After the success of our 1809 Confederation project in late 2018, we're back with another expansion project, this time for the Napoleonic Peninsular period!
These ranges have been requested for many years and we're going big on this one, with 70 new codes planned along with stretch goals including flags, terrain, civilians and more. We've been working with Forum member John Cook to put together all of the reference material which has been sent over to our sculptor ready to get started. If funding is successful then we'll be getting everything sculpted over the coming months ready for moulding and shipping out to everyone by December of this year. So if you'd like a nice new project just in time for Christmas then jump in!
So how does it work?
- Below is a list of the prospective ranges we'll be putting together, with the code, a brief description of the contents, and the price.
- If you would be interested in any of these items, please check through the list, and work out what you would purchase.
- Make a post here, listing the items you would like to buy and stating what your pledge total would be. You can copy and paste the range lists from below and then add your quantities to make things easier.
- We'll add you to the pledge list!
- If we have hit our target by midnight on May 31st, we will contact you to confirm your order and everyone who has pledged will be invoiced for 50% of your order total. Our sculptor will be given the go-ahead and we'll get them done through Jun/Jul/Aug. We'll then get them moulded and start sending out customer orders by the end of November 2020, just in time for Christmas! Everyone will be invoiced for the remaining 50% + shipping once their order is ready to ship.
What's the target?
We're looking to raise purchases over £3600 in total to allow us to start production. This target covers all of the sculpting costs, and then we'll take on all moulding and casting costs at this end. The range would be sculpted by Tony Q, the same sculptor who has done all of our 1809 and 1812-15 Nap figures, so they'll match perfectly with our existing ranges.
So, what are we adding beyond the initial ranges?
At £4000 - We'll add flags to each nation, with 1 sheet for each of the British and Portuguese, and 2 sheets for the Spanish. UNLOCKED and available to add to your pledge!
At £4500 - We'll open up a new range of Mediterranean-style buildings for this period, including houses, church, villa, windmill and more! These will be produced by Ironclad Miniatures and will be ready at the same time as the figure ranges. We'll post some preview pictures of these as soon as we receive them. UNLOCKED and available to add to your pledge!
At £5000 - We'll add some ADC's to cover all of our Naps ranges. We've been asked about these a lot so we'll be looking for some input on what you want to see. Also, everyone who has ordered at least 5 packs from any nation will receive the flags for that nation for free. UNLOCKED and available to add to your pledge!
At £5500 - We'll add a set of mediterranean-style civilians suitable for the Peninsular period. UNLOCKED and available to add to your pledge!
At £6000 - If we hit our final planned goal, we'll add a 10% discount to all of the pledges, as a thank you for your amazing support. UNLOCKED, discounts all round!
At £7500 - We'll add a couple of handy wagons for this period, one small with mules, one large with oxen, as well as a mule train. UNLOCKED and available to add to your pledge!
At £8000 - We'll add some generic figures to cover the smaller Confederation of the Rhine states. These were influenced either by Prussian/Austrian or French-styles, with either a single-breasted or double-breasted, short-tailed jacket in the style of a Prussian/Austrian kollet or French habit-veste respectively. The differences, once hidden by cross-belts, are such that a single figure can represent both. In order to provide some variety, two types will be available: Type 1 in overall trousers and Type 2 in breeches and gaiters (all in shakos). UNLOCKED and available to add to your pledge!
So let's keep it going!

NOTE: There are a few items in these new ranges that will be pulled directly from our existing 1815 range. Things like the British lights, rifles and highlanders don't need to be sculpted again and we can use the existing figures to fulfill your orders. This allows us to reduce the number of sculpts required and the targets we need to hit.

