage must take a nerve test. Both can rout

There are some more details to clarify the details of the interaction if the above.
And of course we play with 10mm figures.

Drop me a PM and I can email the details if you want.

1. They Couldn't Hit and Elephant
2. Americans and...er...um...you know, the other ones...Americans.
3. Fun and frustrating at the same time, but then we were fighting in the middle of a wilderness with random entry points for both sides!
4. We have played the rules a few times now and we are starting to get a hang of the mechanisms so the game runs more smoothly.

2. Japanese v. Anglo-Indians night action.

Drums and Shakos (the Skirmish version)

Flintloque Orcs vs Elves (really Brits v Frech)

Yeah happy with these rules, nice and easy to pick up and a doddle to play solo

Had them about 2 years, started messing around with them about a couple of weeks ago.

Drums and Shakos Large Battles

French vs Austrians (pendraken 1809 range)

Same comments as above

Got them about a year ago, dug them out again and the French got another hiding last week.

Last Night's Game:

1) Poor Bloody Infantry v3 (amended for hex tiles)
2) British v German, 1944 Normandy
3) Yes but we were a bit rusty
4) No - although it's been many months since we last played regularly

result:
Comprehensive British victory as the German attack was brought to a halt by a pair of well placed and dug in 6pdrs supported by a brace of MMGs - the supporting rifle platoons barely fired a shot

Last Game:

1) Poor Bloody Infantry v3 (amended for hex tiles)
2) British v German, 1944 Normandy
3) Yes (and we are less rusty now)
4) Not at all

result:
Comprehensive German victory as the British defence crumbled in the face of well handled combined infantry/armour tactics, this time the 6pdrs didn't have the same luck, being swept by concentrated MG fire before tank and infantry teams crushed the remaining infantry - the reinforcement platoon had little option other than to cover the retreat of the few remaining groups as the Germans settled into defensive positions around the crossroads and objectives.

Yes, my first game with them, and I thought they played well, once you got your head around the battle board, the rest was simple. Unit of Ceorl bowmen beating two elite, tooled up Huscarls three times in combat (my opponets dice were shocking, mine were AWESOME), then retreating to hold the sacred ground made them men of the match!

Questions.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?
2) What armies were confronted?
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

Answers

1) Spearhead, in 6mm, WW2 scale divisional set. Actually about a reinforced regiment per side.
2) "Early" WW2 American - late '42, with Grants and half tracks and NGFS. Versus Vichy French - so R-35's, Char D1's, 75mm "crash-bangs" and infantry with rifle grenades. Grants are unsurprisingly very hard to deal with... when your opponents AA halftracks are better than your "MBTs"....
3) Very, myself. less so for rest of players maybe as they'd not played so recently and were caught out by the differences to BKC.
4) Nope, not for anyone :) But we are coming back to Spearhead & Rhys Batchelors excellent scenario generation system after playing BKC for ages.

Really good game, stalwart French defense nearly saw the Yanks break as their green troops took a real pounding from the experienced and motivated French Colonials despite massive materiel superiority! If our tanks hadn't been like chaff to the reaper of the Yanqui Panzers...

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?

Black Powder from warlord games

2) What armies were confronted?

Seven year war prussian and Austrian

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?

Very much so, I enjoy the command rules and simplicity

4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

Second time, we played the same battle as the first but on a bigger table, it's made a massive difference!

I think BP gives a very good game, but you are right about all the flummery. In our club we have produced short summary sheets for the SYW to great effect, although the Austrians still keep getting battered. Couldn't even win Kolin.

Which would suggest that the rules aren't that good in fact. First rule of thumb for any set is "do they generally duplicate historical results?" Unless you're writing fantasy, of course.

Unnecessary exception. If they don't produce something resembling reality, they're no good. In all cases.

As my wife remarks, you can't play "The Awful Green Things from Outer Space" twice in one year. And that was after winning.

The Pike & Shotte rules produce very in keeping feeling games, but when we tried Black Powder for Nappies it wasn't great - units had too much speed, & felt too easy to manoeuvre. They are billed as a tool kit, and your supposed to tinker a bit for detailed feel and flavour, but whilst we play P&S quite a bit (with some specific tweaks across the periods!), we shifte back to Shako for Nappies.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?

