They are really, really nice 8).
F-A-B love em!! Got a question for you though - what do you use for the grass and foliage effects on your bases?- I beleave itll take a bit of time to do but it looks "zehr Gut" and probably worth the effort - ;D

These are superb!! Could you let us know what size bases you are using for infantry, skirmishers, cavalry and artillery? Any rule set in mind? I'm now well and truly distracted from my current project. Looks like it's AWI for me this weekend!!
Andy
HI Andy,
Basing is as follows, I copied Dab and seems ok.
Infantry : 20 x 20 (based in 4's)
Cavalry : 25 x 25 (based in 2's)
Skirmishers : 20 x 20 (based in 2's)
Artillery : 30 x 30 / 40 x 40 ( 3pdr / 6 pdr)
Command Units will be : 20mm Circular / 30mm Circular - not 100% sure yet....
Gonna use Black Powder &/or British Grenadier Rules

Many thanks Dazza!

To paraphrase
The Patriot "Ban him! Ban that man!".
Only joking; I would never quote from that film.... the point still stands though; ban.
Of course not, seriously though, I have had to rework some of the 18th Century horses as they lean to one side, so I am working out how to do the generals and American dragoons efficiently with the use of dollies. I want the generals packs to have a few different figures in them; including dismounted figures, messengers, scouts etc, rather than one or two generic officers. That means having a couple of dolly riders done up, which takes a bit of time. I am working on bits and pieces of about six separate ranges for Pendraken so there's lots to do.

Those are awesome :o paint jobs on the minis!!! And having Clib doing such a masterful job on sculpting those minis is awesome 8)
Cannot wait til the AWI is completely finished - man - will Clib ever have time to sleep or eat with all of our demands for his sculpting talent for 10s :P
And I know you all know this but I just have to keep saying it - these are 10MM MINIS and LOOK at the sculpting and the painting of them !!! Just as if not better than some 15s or 25/28s that I have seen!!!
Keep up the great work Dazza!
I only want 1 thing before Xmas from Clib, and everyone related to AWI on this forum knows exactly what it is .............................. Mounted Generals
The remainder of the list is soooo long, but Tarletons would be nice and a few Legion types.

Superb. Really inspirational. As a previousley commited 15mm gamer, these show the quality you can get with 10mm at a third of the price. In fact these are better than ANY 15mm for the AWI out there at the moment. They beat some 28mm too.
Beautifuly painted,
but they show major drawback of Pendraken's AWI - lack of standing continentals command.
I am SO not going to keep up with this thread, I'm green with envy already.
Superb, truly superb!

What are those fellas in the middle then - the ones with the hat in the air, the drum & the flags? Are they not command? And they're certainly not kneeling or prone...
Must admit I thought the range was pretty fine with the figues available.
The American forces are fairly easy to mix and match for units.
AWA8 is fine to mix in with standing troops. Well is in my force.
I'd rather see units such as French command first.
That painting is just depressing, such great work.
Now to go and grump at mine ;)
Oh - I see...it's the fact that they're marching...or, because these are very small inanimate objects, they could be standing - with one leg planted in front of the other.
Top right - standing officer (with spontoon)
and to be fair to Clib, this is an area he has already said will dealt with before xmas.
:D :D :D
O.K. guys,
I can use standing militia command and wait patiently.
I am thinking these are based on 20mm square bases? Look good to me. Would you fit 2 figures into a 15mm frontage? Net wondering so as to maximize your playing area.
These are based 2x2 on 20mm bases, I like the effect, 15mm would probably work , but I like the 20mm look, seems to look ok whilst not looking to open or too close. Its all down to personal taste tbh, try it on a 15x15 and see what u think , if not change it :)

Some pics of the current batch, they haven't photographed well as the heavy snow here isn't allowing great lighting conditions. They'll be heading off to Pendraken HQ tomorrow all things being well. I started out much the same a few months ago. I bought just a few AWI codes; liked them, so I bought a few more. Liked those so I bought a bunch more. Now with these new codes I'll be buying even more. Now I just need time to paint them all.
Tom
It's great :o
It's you "Goldfinger" ?
Great sculpting Clib, can't wait to have a go at painting them up once they are cast. I will be painting up more sample figures after Christmas, the aim is to have all the packs completed as soon as possible to make way for some Napoleonic samples.
At present I am busy doing another two units for Dazza, I will post images as soon as they are complete.
I have not forgotten the painting guide, but with Christmas fast approaching I busy finishing off work for other people.
Dazza, the figures look great on the table.
It's nice to see how units look on mass. The most I have had here at any one time is four units, just before I pack them ready for shipment.
I really must think about painting an army for myself :D.
Andy

You painted partizane and flag staves black. 8) Most people make it simply brown, which is wrong.
BTW what did you find about the staves color ?
Generally, AFAIK in musketeer regiments they should be black, an in fuzileers - white.
@ Maciek
Information : Here (http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Mansbach_Infantry)
Colours : To the present day, a definitive reconstruction of the Hesse-Cassel colours during the Seven Years' War is non-existent. All existing publications are mostly speculative. The Leib (colonel) colour was probably white and the regimental colour assumed dark blue. Here follows a tentative reconstruction of these flags used till 1767. The flag poles were black.
Officers : Officers wore a white stock and, as a sign of their commissioned rank, a gorget, in button colour, and sash. The sash was of silver silk shot with red flecks.
NCO's carried the Prussian style partizan. The standard staff was black.