UPDATES!
2nd May
And we've hit our funding goal within 24 hours! Thanks to everyone who has pledged so far, we'll contact the sculptor and give him the green light to get started! Next up will be the flags at £4000 which should be an easy one to hit!
3rd May
We've now blasted through the £4000 stretch goal so the flags are now unlocked for everyone as well! The response in a little over 24 hours has been incredible, thanks to everyone who has pledged so far.
3rd May
Your response has been amazing and we've now unlocked the buildings range as well! Let us know which of these you'd like to add and we'll get them included on your pledges. We'll also share some pictures of these as soon as we have them.
4th May
The pledging continues and we've now passed both the ADC target (£5000) and the Civilians (£5500) and the £6k is well in sight! We've now added the civilians to the list for you to add to your pledges. Anyone who has bought 5 or packs from any nation will now receive the flags for that nation for FREE! For the ADCs we're looking for your input into which nations and what styles you'd like to see, so let us know in this thread, along with pictures where possible: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,19714.0.html
8th May
Thanks for the patience while I was off work for a few days, but I'm back now and we've blown through all of the stretch goals! We'll be working up some extra bonuses over the weekend to give us all some more targets to aim for and we can keep this momentum going!
13th May
The ADC packs have now been unlocked and are available to add to your pledge!
14th May
We've now unlocked the wagons as well! These will include a mule train, small mule-drawn wagon and large oxen-drawn wagon, so add these to your pledge as well!
17th May
Our final goal is now unlocked with the generic Confederation of the Rhine codes now available! These figures will cover a variety of the smaller Confederation states, with the type 1 being in trousers and the type 2 being in breeches and gaiters.
1st June
And that's all folks, pledging is now closed! Thanks to all of you for your incredible support for this project, it went way beyond any of our expectaions and we really appreciate every single pledge we've received. We'll be working hard over the coming months to get these all sculpted and into moulds, so keep an eye out for pictures of the sculpts and buildings as we receive them!

I have one for all three armies if you need it.
Is it 3 guns per pack?
And how are British and Portuguese command packs filled out? Hopefully 2 standards bearers per officer & musician for the Brits?

Leon, quick question: Who's lined up for the sculpting? Same individual/ team responsible for the excellent 1809 scults?
Many thanks
Jon
"The range would be sculpted by Tony Q, the same sculptor who has done all of our 1809 and 1812-15 Nap figures, so they'll match perfectly with our existing ranges."
John Cook PM sent :)
Thanks for the pledges so far, really appreciated!

Currently £197.20, May need to add more later.
Great stuff, thanks for that!
This puts us over a third of the way to our funding target already!
I had been waiting for this range to come along for years and it comes just after I had made the mistake of putting in an order for Indian Mutiny figures (bit of desperation and I cannot fond any remotely suitable rules). Is it possible to transfer the money I sent for the Indian Mutiny figures (which have yet to arrive) as a down payment for Peninsula War figures (I will then make a substantial addition to the order).
I hope you can assist me
Regards
Michael Parker
Just codes marked with a quantity thanks
Am doing the Salamanca OOB in 1812, question for the experts, did the British Light Dragoons have the new uniform by then, or were they still in (worn out) Tarletons?
Mark
Hi Leon,
Can I just pledge how much I will contribute just now and have a look later on this week to confirm exactly what?
Basically I'm going to want most stuff, esp the Spanish and Portuguese....except of course I'll need Brit Cav in Bicornes and Lt dragoons too ....yes, I'll probably need most things.
Say £300 (£150 now, £150 later) I reckon as I will want all for 24 size cav units and 32 to 48 size inf btns, roughly 12 Btns Spanish, Port, guns etc so that sounds like a start. Actually edited to say that the Spanish range...oh my please!
That being said, if for some reason the pledges fell short of the target....I'd maybe squeeze some more in.
Really hope this gets going as I love the sculpts as easy to paint, robust for picking up and look good which is a tough combo.
cheers

I'm far from any expert but it appears those who are say they did. So get a pledge down, the helmets look better than the Shako on British Lights. Plus.....Hussars!

An impressive new range Pendraken
Our group already has substantial Napoleonic forces in 20mm & 6mm (we've refought Borodino) but nothing for the Peninsular :-\ X_X
Welcome Derek to the forum
This looks a very impressive range, looks like the not Kickstarter has got off to an excellent start. Fortunately for my bank balance its not my period. Had it been biblicals then that would have been another story.

Hmm should 2021 be the year I dip my toes into Napoleonics*.... Is the Peninsular a good area to start in? Napoleonics are a bit of a daunting one given the plethora of rule sets, various theatres and campaigns, and the long in depth discussions about hats and buttons. @-)
*I initially wrote "dip my toes into nappies"... but thought better of it.

