2012 is our 20th birthday, and we're having a party!
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6729138401_b6dd622b21.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pendraken/6729138401/)
20 years is quite a milestone, so we want to thank all of you guys for supporting us all these years!
When? - Saturday 14th July!
The event will start at 10am, running through until 4pm-ish.
Where? - Marton Hotel and Country Club, Middlesbrough
The Marton Hotel is situated on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, with a major dual carriageway right next to it, so is easily accessible from any direction. Accommodation/food/alcohol is available, see further down for more details.
For more info on the hotel, check their website here: http://www.martonhotel.co.uk/ (http://www.martonhotel.co.uk/)
The postcode for SatNav / Google Maps is: TS7 8DS
We'll provide full directions closer to the event.
What's Happening? - All sorts!
- There will be 10 Display/Participation games, showing a variety of 10mm goodness! We've already had several offers for games, but if you'd be interested in putting something on, just let us know!
- The Pendraken trade stand will be there, with several one-off special deals, and hopefully some brand new never-seen-before releases!
- We're hoping to have both Painting and Sculpting Demo's, with some very well known names!
- Loads more to be announced closer to the date!
Cost? - Only £1!
Tickets can be purchased in advance, simply by dropping us an email to let us know you want to come! We'll pop you a PayPal invoice through, and that's it! You can also pay on the door if you like, but the advance option allows us to monitor how many are coming so that we can notify the venue. We'll be looking at putting something on the website for people to buy tickets through there as well.
Everyone who comes will receive a little goodie bag, including a special one-off figure, purely designed for this occasion. We'll reveal more details on this over the coming months!
Facilities - Food/Alcohol!
The venue has a full bar inside, so there'll be no problem getting a drink throughout the day. Tea/Coffee will be provided for the first couple of hours until the bar opens at midday. There will also be a full bar menu available, with prices roughly around £5 a meal. As we get closer to the date, we'll finalise the menu and pricing with the venue, dependant on the numbers attending. Unfortunately, you cannot bring your own refreshments into the venue though.
There is also a second pub right over the road for anyone staying over, and a parade of shops around 200 yards up the road, with everything you might need.
Accommodation - Yes!
The hotel has a good number of rooms available, in Single/Double/Twin options. Prices are:
Single - £50
Double/Twin - £60
These prices include VAT and a full English breakfast. To book a room, simply call the hotel on 01642 317141, and tell them you're with the Pendraken party on Sat July 14th!
There are also other accommodation options in the nearby area, including a Premier Inn about a mile and a half down the road. If you've got any problems finding somewhere, let us know and we'll get you sorted out.
Anything for the missus? - Loads!
There are loads of options if you need to keep the rest of the family busy. A couple of miles down the road will take them straight into Middlesbrough town centre, where there are some great shopping facilities. For something a bit quieter, a couple of miles in the opposite direction takes you straight into the North York Moors, with some lovely little villages dotted about. With the event being in July, hopefully we'll have some great weather on the day!
Phew, that's loads of stuff, is there anything else? - Yes!
As well as the event on the day, we're hoping to have a little get-together for anyone staying over. There's an Indian right up the road from the venue, so once we've got a better idea on numbers, we'll get something booked. This will be on the Friday night before the event.
Right then, I'm in, what do I need to do now?
1. Drop us an email, and let us know you want to come!
2. If you're going to stay over, get in touch with the hotel and book your room!
3. If you'd like to put a game on, pop us an email!
4. Turn up on the day and have an awesome time!
If there's anyone's got any questions at all, just let us know!
:-bd <:-P :O) :-bd

Would you be driving? It's quite a trek from London, you'd be better off flying Paris to Newcastle, and then we'd organise someone to pick you up.

Bovvy's the weekend before (7th & 8th), we made sure to work around the other shows so there wouldn't be a clash.

Very patiently, it's a long way north and there are rumours that once you get past Hatfield the tarmac runs out :o
More seriously, Leon would you be interested in a WW1 participation game if I can swing the weekend?

Rubbish, it goes at least to Hitchin. :D
It is only a rumour the tarmac runs out at Hatfield, it actually stops at the Carlisle/Berwick-on-Tween line. ;)
Yes, but after Hatfield it's only a donkey-load wide. :D

Well that sounds like a great party and I wish I could be there.
If anyone on New Zealand would like to help celebrate Pendraken's 20th birthday they let me know and come and join our party
We (3 of us at this stage) will be playing at least 2 game that day.