DBA v3 - together with a campaign ruleset we found on the interweb.
Basically we're playing a sort of boardgame for the strategic moves, interspersed with DBA battles when the armies come out to fight.

2) What armies were confronted?

Punic Wars, so Rome and Carthage.
In the campaign setting we're playing, it also means that the forces you have in each battle can vary in size and constitution depending on previous losses, what core and allied troops you've managed to raise, and so on.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?

DBA – certainly.  We've been playing DBx for many years and are quite familiar with them.  The tweaks to the latest version of DBA have created a very good ruleset that reproduces historical engagements very well.  We've played a few historical battles so far, and they's played out very similarly to what we know about those battles for real (although not always with the same results!)

In the two campaign battles we had last session, Carthage attacked Roman Sicily with superior numbers and the Roman army was beaten and forced to withdraw to Brutia, and a large Roman army marched out to attack a small Carthaginian army that crossed the Alps and was steadily recruiting local Gallic tribes.  Hannibal wasn't at the battle though and the Carthaginians were forced to retreat with great loss.

That said, Carthaginian armies are now marauding around Rome while the Senate adopts a Fabian policy...they do have a small Roman force in Hispania though, steadily trying to capture territory off of Carthage to replace the lost lands in Italy!

As for the campaign rules we're using – very good.  They're producing historical frictions and giving a seriously tense and historically accurate campaign so far.

4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

Nope.
Played DBA, DBM, DBR, and HotT for many years.  Great little set of rules.
Haven't tried DBMM in anger though.

Luddite - been out of the DBx loop for several years now, are the DBA v3 rules published? Can't see anything online to say they are, just endless "coming soon" messages.

I'm not sure Ithoriel.  We have a 'test' version (available online) which is the latest version (as far as we can tell).

It fixes all the little problems with the old DBA rules and pushes it past HotT as the best in the DBx stable.  The DBABB ('big battle') variant works especially well and gets near the old DBM games without the mind-melting fiddliness (which i rather liked).

To be honest I am a rubbish wargamer and seldom win. I don't blame the rules here. Anyway what on earth would be the point of wargaming if the rules engineered a historical result despite the skills, or lack of, of the players.

1. Space hulk (classic version)
2. Marines v's Genestealers
3&4. Very comfortable but haven't played for years. I was GM, the players, the 6 year old and 4 year old not as comfortable. 6 year old daughter felt the aliens worked better moving around as groups of friends (but was quite gleeful in eating marines). The boy felt combat resolution should be based on saying Dakka, Dakka, Dakka! and Kaboom! rather than dice rolls  :D

Went on to lead them through a couple of games of Talisman: Dungeonquest, great fun!

1. Heroes of Normandie by Devil Pig Games
2. Panzergrenadiers vs US Infantry
3. The rules are a dog's breakfast but the mechanisms work so well and almost everything you need to know is on the counters or the map board so after 4 games I'm happy I know what I'm doing.
4. 4th game. Hopefully many more to come!

Often described as a figure game for people who don't like figures, this game just cries out to have the counters replaced with bases of 10mm figures ... that way madness lies!!

1. Impetvs
2. Classic Roman V Gauls
3. Really enjoyed the rules. Played well. Good fun.

2. SYW Prussians v. Austrians in 15mm.

3. The rules have been around since the late eighties so, yes, we do know them.

4. It was nice to have my old SYW figures out on the table again. And we still find little tweaks to add to the rules.
Title: Re: What ruleset do you use in your last game?

Simple Impetus - no you won't have heard of them. They are a development of Basic Impetus by one of my regular opponents. Major changes are as follows:

1) MASSED UNITS - a double depth unit receiving the double depth bonus, but the VBU is for the WHOLE unit. Used mainly for pike.
2) OPTIONAL COMMAND CONTROL  - is your army Professional (Imperial Rome), Social (French 100 Years War), or Charismatic (Alexander's Macedonian army).
3) MANDATORY CHARGE - fresh impetuous troops (feudal knights) must charge if able to contact in a normal move.
4) EVADE - S, LC and GCL can evade if contacted by slower troops.