Am doing the Salamanca OOB in 1812, question for the experts, did the British Light Dragoons have the new uniform by then, or were they still in (worn out) Tarletons?
Mark
Hi, This is another one of those 'nobody knows' questions. For what it is worth, I have some notes, attributed to Rene Chartrand who is a well known Canadian uniformoligist probably best known for his Osprey stuff, that 19thLD were still in the old uniform when they went to Canada in 1813. Their new uniforms were shipped later in the year. Canada is not Spain, I know, but it indicates how long it takes for changes to take place and the dates of clothing warrant etc do not indicate when the kit was issued. If I was doing Salamanca, I'd go for the old uniform.
Hi Leon,
Will you be doing an army pack?
I'm thinking of ordering a French one now and would order a British 1809 one.
If not I'll have to work it out myself ;D

We would be after the range has been released, but not as part of this funding campaign I'm afraid.
Wow! This is cracking along nicely. Fortunately Napoleonics don't do anything for me, so happy to watch this one (but I think once the new Samuari get sorted it might be a different matter...)
Thanks for adding me to the Forum as I couldnt post a pledge as a guest where I have lurked for a while. £333.30 pledged by email as noted.
And now yes please to 1 each of the flags. definitely to the civilians as well when they are added. A must to look after any French wounded. (by killing them!)
Having spent all of ten minutes carefully studying OOBs , multiple ruleset basing rules and planning figure need, I hope there will be a chance for small corrections (upwards) later.
And I am in total awe of SultanBev's planned army before its even cast!!
PS I haven't checked through the existing catalog yet but when your sculptor gets the time/the funding goes way over my lads will also need mules, carts, hand carts, Spanish and civilian casualties, and a Frank Sinatra look alike to ride a 20mm range gun.

Thanks for the pledge and welcome to the Forum! With the ways things are going currently then we'll be needing some stretch goals beyond our initial £6000 plans so more casualties or carts might be a nice idea.

Not yet I'm afraid, same as with the sculpts they've not been started yet. I've asked John at Ironclad to send me some progress pics as soon as he's got any. I'll see if he's got any images of the type/style of buildings he's putting together for us.
Leon:
For the Spanish, you have troops in the 1805 uniform c1807 and c1809-10. Can you tell us the difference between the two? My guess is the headwear.
Sincerely,

Will add a little to the cause (I'm not a nappy player - but buildings are pretty universal...)

Yep, as you'll have seen in that thread, the c1807 troops are in the earlier formal dress, whereas the c1809-10 are the more ragtag bunch.
I'll paste the info here in case anyone else needs it:
The 'c1807' figures are in the Pattern 1805 uniform of the old Spanish army, bicornes, short tailed coats, long for officers (long tailed coats generally were last used on the Pattern 1797 uniform). They comprise fusiliers in a bicorn and grenadiers in a bearskin with the characteristic 'flame' at the back, breeches and gaiters with knapsacks, cartridge pouches etc as per the regs. These figures represent the Bourbon army that was involved in the invasion of Portugal in 1807 and the resistance to the French occupation in 1808. There were, incidentally, at least two regiments still in the 1797 uniform in 1808, and 12 in the blue Pattern 1802 uniform.
The 'c1809-1810' figures reflect the remains of the old regular army that still formed an important part of the five regional armies (Ejércitos Regionales) established towards the end of 1808. They are still in the pattern 1805 uniform, but it reflects the 'distressed' state they had become by c1809. Trousers replace breeches and blanket rolls replace knapsack, some will haversacks and civilian water bottles and so on.
Also included are some types of the volunteer and provincially raised troops that can't be sourced from the 1809 and 1815 ranges, notably militia in civilian clothes and provincial types with the Chistera hat, such as those raised in Seville, Andalucia, Navarre and Catalonia for example.
Finally, there are the uniforms authorised for the infantry of the 'Ejercito Nacional' in 1811, 'c1812-1814'. These were British supplied and started to arrive in Portugal in mid-1812. They never replaced other types and styles completely.
Just as I thought I was going to avoid paying money on this as its not my period , you bring buildings into the mix. This will do nicely for WSS as well.