It'd be better to let us know if you're definitely coming, just so we have a good idea of the numbers, but it's not a problem if you can't. I'm expecting a lot of folk will just turn up on the day.

Hi All,

Who knows if leon asks nicely I may even bring along some russians mostly Pendraken. just got another 4 Corps worth of Infantry to do as saddly I only have 4 corps at the moment.

While it's a great idea it is about a 5 hour drive excluding stops in mid-summer a day after I get back from a foreign business trip - so I don't think it's viable unfortunately.

That's a shame, but it is a fair old drive! We'll have a computer set up in the venue for any Forum members who can't make it along to still 'take part' in some way.
Sadly we're on holiday that week, and I can't see the Management allowing me to detour via Middlesborough. If I can get to a computer I may put in an "appearance". Have a great time. <:-P
Ok Leon I can confirm attendance with one Austrian and one Prussian SYW army plus 6x4 cloth and terrain. You just supply the table. Will play to Black Powder. Cheers for now.

Any local guys going??? I live in Saltburn and maybe we could car share. Assuming I'm not working
Couple of questions before I book my room.
1) How many are staying at the venue and how many elsewhere. Don't want to be the only one there if everyone else is at the Premier Inn!
2) Has the meal been sorted yet? I'm thinking of driving up from my Dad's in Leeds on Saturday morning for the day and staying that night, but if the meal's the friday I'd rather go up for that.

There's quite a few I know of who have booked into the venue, so you definitely won't be on your own. The meal is looking like Friday night at the moment, as more people will be staying over the night before, and heading home after the event.
Give me a shout if I can help with anything.

:^o ;)
Considering that I live just up the road, it would be rude not to be there. Count me in, though I'll pay on the door.
It's not long now until our 20th Birthday celebration, so it's time to start announcing some of the games and things we've got planned!
So, without further ado, the games:
- The Border Reiver club will be heading along with a brand new SCW game made purely for this event, as the 'Fight for Madrid' unfolds!
- Brompton Bankers will be displaying their fantastic Ratshire game, which was last seen at Smoggycon in 2010. This is one of the best Fantasy games we've seen, and every time you look at it, you find something new!
- Goat Major and GavinP are heading up to put on what has been tantatively titled an 'AWI Thingy!'. This one will be a participation game as well, so we'll be making sure Dave gets a game in!
- Hoka Hey Wargaming, and Pendraken's own 'adr' will be testing some gamers with his Rorke's Drift participation game. Grab a seat and see if you can survive!
- Burnley Wargames Club, in the guise of the Forum's own PeterRushton and sultanbev, will be doing the Battle of Jarama, 1937, in another piece of SCW action!
- Section 8 Games club will be making the short trip down the A19, and taking us back to Morocco 1908, as the French try to relieve Fortress Soixante Neuf!
- Forum member Rubicon will be coming along with his WWII Pacific participation game, as the USMC attempt to seize a couple of bridges from the Japanese! This one will have a prize awarded to the best players over the course of the day!
As well as the games, we've got loads of other things going on:
- Forum member Bernie, along with Realtime Wargamers, will be coming along with a host of their Pendraken armies. They'll be discussing the pro's and con's of various rules mechanisms and scales, and also the benefits of 10mm!
- We're thrilled to be able to announce that AndyMac will be coming along for the day, and showing off his fantastic painting skills. If you've ever marvelled at the pictures of his work, then make sure you pop along and pick up some tips!
We will also be raffling off the rather shiny Roman helmet seen at so many of the shows through last year. There will be a goodie bag for everyone who comes along, and inside will be a raffle number. Sometime in the afternoon, Dave will pick out the lucky winner!
And last but certainly not least, we'll be meeting the inimitable Mr Nik Harwood for the very first time! Nik has agreed to put on a game, wave his pointy stick about, or simply just discuss the finer points of Top Totty. He'll also be signing autographs in return for single malt... :D
That's all for now, but keep an eye out for more announcements!
:-bd
Sounds like a fun time. Too bad I'm on the other side of the pond.
I'd especially be interested in what Bernie and the Realtime Wargamers have to say.
Cant wait :D
i'm in for curry or 2 :)
Can I get away with an overnight pass to go autograph hunting for the lesser spotted, malt quaffing, tank-bane... :o

Just rang the hotel to book a room and had a bit of a surreal experience. Woman I spoke to knew nothing of Pendraken, nothing of the show, and wanted to know if I was attending the dinner dance. That's quite odd?! The booking's definitely there, I was in the hotel the other day getting some measurements for the floorplan? It was definitely the Marton Hotel and Country Club you rang? We're booked into what they call the 'Sunroom', or 'Sunlounge' or something like that. Let me know on that, and I'll give them a bell if there's a problem.