@ Dazza
Thanks, I also use the data from kronoskaf site to determine uniforms of my Hessians.
When talking about colours, I'm afraid, that according to this:
http://vial.jean.free.fr/new_npi/revues_npi/9_1999/npi0999/9_hessk_drap1.htm
and this:
http://www.dupagemilitaryflag.com/files/33395736.pdf
your flags are wrong.
As sources give contradictory data about color of field and corners, the existing evidence shows that the Hessian lion, while marching toward the staff, should always look backward.
@Nicofig
I'm studying Andy Mac painting guide, and maybe, some day I'll be able to paint like him.
@Leon
I'm sorry, but I can find better priced Vallejo paints here, in Poland :)
MacieK -i also used the dupage.com resource - it looks very well researched.
I'm not sure i managed anything more than an impressionistic rendering of the lion though when i painted it!
Wow ! You painted it !
I would never dare to paint 10mm flags.
New Years resolution. I have to do something about building a white box. The figures look a lot better in the hand than they do in the photos, just ask Dazza :).
Regarding the flags there are several manufactures producing the Hesian flags with the Lion facing towards the flag staff and a few with it looking over it's shoulder. There are no surving examples and very few illustrations so any flag will be speculative.
maciek, many thanks for the links the second one was new to me.

We've just got a new one for the website photo's from here: http://www.stevesphotoshop.co.uk/ (http://www.stevesphotoshop.co.uk/), I think it was about £30 with postage.
Cheers Leon,
They take paypal so as soon as I have some figure money in the kitty I'll get one. I have 2 small spot lamps, so will try to get the bulbs they mention as well.
Many thanks

your flags are wrong.
Well tbh the figures look great and its all based on ifs and buts, but in my campaign I expect New England to remain under the Crown, pesky yanks :p
I've even seen AWI Guards units with flags, and everyone says they were left behind in England, so as long as the unit is distinguishable, its only a minor isssue, perhaps the lion wanted to see where he was going, wasn't bothered who was behind him :) (the top3 totty page was in front - not behind :) )
Quote from: Dazza on 31 January 2011, 06:54:40 PM
I've even seen AWI Guards units with flags
I've read on TMP forum, that two flags were taken to America, so my Guards will proudly carry theirs ;)
But, never mind the flags. Most important is to have fun with painting and gaming.
one of the great things about the AWI is that so many of the details are very sketchy so you can put your own interpretation on many of the units and no one can tell you that you're wrong. I originally chose to do my guards without flags but they do look a bit lonely without them - so when we get the proper figures i think i will redo them with colours.
@Goatmajor
From TMP:
There is a tradition (but it is only tradition) that the major's colour and a company colour of the 3rd (Scots) Foot Guards were taken along.
You can find all British flags here: http://www.fifedrum.org/crfd/BD_1R.htm

love the painting, and it left me with a question
what colors did you use on the guns :-\
hope there wil be more :-bd

Harold
Harold,
I'll get the info on the guns, it should appear here soon.... ;)
Hi Harold,
Dazza passed on your question, I used Foundry Storm Blue (39), all 3 shades for the artillery. There are a lot of suggestions for the colour of the artillery equipment, from light grey to deep grey, medium blue to dark blue and even red. It was during the Napoleonic Wars that the colour started to be standardised as light grey. I went for the Storm Blue, somewhere in between.
Hope this helps.
Thanks guys
i,m waiting on my guns to arrive, then ill give it a go ;)

Any chance on a "How to do it like Dazza" sometime mate your samples on your website are the reason poor Baccus is now a victim of Pendraken's and your skill... ;D ;D
Always looking for ways to improve my own talent and would love to know ho you do it mate :'( :'(
Question: There must be some story behind the arrangement of ethnicity in the unit?
Answer: After researching the unit I found that although the 1st Rhode Island Regiment was a mixed race unit it kept the two ethnic groups in separate companies. Roughly a 70 - 30 split, so I came up with 2 coloured bases and three white bases and added a coloured drummer to the command base.
Hope this helps.

Yep, they're the SYW 'generic' crew which come with every SYW gun (they come with a couple of nation specific chaps as well).
AMAZING Really a GREAT JOB ;)
CONGRATULATIONS
Thanks for that info Leon and Dazza, I really ought to look more closely at my unopened packs before asking questions :-[
Great looking paint jobs Dazza. Are you black priming? I still dont know how you can get such crisp looking color/detail on them :o But keep up the great work.
Excellent work. I note that you have got the right coat colour for the French infantry [Bourbonais]: pearl rather than white. This also helps the belts and other details stand out.