Thanks for the recommendation for "Sepoy": I have tried to order a copy from Caliver Books who used to publish and wait to see what will happen as they are no longer listed.
That is kind of you but looking at how many books I have on the Mutiny I think I had better stick: I don't think I could cope with all of the figures I would need for the Peninsula War although it is very tempting unless there is to be a long delay in supplying the Mutiny figures. You did know there was such a thing as a Samurai Napoleonic army, right? It just never fought anybody, other than a brief encounter with the RN in 1808. I do have an army list somewhere.....
Mark
You can count us in on this as we will be stocking the Peninsular Napoleonics as well...
Not sure how to state this pledge based on our email with Leon, but we'll start with that pledge, which I believe comes to £300 and go from there.
Ok finally trimmed it down after realising that I could order some Brits now and I won't have painted this lot by next Falkirk show when I can get some more so I don't have to get every combination

Hi Mike, The Pattern 1805 c1807 represent the infantry at the start of the war, properly uniformed and accoutred as per the regulations. The Pattern 1805 c1809-1810 represent the army after a year of campaigning and repeated defeats, they are in every sense, 'distressed'.

Thanks for the pledge, we'll get that added!
The pledging continues and we've now passed both the ADC target (£5000) and the Civilians (£5500) and the £6k is well in sight! We've now added the civilians to the list for you to add to your pledges. For the ADCs we're looking for your input into which nations and what styles you'd like to see, so let us know in this thread, along with pictures where possible: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,19714.0.html
I notice yet another new member, Hi Mike !
And welcome from me as well, Mike ! :-h

Hello and welcome Mike
Hi Leon,
I see that you've added a more detailed description of what uniforms the Spanish figures will be wearing.
Is it possible for me to change some of the codes that I've ordered, now that I have a better idea of what the figures in each pack will look like? Better yet, could I just pledge a new (higher) total amount - say £120 - and specify the specific packs/codes later?
Cheers,
Derek L.

Hi guys, I'm an utter novice when it comes to the big boys game of Napoleonic's but I've picked the Brits and Portuguese straw so put me down for at least £50.00's worth. I've no idea yet Leon what it will entail as I need to look up OB's etc and work out a starting point, but the intention is there. Probably end up being more in the end.
Scanning through the proposed list is it possible to add suggestions? Can you add a British / Highland line Centre Company and Flank company kneeling to receive a charge (Stovepipe shako version of NBR3)
Quick Question, I see you have Highlanders on the list for sculpting, how would these be different from the Waterloo 1815 Highlanders?
All the best Leon and congratulations on the success of the Kickstarter.
Jon
And if you are open to more suggestions as the pledges go up and up :D, any chance of a mule drawn supply wagon, to make up the essential supply train, and for lugging Marshal Massena's personal stash of travel souvenir's ;D ;D ;D

Can I request that any new mules look like their load is very heavy with their heads hanging down.

Hello....It's Adele posting on behalf of Leon.
Hope you are all well, Leon would like to offer his apologies for not replying and keeping the thread up to date but he's gone and given himself food poisoning yesterday!
He's unfortunately going to be out of the business for a couple of days so it may take longer than usual to reply to things. I'm sure once he can he'll get back on the computer at home and get back on track. I'm dealing with the emails/orders daily so you can still get in touch if you need to.
Stay safe,
Milady xx
Best wishes for mild and brief symptoms. I had a bad one once in China - couldn't even keep a glass of water down for a few days.
Many thanks for the update Milady
We all wish Leon a rapid recovering so he can resume doing your bidding
I hope Leon is on the mend as soon as possible, food poisoning is no laughing matter, it's awful so get well sooon. This is what I had in mind for the baggage train, my bad request should have said bullock drawn wagon (complete with Spanish attendants), some "Mollies" (camp followers) tagging along would be fantastic.

Yes, indeed. You can see how the poor wee mule's not really up to that task. Moore originally had 40 bullock carts and 322 mules. A couple of years later the quartermasters had to deal with 800 bullock carts and 12,000 mules.
Get well soon Leon
At the risk of reminding Leon of the importance of safe food supplies, I echo Danny Boys request for wagons. Mule and hand drawn as well. And camp followers, refugees,.....
get well soon. We need you.

Yes, you can put in height= or width=
Correct spacing is essential. A gap between img and width or height but then width= or height= and the number as though they were all one word.

I must say I'm slightly surprised to find I haven't had food poisoning during this lock-down given my habit of thinking "it'll be fine" on finding a tin marked Best Before some time in 2014 or 2016 or whatever at the back of the tins shelf.
Twenty or so years ago, I had a letter from the local health authority.....Telling me that I had a 'Notifiable disease'. :o :o :o :o :o
It was something called Campylobacta....(I truly can't be bothered to look up the correct spelling.)......It was basically a really vile 'tummy bug'....akin to salmonella.....but a lot less dire than that.