That's about it. Some factors have been adjusted so that there are just shortbows for example rather than type A and Type B. He also came up with the simplest four army campaign ever, which can be virtually never ending. We played Italian communal period - Milan, Papal States, Germans, Florence - Game one Florence played the Germans and was beaten. Game two The winning Germans now played either Papacy or Milan (decided by die roll; it was the Milanese army). Milan won. Loser now had to play Florence or Papacy. This time it was Florence again who beat Milan. Now Florence had to take on the Papacy. The Papal States won. The idea is to try and win three battles consecutively with the same army to achieve Hegemony.

2) Rebels, Imperials and Smugglers (six players)
3) Eventually, the other five have been playing constantly since the rules came out. Once I got the hang of it, it was a great game (even if I kept miscalculating distances and bumping into other fighters)!
4) I've played once before, a one on one game vs a friend, this was massively bigger (asteroids, adrift Correllian Corvette, tooled up smugglers, stealth ships, we had the whole nine yards)!

I lost three of my four ships vs the clubs most experienced player, but learned a huge amount (and eventually got two of his)!

Spee took an engine hit game one that slowed her right down, and lost her fire turret. Eventually she was silenced.

1. Maurice - the start of an imaginations campaign.

2. Grand Duchy of Hoysee (modelled on SYW Austrian), v. Grand Marquisate of Flamboyance (modelled on SYW French)

3. In this campaign each army started with 90 points plus 2 randomly drawn national characteristics and 2  randomly drawn notables. Flamboyance drew Koreczki, Polish cavalry leader, and Duklevich, a Baltic leader of irregulars, with the national characteristics of oblique and professional train. Hoysee drew the spy and an attack of the gout with the national characteristics of  massed formation and cavaliers. To throw a spanner in the works, in the next battle I must face the army of the avaricious Bishop of Keller (modelled on the Prussian army) with the notable Bragge and the spy, and the national characteristics of cadence and artillery school. As the Marquis of Flamboyance I scored a marginal victory over Hoysee and took control of Kleine Hoysee, a very useful river port, which unfortunately borders the Bishopric of Keller. My victory, though, was hard fought and bloody and I have had to replace many trained troops with conscripts, although two of my units rose to elite status.

4. The game rattled along quite quickly and was quite tense towards the end when Hoysee put in a massed infantry assault on the Flamboyance left wing infantry and routed half of them from the field, but earlier success on the right wing had secured a marginal victory for Flamboyance, when the sun set owing to the cards running out. The strength of these rules lies in the imaginations campaign of at least three nations. They do not work well as a two nation campaign and I think they are less successful as historical rules. The three or more campaign does not require three players. The loser of the previous battle simply takes on the non- played army in the next battle. The war ends when one army (not player) wins two consecutive battles.

Pike and Shotte does allow for a lot more tweaking, but I have found with Black Powder that an additional sheet of reminders is necessary owing to the sheer size of the rulebook and the very wordy prose which is used.

I know that BP is a toolbox but some of the basic elements are so strange to me that tweaking everything I don't like would simply produce a whole new set of rules. Since there already are enough rules that I find satisfying I see no use in doing so. For ACW I'll stick to the old and trusted Fire & Fury system!
(To give you an example of these ,to me, weird rules: losing no stands or even effectiveness of a unit untill that unit is completely detroyed... and the reason they give in the book is: you spent so much time painting these figures it would be a pity if you had to remove them. I mean, come on...serious?!?  :( )

Cheers,
Rob

We're pretty much convinced by no figure removal systems these days - feels much better, te unit keeps fighting till it breaks, or is forced to retire and recover. Encourages you to pay attention and try to rotate units out and bein in the reserves! It was more the speed and ease I manoeuvre in BP we found jarring.

That said Fire & Fury is our default ACW set :D

That's why I prefer the Fire and Fury system; a unit loses stands and at a certain point it start to be less effective also; that's the way it should be in my opinion. Certainly a unit will keep on fighting till it breaks but the more men you lose the less muskets you'll be able to bring to bear, not to mention the mounting fatigue that combat brings and the way in which it affects your effectiveness. I think the overall effects on units are therefore much better represented in the F&F system as in BP. But then again; it's all about preferences. I can see the appeal of BP to a lot of gamers; it just doesn't appeal to me...