Oh - and we have this tradition of over-ordering, being hugely optimistic on the amount & heat (spice) of the food that we would like to eat.
Usually fuelled by the over-ordering of alcohol previously, during, and after the afore-mentioned curry :D

I'm also a fan of the single malt so p'raps they'd better get buying some stock in
I'll let them know!
I have to agreed with Shecky, round trip to there from here is roughly $1099 - $2400 depending upon which air carrier you get on.
Now what was that talk about for a single malt, Nik will have his Top Tottys wave your pointy stick around ? :P
Might be worth the bucks for the airflight over :d :d

It would be a shame to drink it at home on my own, better to share a wee drop amongst friends.

I am wanting to put together games for which I don't need 30 foot but maybe 10 max and in some cases less. Will this be ok?

Nothing planned at the moment I'm afraid. :( The website isn't built for allowing discounts, so to reduce the prices on there would mean manually changing them all. We can run a script to do the main prices, but it's still a good 5-6 hours of work to do the others.
As much as it's a bit poo for the overseas folk, if we had the discount and put the special figures straight on the website, then it might dissuade some people from bothering to come to the event. There needs to be some incentives for people to come along.
That being said, I'll have a think and see what we can do.
Quote from: DancingPotPlant on 20 June 2012, 01:38:10 PM
Out of curiousity, will there be opportunities to purchase single figures?
I am wanting to put together games for which I don't need 30 foot but maybe 10 max and in some cases less. Will this be ok?
We can provide smaller quantities, no bother at all, but you'd need to place a pre-order, as we wouldn't have them with us on the day.
8)
More game details added to the Border Reiver's SCW game, and Rubicon's Pacific game!
That's all the games finalised now, so we've got 3 participation games to keep people occupied throughout the day, and 5 display games of pure 10mm awesomeness! There are still a few more things to be announced yet, so keep an eye open for those!
8)
Leon,
I'll probably bring my WW2 stuff along incase the AWI game finishes quickly and we want a different game.
Nice one Gavin - I was hoping to get some BKC gaming - is that what you do in WW2?
It is indeed BKC that I play. As I say though, it's a backup rather than the main event. I don't have an idea how many people are going to turn up and play, how long it'll take and at the moment whether I'll get all the units I need to get painted done in time!

looks like a nice selection of events, most regular cons only wish they could be so lucky. :)

I'm a bit surprised there's not more participation games.
Goat Major and I had a playtest today to get familiar with the rules which went rather well although I had to field a number of card proxy bases for units still to be painted. Think we both got the gist of the rules and I know I'm now very revved up and ready to go for the weekend.

There's still space for one or two more, I'll throw out some feelers and see if anyone else wants to bring something along. Getting close now though, only 3 weeks to go!

Just found an un opened bottle of Glenmorangie, i'll make sure I drop it (carefully) into my bag and bring it with me :D
It would be a shame to drink it at home on my own, better to share a wee drop amongst friends.
Andy
During a recent games room tidy up I unearthed a couple of bottles I was given as a gift - 10 yr old Aberlour and a 15 yr old Dalwhinnie, both Highland Malts - (my favourites are Islay Malts; Laphroaig, Bowmore that kind of thing). I'll pack them in case the whisky bunch decide to have a bit of a session.....
I suspect I'm going to need to pack some paracetamol at this rate!
If anyone would like anything specific bringing along to the Bash, please make sure to let us know before Sunday 8th, to give us time to get it cast up for you!
8)
In other news, unfortunately Forum member Bernie is unable to make it along to the event, as he's moving house on the same day! So we won't have the Realtime Wargamers display at the show.
This does mean that we may be able to fit another game in though, so let me know if you'd be interested in doing something!
8)
And the curry is now sorted! There's around 15 of us going to be there, and I've got us booked in at 8pm, which should hopefully be late enough for anyone travelling up. Let me know if you won't be there in time, and I can tweak the timings.
Here's the menu as well, so that you can browse it, decide on something, and then completely change your mind when you get there... or is that just me?!
http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/jolsha.pdf (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/jolsha.pdf)
The restaurant is called Jolsha, post code TS7 8DU. It's literally a 5-minute walk from the Bash venue, so we can meet at the hotel and have a walk up if everyone's feeling up to it! If not, transport can be provided!