Andy,

AndyMac, I am curious what sort of brush you are using for your highlights? I haven't been able to find a good brush for highlighting 10mm. I finally took a brush and cut off the top half or so to give a flat and wider surface. Not hundred percent happy with the solution but better than nothing.
Hi Jagger,
My brush for adding the final highlights is a pure sable 05 and a steady hand :D Hope this helps.
Andy
Thanks Andy!
Is the sable O5 a fan brush? I like a fan brush for highlighting larger figures but just haven't found one that is small enough to work properly with 10mm.
Hi Jagger,
The 5/0 has a very fine pointed tip. Not sure where you are from but if you are in the UK go into the WORKS and have a look at their artists brushes. They do several sets of three brushes, one of which has white nylon bristles with flat heads, the number 4 would be perfect for your 28mms. They also do a set of fine artist brushes, the 3/0 cut flat would be a cheap and workable brush for your needs. Both sets are about £1.99 each.
Andy
I usually get my brushes from Hobby Lobby here in the US. I will check to see if they have those brushes the next time I get to a Hobby Lobby. Thanks again!
Hi there,

With some trepidation, I offer a suggestion (the only one I could possibly think of) that might improve on the already well-nigh perfect. I notice the flags have vertical waves in them, but basically fly directly out horizontally from the pole. In anything other than a very high wind, I think this is extremely unlikely. There will always be a degree of "droop" the further away the material gets from the support of the pole. I try and achieve this by folding in such a way as to get triangles, rather than rectangles, between folds. I try an angle of about 45 degrees to the vertical to either the left or right (entirely a matter of personal preference, but may depend on whether there is a side of the flag of which you are particularly proud) and then again in the opposite direction. Two folds is usually enough, and when teased out on the staff they hang lower at the extremity than at the staff. I think the whole looks more convincing while still exhibiting the detail of the flag. Anyone else any views, or willing to share their own techniques?

Brilliant work Dazza! Who get's the credit for these?
Well done to Andy then 8).
Dazza,
very nice job. I love your figures but also your bases.
Can you explain to me how you realize your bases? What sort of color paint references and what sort of grass.
BH62
Hi there BH62,
The figures I have painted for Dazza have been based using the following method.
Once the figures have been stuck onto the base I apply several layers fine sand using HI-Tack (very sticky) Glue. Because of the thinness of the figure base you normally only have to do this twice.
Once the sand has dried (this happens very quickly using the glue mentioned) I then paint the base using Sepia Calligraphy Ink. This gives depth to the sand, I then dry brush twice using Matt emulsion tester pots. The first is with Milky Coffee the second with Chocolate Dream.
Once dry I apply several dabs of glue to each base before shaking over a home mixed flock knocking of any excess. After that I apply a few extra details using mininaturur summer tufts 717-22 and two different shades of terrain foam.
I hope that is of some help to you.

Very good job.
The militia look suitably rough and ready. :)
Brilliant figures and how lucky to have found such a good painter. Have been sitting on about 800 of these lovely figures over the last few years-never had time to paint them.
Decided to go onto the dark side and have them painted for me. Will be thrilled if they look like yours.
Loved the battle shots. Was thinking of basing them in 6's, but having seen yours based in 4's, I might have to reconsider.
Best wishes DaveL

Beautifully painted - but, for me, those tufts are too tall - and therefore detract from the beauty of the figures...

Very nice.
I have now realised that I put my wagons together backwards :'( :-[
The clue to this may have been my 6 year old daughter suggesting that everything would slide out the back of them. But I didn't listen to her. And now I have seen these...
Nice work lad(s)! 8)
Nice but I too find the tufts too tall and somewhat distracting if I'm honest.
Superb. Even the cattle. Not too sure about the standard-bearer amongst the skirmishers, though. To quote Jim Davidson, "too risky!" :-\
Absolutely superb :-bd but I do tend to share Nik's and Steve J's views on the tufts

They are superb. Thats the problem!! Sadly, I will have to settle for your reflected joy. My Royalist ECW are finally based, Parliament "just" need grass. Then its on to 3 medievals:l WOTR, HYW and Barons War2); Then napoleonic non kickstarter Brits/Portugese/Spanish followed by the French. The Prussian/Russian/Austrian mountain will have to sit for a while as I NEED to get back to 1/72 where my Ancient Germans, Brits and Picts want some Romans to beat up. Then I can return for the other nap nations and then its back to BCW for Covenanters/Montrose who are already morphing towards joint duty as Jacobites which means I will need Williamites. .... :'( :'( :'( :'(

I actually got a few packs of AWI recently to use for some skirmish gaming to try and avoid going in too deep on big battalion. Hopefully that they'll be enough to scratch the itch... :-X We'll see how that goes, they haven't hit the painting sticks yet as I have a similarly long list of in-progress projects as you!