Cheers,
Rob

My ACW default for my 15mm armies is RF&F, but my default for Italian Wars is Impetus , where a unit (other than pike) is a single base. The base gradually loses cohesion until it disappears from the table. Two quite different systems which give very satisfying results.
Title: Re: What ruleset do you use in your last game?

When you start to rack up the disorders and casualties in P&S you start to get very wary about committing to action - we've foun it replicates that very well. And as things get painful, they start to get more and more painful and... It replicates the loss of effectiveness due to casualties very well (we've found). You can keep fighting but to get stretched an stretched and stretched until you break.

That said we play F&F in preference to BP for ACW as it doesn't feel right  :D

Edit: we usually play Impetus for Italian Wars as well - really rate them as rules!

Well I don't know what's going on but I've just won my second game of the week. This time I was a Saxon warlord, attempting to put down roots in a new land, when a bunch of dastardly Britons turned up to try and push me and my kin out. Their warlord, Arthur Ucipius, objects to us having been invited over to do all the hard graft here and then, when I try and become part of the community with my kith and kin wants to kick us all out. Enough to say, he was given short shrift.

So, it was Dux Bellorum, an excellent development of Glutter of Ravens, in which an early Romano-British army, complete with noble cavalry, fought an early Saxon warrior army, with three noble warbands. Although the Saxons were surrounded on all sides they fought like demons (and used an awful lot of leadership points in defence) to whittle the Britons down until they cleared off. Dux Bellorum produce a very enjoyable and quite tense game, which is also a doddle to learn. Recommended. sorry folks but I must remember to take my camera down the club.

That's the question.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?
2) What armies were confronted?
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

1) Square Bashing v1 (we had a copy of v2, but only one of the four of us has read it).
2) 1914 BEF 2nd Division vs German 17th Division across three bridges at The Mons Canal.
3) Been 8 years, but yes.
4) No, but it's been a long long time since we did!

(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc94/madlemmey/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps6d4c3614.jpg) (http://s214.photobucket.com/user/madlemmey/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps6d4c3614.jpg.html)

Two Brigades of British held the canal line, backed by a hmg battery and 9 batteries of artillery and one heavy battery. The Germans had 12 infantry units, a jaeger unit, five hmgs, 9 77mm batteries and 3 heavy howitzers, a unit of Uhlans and a unit of dragoons.

BEF held three bridges, the preliminary bombardment knocked out one British battery and two battalions of Brits, but was otherwise ineffective.
Against the clock, we waited three turns (6 minutes on random throws) using artillery to try and soften the Brits, but then in a vain 50/50 attempt we threw the cavalry brigade and Jaegers at the weaker central bridge, and surprisingly they won and forced a retreat.
We expanded the bridgehead, but instead of carrying on the assault my co-general tried to sneak through a gap in the line. Following this both flank bridges were taken, and the Brits fell back to their second line; but in the centre, 8 units could not move from the central woods onto the British back line because of artillery suppression.
In the end the score (after a recount) was Brits 28, Germans 24. A very narrow loss indeed, as the Brits had only 7 infantry stands, 1 hmg, six batteries out if nine and a heavy battery left!
The Germans suffered comparatively low losses, but just couldn't advance.

Great game, huge laugh, really tight and touch and go all the way through. Dice roll here or there for both sides and it would have changed the game completely!

Maurice again but this time, as the Duc d'Incebleundalle of the Principality of Hauteville, I was seen off by the Grossherzog von Vormbei (all bastardised north Merseyside place names). My right wing infantry attack fell foul of guard infantry whilst my left wing cavalry thrust hit an unreconnoitered marsh (a horrible card to have thrown at you at any point) losing 40% of its thrust. This time I was beaten by sunset. Again forgot to take my camera.

3) for my first ever three games, bizarrely, yes.
4) absolutely yes!

I even won a game!
Third game I took a maximum loss as one unit broke through four others, losing the general at the same time, knowing out nearly half my army in a turn! But learnt a huge amount, and really enjoyed it!