Is anyone still going to be around on Saturday night as well ?
I've booked my hotel room this evening - not long to go now...!! Looking forward to putting faces to fellow forum members, hosting a game, eating curry and enjoying a few whiskies..
My game is good to go apart from a few bases of palm trees which are sitting on my painting desk in my new (smaller :( ) games room - the youngest has just made the transition from cot to bed and that, along with all of his favourite toys/activities, needed increased floor space. Still, less room for clutter, so maybe it's for the best...
Anyway,
Game Details:
"A Bridge (or two) too far!?"

Oh - and we have this tradition of over-ordering, being hugely optimistic on the amount & heat (spice) of the food that we would like to eat.
Usually fuelled by the over-ordering of alcohol previously, during, and after the afore-mentioned curry :D
;D ;D
I know my limits - at least as far as curry is concerned....
Hi Rubicon

If anyone wants to come visit Pendraken HQ on the Sunday, we'll be throwing the doors open to anyone who wants to come down.

I was bored...please read in Ollivier or Brannagh type voice
This day is called the Birthday Bash
He that outlives this day and comes safe home
Will stand a-tiptoe when this day is named
And rouse him at the name of Pendraken.
He that shall see this day and live t' old age
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours
And say, "Tomorrow is Pendraken's Birthday."
Then will he open his figures box and show his broken spears
And say, "These wounds I had on that day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with his dice rolls
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words â€"
Techno, Clib and Nic
Nosher and Lemmy, Goat Major and Leon â€"
Be in their flowing cups freshly remembered.
This story shall the good man teach his son,
And Pendraken's Birthday shall ne'er go by
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered,
We few, we happy few, we 10mm gamers.
For he today that shared his curry with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition.
And gentlemen in Gaming Clubs now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That gamed with us upon Pendrakens 21st Birthday
Superb! How long did that take?
That Shakespeare quote engine had it's effect.
just wish i could be there to cheer it aloud whence it is oratored to the crowds!

Umm it took about 5 minutes to be honest...though I have to say that most of the words arent mine , there by some 'writer' of little fame
And yes the Shakespeare quote engine gave me inspiration
Please, please please...
Anyone who will be there, take this with you, hand it round, make Leon or Dave or Nk or someone Perform it, video it and get it on youtube! This has to be embedded in this site as brilliantly brilliant!
Even with my name in it, this is superb!

We're getting close to the big day now, so here's some handy directions for getting to the venue!
The Marton Hotel is situated just off the side of the A174 to the south of Middlesbrough. The Hotel is quite prominent, and is easily visible as you come off the sliproads.
So, if you are:-
Coming from the North: Get yourself onto the A19 southbound, which will take you past Middlesbrough. When you see the A174 (signposted 'Redcar' and 'Teesport') move into the left lane, and keep to the left as you take the sliproad and leave the A19. Head east until you see this sign:
...and keep to the left to leave the dual carriageway. At the top of the sliproad, the hotel is visible on the other side of the road, so take a left, and then turn right into the hotel carpark.
Coming from the South: Again, get yourself onto the A19, this time north-bound. As you approach Middlesbrough, watch again for the A174 (signposted 'Redcar' and 'Teesport'), and take the sliproad down to the roundabout. Head right around the roundabout, and take the correct exit for the A174. From here, follow the instructions above.
Coming from the East If you're coming up the coast from Scarborough/Whitby way, you'll need to get yourself onto the A171, coming past Guisborough. As you travel along with the Eston hills on your right hand side, keep going until you approach a roundabout with a small 'Nunthorpe' sign on the side of the road. Take a left at this roundabout, signposted 'James Cook University Hospital'. This road will curve around to the right, and you'll hit another roundabout, called 'Poole Roundabout'. At this one, go straight over (ish), signposted 'Middlesbrough' and 'Marton'. This road will bring you through a small set of lights, then a larger junction with lights, past a Tesco garage, and a parade of shops on your right. Finally, you will come over the bridge over the A174, and the hotel is immediately on your right as you come through the set of lights.
Once you've got yourself to the Hotel, the entrance is adjacent to the car park. As you come inside, take a right, and head up the small corridor and into the Sun Room! Hopefully, I'll be able to pop out one of our Pendraken signs in the reception area so that people know where to go.
If you're coming from some random direction that I haven't included there, or are considering sky-diving in from above, let me know and I'll either sort some directions, or paint a giant 'X' in the hotel car park... :D
I'll also have my mobile on me all day, so if you get completely stuck, give me a bell on 07950 397669 and I'll get you back on track!
8)
Ave Mollinaary!