Last night played a game to mark the 75th anniversary of the battle of the River Plate

1) General Quarters I/II
2) Kriegsmarine v Royal Navy
3) Very comfortable with rules
4) No, played many times

Peter came up with an interesting "what if" scenario with Renown and Ark Royal being near enough to come to Harwoods assistance. To even things up Scharnhorst and Gneisenau had headed south after dealing with Rawalpindi. A small British convoy also blundered into the battle area.

In one corner the refight of River Plate was fought out with Graf Spee sunk by a combination of gun fire and torpedoes from Exeter and Achilles. Ajax was crippled and Exeter was not much better off. Achilles had escaped lightly.

In the other corner Renown supported by a Swordfish and a Skua strike from Ark Royal managed to cripple Scharnhorst while taking heavy damage. Gneisenau dodged the bombs of the one flight of Skuas that attacked her but was feeling lonely by the end of the game.

The convoy demonstrated why merchant ships should avoid enemy heavy ships. Both merchantmen were badly damaged by long range salvos from Scharnhorst and Gneisenau before their escorting cruiser and Renown's destroyers (after launching torpedo attacks on Scharnhorst) could get into position to lay smoke.

SYW game using a variant of Chas. Grant's reserve demolition scenario.

Field of Battle, 2nd. Edition
Prussians vs. Austrians
Yes
Yes

Prussians held off Austrians long enough to prepare bridge for demolition but things went very bad when Austrian reinforcements arrived on the field. Bridge was captured by the Austrians and then recaptured by the Prussians before Austrians could dismantle the charges. With many of their own units routing over the bridge with Austrian cavalry hard on their heels, the Prussians were forced to blow the bridge leaving too many Prussian units stranded on the wrong side of the river to claim victory #-o (shades of Lindenau bridge 50 years later!). As the Austrians also failed in their objective to capture and hold bridge, battle deemed a draw.  :-<

Although I also use Maurice and Black Powder for SYW, expect next game to be the above scenario using FoB again.

1/ Maurice
2/ Noble Franco-Bavarians versus cheatin' Austrians
3/ Yessss - I picked a bad army choice for my half of the army (French - went cavalry heavy, Maison d'Roi special and then arrived late. My partner had tried the attack to turn the flank and gotten mown down as setting up second had let the Austrians effectively have a secure flank and our only option was steady regular infantry... It did not go well. He hung on long enough to hand over to me, I failed to get any useful cards or rally off disorders and then collapsed.  Our spoiling attack on the other flank hit marsh and a succession of excellent cards for the Austrians who mowed it down with impunity and we fled the field havin done them a total of one out of twenty four morale points to twenty five totally lost... My only useful action was to buy a turn playing an unmapped marsh in front of the Austrian infantry which forced them into column and then to redeploy to the front. Which they just did, because Eugene is bloody good!).

4/ Yes - although the umpire has played a couple!

I know 3/ sounds like a lot of carping, but it was actually quite good. I just put a terrible army together and then couldn't get useful enough cards in quickly enough to salvage anything! Will be giving them a another few bashes, I think as it felt very horse & musket :)

Not all aspects no. Most of the rules are easy to follow, making for a fast moving game. However the command system where differing commands can either fail to move any units at all or can possibly allow the enemy up to 6 moves whilst you remain inactive seems extreme and is unrealistically frustrating.
Yes, first game although have played Hail Caesar and found the same problem there too.

1: Mars Attacks! = OK, so it's not a full-blown miniatures game, but it's got minis & true line of sight...
2: Mars vs. Earth. A bit predictable, granted...
3: Fine with the basic rules (which we were using), checking the rulebook every now & then for extra rules to add in.
4: Only played a few FtF games, plus a few solo.

I have the Kickstart game, but with very few extras over the quite extravagant 'free' Stretch Goals. I'm still playing the first scenario, but boosting forces using the points values. Now assembling the Giant Robot...

A very very simple system, on a pretty small 2'x2' map with only 8x8 squares, but a load of scenery and placement of minis anywhere on a square stops it feeling like a chessboard. Glad I got extra scenery though, the set that came with the base game is a bit sparse. Once you add in  about 50% more walls, it starts to feel simultaneously too cramped and too open, which feels good for an urban skirmish!