Have fun one and all. I can't make it as I'm on work cover on the Saturday combined with kid watching :(.
I made some BKC movement-ruler-type-thingies out of 6mm dowel for my participation game today. Some over enthusiastic tape measure "thwip" resulted in a few jungle palm casualties and the drastic shortening of a US marine's rifle barrel during a recent (solo, so I've no one to blame!!) playtest.

Cool thanks :)

Looks like the republic may have to sort a beer and bash then :D
Going to miss Tweks bash :(
Been at that one since early 90s.
Mind you last time I was taken of in an ambulance :-[
Heatstroke or injury?
Injury :(
Left me on crutches for months.
Never charge the King without checking for bodyguard :-[
I did like the old days though, pike units, random clansmen, bucket helm brigade. It was a bit mental in the early days :)
Yeah I was the same..always make sure you get you shield in the way when someone swings a bearded axe at you other wise you end up getting your thumb split in two and a trip to Drogheda Hospital to be looked after by nuns for a couple of days and forced to watch the Rose of Tralee festival on RTE
;D ;D
Not long to go now, only a couple of days! We're almost ready, just need to cast a load of stock, get some more Falkland's moulds done, build a new show stand for Minibits, and pack all the goodie bags. But apart from all that, we're ready to go!
#:-S :-bd
Numbers for the curry are confirmed at somewhere around 14-15 I reckon, depending on a couple of last minute maybe's!
We'll be meeting up at the hotel between 7-7:30pm and then we'll sort out getting up to the Indian from there. It's only a short walk (400yds-ish I think), but we'll have cars there as well.

We'll be there from 6-6:30am ish so anytime after then should be fine. As you come in the front entrance doors, turn right straight away and head up the corridor, we're in the room up the stairs.
I popped an email out to Dave I think with some details on it.
Just finished casting ACW stock, time to go home methinks! Nice big list of jobs to do tomorrow, including the first of the Falkland's figures!

Oooo - Must bring cash to purchase lots of Falklands lovelyness.. :)
Can't wait to see these 'in the flesh'. Must consult MicroMark B40M (Operation Corporate British 1982) and make a list. Surely a company each of Paras, Marines, Guards, SBS/SAS sections, plus support platoons at 1:1 will be enough. But then there's also the Argentine forces to consider. Maybe a batallion or two of them will suffice?
What a dilema.

First off, thanks to everyone who came along to the Birthday Bash, especially the guys who came and put on the games, they all looked fantastic! I'll be getting all my pics uploaded this afternoon, so keep an eye out for that thread.
Apologies for the trouble with the live feed though, we couldn't get it working on the tablet, so we had to make an emergency run to Maplins for a wireless webcam. That one worked, but it was a nightmare to get positioned properly, and then we had trouble with the lighting as well. I think if we were to try this again, we'd look at getting a few more camera's and doing some kind of multi-feed streaming so that there's more going on.

I'd fear a full moon more, they'll get taken off air for it!
There almost was, but we talked them out of it...! :D
It was a great night out, really enjoyed it! I heard the bar was indeed kept open until the early hours, I should have called back in on my way home from packing goodie bags!
:D
Had a great day yesterday - thanks to Leon and the team for organising something special, thanks to all the really great people who put on so many excellent games. And big thanks to Gavin for being such a splendid opponent and only cheating when it was important :)
So the main question is.... when do we do it again ? :)

just been sorting through the excellent WW2 toys I bought.,...
and really like the birthday figure, ...
but it feels wrong to keep it sitting in a box here
so, Ive two options.
1. Free to a good home , afraid its not my period, 18th century generaly type on a plinth as if a statue....
OR
2. I paint it up and maybe raffle or bid or something on here and moneys raised can go to charity of forums choosing?
any thoughts?
As much as I' want to say option 1, let's do option 2!
Hi
Happy Birthday
Big thanks to Leon and the Pendraken crew for the invite, all the hard work and the cake
most impressed with the quality of the (10mm) armies on display and in the games, specially the AWI converged British grenadiers and the marksmen/jaeger unit
Enjoyed the games, got some books and would have succumbed to the delights of the Scheslig - Holstien war, if some one had nt beaten us to it and bought all the army packs first, next show
definitely wins the award for friendliest show ever
cheers

I was asked that a few times during the day! We'll have a think about it and see what we think. The next obvious one would be the 25th Birthday, but it would be nice to have something a bit sooner.