Perhaps I should have said, frustrating in games terms. However, as all the other players really seemed to like the rules, with even talk of a campaign, I shall no doubt be playing them again. But to sit and watch unable to re-act due to bad dice throwing (for which I am infamous) whilst the enemy seem to dance around you onto your flank and then charge you....!!!!

Square Bashing the Russo-Polish War. The Russians finally broke through the trenches around Warsaw but ran out of daylight with too many Poles left standing. Consequently the victory points went mostly to the Poles. I like these rules because they set a game in a context, they have a straightforward turn sequence and game mechanics, and you never know whether that barrage or air attack will happen, and when exactly night will fall and ruin your efforts.

Last Thursday at the club it was SYW using Black Powder. The game went well, but I had to get used again to the unusual close combat system. which I find a bit counter-intuitive, i.e. work out who won not for the purpose of casualty removal but for the throwing of morale dice. This can have sudden and dramatic effects if you roll low with negative factors. However, it does produce a realistic and positive result to a game over two or three hours.

Finally got to try out the Sword and Spear rules last night.
We used my 6mm Hoplites and Early Persians.
The rules went down very well with my gaming friends, so much so that we are going to play again next week, so that's 4 new players of the rules.
This was our first game, so the first two turns went quite slowly but then we got quicker as we got used to them. Trying to figure out how best to allocate your 'action dice' is a really good aspect of these rules.
Overall, a really promising ancients game system.

Puritan: that's because BP doesn't have casualties, which I think is a good thing. Too many rules refer to kills etc, so you have impossibly small units surviving on the battlefield. At Waterloo the Inniskillings took 33% casualties, which was noteworthy high. On the table a unit a third down are just warming up in most rules!

Agree entirely. 30% casualties were reckoned fierce even in the Great War of 1914-18. The problem is, if you water the rate of attrition down to authentic levels nothing much happens and your game stretches out to days. That's why our group prefers rules where no casualties are removed and attrition is just a declining series of numbers (and the figures are easier to pack away at the end).

Durr - I know all that . What I meant was just because you cause most kills, or whatever else you want to call it, doesn't necessarily mean you've won the melee/close combat/ getting quite near the enemy. Happens especially with cavalry who appear to have won by causing most casualties but frequently end up bouncing off after combat results have been carried out. I actually like the system because it pays players who mass their troops for support rather than spreading them all over the place. I'm also a fan of systems which don't remove casualties - BP, Principles of War, Field of Battle, Impetus, Poleaxed etc.

4 player game- Byzantines (Me) allied with Normans vs Moors (Sujester) with Italian allies (Orcs).

2nd try, last tried it before Christmas, Seemed easy to pick up, and got a lot done in 2 hours

Orcs lost his General in an honour challenge from the Normans, Sunjester's went down to me driving off his skirmish riders then throwing 2 units of Cavalry, including my General, repeatedly at his General.

Do you play in 28mm as Warlord "Suggest", or one of Gods own scales? I've found in 28 it looks and feels daft but using 6/10/15 or even 20mm figures it gives a very decent game!

Not-a-puritan:

We were playing with 28mm - 12 foot or 6 cavalry to the unit, but there is no reason you can't play with 5-6 10mm on a 20-25mm base.  You could use Warmaster bases, 1=2, and use a kill marker for one hit on a base.

Declare what you are going to do, and see if you make the command roll - differs between units, and depending on what you want them to do (move/charge/fire)

Combat is 12 dice, until you get down to half a unit. To Hit number depends on unit type and whether attacking or defending, so some units it is better to charge, others better to receive a charge.  Divide number of hits by enemy armour value, that is the number of kills.  Morale roll is 2d6-total men lost.  If under Courage, start running, if under 1 then routs and is removed.

Lots of special rules to make each generic unit kind different

Bolt Action

US v German late war

Use BA regularly for quick pick up and play solo games

No play it regularly mainly solo due to the activation dice

Yanks got well and truly walloped trying to envelop a smaller but veteran Kampfgruppe. The Germans only lost a single sniper and two individual mortar and MG42 crewmen both of whom were lost during the pre-game bombardment.

A FUBAR'd US artillery barrage wrecked the US advance, killing the US CO, immobilising the Sherman supporting the infantry and decimating its infantry support to the point where the squad routed. The US didn't get over the midline.....

That sounds like my FAC in the last couple of games!

First call in, good. Second call in, disastrous.

Replaced him with an M8 Greyhound last game and it was definitely MVP :D

1. Star Wars X-Wing
2. Imperial vs Rebels
3.  Yes.
4. No

Six Imperial TIE fighters (of various types) engaged two x-wings and two y-wings in a battle on the edge of an asteroid field.  The Imperial ships were outmanoeuvred and shot down.  They manage to bring down an X-Wing,  and damage a y-wing enough to get it to crash into an asteroid.  Good fun game all round!

1. Blucher
2. Austrians V French 300pts
3. My 'go to' Naps set at the moment. the Scharnhorst Campaign system is inspired

The Austrians took the field having seized the initiative right from the off where 4/5ths of the Army got in an early reserve move due to some outstandingly high dice rolling. The French were pinned in their deployment area with little room to manouvre and the Austrians piled in on a weak flank whilst holding the centre.

If you havent tried Blucher, you REALLY must :)

1.Wargaming the European C19th
2.French v. Prussians (Mars la Tour)
3.Very straightforward set of rules. I would not use the word simple as they created all sorts of tactical problems for both sides.
4.Not the first time as they have been used for Carlists, Austro-Prussian and Crimea before now.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?

Blucher

2) What armies were confronted?

French vs British & Spanish alliance (4 players, 2 per side)

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?

Sort of

4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

Yes

The British/Spanish took up a defensive line on a string of hills across the board, with the British cavalry in the valleys.

The Spanish formed up in the open ground on the west flank, behind their cannons.

The French deployed in mirror style, and began the attack by advancing towards the high ground.

The British cavalry commander IMMEDIATELY ignored his orders (never put me in charge of the cavalry) and charged off into the heart of the advancing French, putting a couple of infantry formations to flight!

The French cavalry counter charged, and the British engaged in a fighting retreat back to the relative safety of their infantry lines.

The French attacks up the hills were soundly repulsed and by the time we abandoned play due to time running out, everyone agreed the British had won.

Interesting game with some quirky mechanics.  Basically, if you advance into range of the enemy muskets you are at a disadvantage immediately, as the enemy will shoot first.  No real incentive therefore to attack, rather better to wait for the enemy to do so.  Its my first game, but the chaps have played a couple of times and their observations on this are similar.  It seems that attacking is a poor option!

Sounds like the game was accurate for temperament, or at least for the British cavalry. Although you reformed and came back instead of charging to glory AND death so maybe not ;)

Sounds like the French would have had a tough time of it against British on the ridgelines of hills.

Its quite unusual for Cavalry to rout infantry easily - was this in a single engagement or over multiple turns?

I tend to move to just outside volley/skirmish range and try to tempt the enemy forward. If they don't, I'm happy to play a waiting game while I bring numbers to bear elsewhere. In this case I'd have been tempted to go for the Spanish and look to hold the British on their ridgeline.

The key to Blucher is having a reserve and deploying it where it can exploit a position that has been worn down. Reserve moves are pretty spectacular and can bring a force into the fray very quickly.

no adverse feedback and they all seemed to enjoy it.
4. No

1. Ronin

2. Monk and Ikki Ikki alliance v. Korean

3. Very comfortable with these rules as I have played many times now

5. The later questions have disappeared, but the game moved along smoothly with three players. The Monks had some appalling dice throws as they tried to get into the Korean castle, but the Ikki Ikki put paid to enough to cause morale failure on their part and a win for the Japanese.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game?

Liberty - our own Wild west rules

2) What armies were confronted?

Watt Didd and his Delaware Indian gang
Salma 'Slim' Hayek and her South of the border gang
The James May gang

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?

Reckon so

4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset?

We certainly ain't greenhorns

The scenario was that the three gangs had to go on a pub crawl of Liberty's 4 bars and the brothel.

The first gang to complete the crawl won

Needless to say there was a lot of beer and blood split with Delaware's Watt Didd claiming victory on his own as the rest of his gang were dead drunk dead