First off, thanks for all of the kind messages while I've been off. I'm getting there today so starting to work through all of the emails that I've missed. Apologies to anyone still waiting on a reply, I should have them all done by Sat evening. Also to anyone waiting on an order, I've not been able to confirm any of the postage from Tues/Wed/Thurs so there's probably 150-200 orders waiting on their shipment confimation emails to be sent out.
Now, moving on to the crazy response to this project! You're pledging faster than I can add stretch goals so give me a day or two to work through some options and we'll get some of your suggestions added to the campaign!

Quick Question, I see you have Highlanders on the list for sculpting, how would these be different from the Waterloo 1815 Highlanders?
We'll have a think on the kneeling to receive figure and see if we can do a quick conversion on it. The Highlanders are all the same I believe, so we'll be using the existing 1815 figures for those codes.

Glad to hear both off you are on the mend and as others have said, don't rush back until you're 100% better. Our orders can wait a day or two I'm sure.

Seconded. Skirmishing light companies in mixed advancing/firing/loading, standing & kneeling
Sanish? Fighting their dreaded foes the Madish?

Thanks for the pledge Bertie, I've added that to the total! We'll be having a chat this coming week to see what else we can add to the ranges so we'll have a think about some skirmishing codes.
Skirmishing codes would be useful across the all the ranges, especially the Cazadores/Cacadores chaps. The Guerillas too I would imagine :).

Skirmishers would be a nice addition. I'd purchase some of those.
Stretch Goal £8,000 - Camp followers please, essential for baggage elements. Walking with load and child, camp fire etc. Something generic which could be used from AWI all the way through Napoleonic/ ACW/ FPW period please.
I'd be thinking of adding more Spanish cavalry types of the 1811-1814 era, as described in the Osprey MAA332, for example plate C3 and H2 and MAA334 plates D2, D3, G1 perhaps,

Most of these styles can be sourced from the 1809 and 1815 ranges can they not?
Not sure.
A lancer in a Tarleton? Perhaps if the British light dragoons cavalry in Tarleton come with standard bearers?
There's teh Navara Hussars not in dolman and pelisse but with chest 'ribbing' lace in bell-top shako, so French chasseur a cheval might do as long as it doesn't have the blanket roll across the body.
Some of the later Hussars had a busby like the French guard light cavalry or British hussar thats not in shako, do we have something like that? NBR18 British Hussar looks to be in busby.
Then there is the last plate in MAA332 of Numancia dragoons of a crested helmet with a quite large crest, with no plume, enormous crest in fact, bigger than the Wurttemburg one and on a par with 1814 Sardinian cavalry. Perhaps Wurttemburg NWU9 Jager zu Pferd might do, dunno if you can cut off plumes in 10mm without wrecking the crest.
Mark
I thought when initially discussed we included a generic French 'German' ally in short-tailed German coat, suitable for Westfalia and others - the German division is a perennial favourite and distinct to the Peninsula so would make a decent additional stretch goal.
Good point re the Germans, probably more useful than random selection of Spanish cavalry that would only be sold in small numbers.

You asked for suggestions for the ADC pack. My preference would be for plainly dressed, business-like chaps: covered bicorne and cloak or greatcoat (avoids the need for decisions on epaulettes on coatees). With poses such as pointing, with map, with telescope - on standing horses (foot versions would be good too) - and maybe a staff galloper going hell-for-leather (in a cloak he could be a British 'Exploring Officer'). A suggested source is plate 20a - Portuguese Staff Officer - by Mike Chappell in Haythornthwaite's 'Uniforms of the Peninsular War 1807-1814 (Blandford 1978) - happy to supply a scan. This would make them fairly multi-national and they could do service as staff officers, ADCs, engineers, even generals.
I'll introduce myself soon.
Thanks.
Robin

WAT 3 MORE, Hi all
Hi Leon,
Just a quick reply, firstly to see if I can get to grips with this new technology ( I'm firmly a pen and paper guy) and secondly to thank you for all your assistance with getting me "logged " in and sorting out my pledges. I've only been collecting your figures for a couple of years, but other figures for approximately 45 years. Your service is fantastic and you are always very helpful. Keep up the great work!
Could I please put in my two pence worth;
Ref. ADCs. British— staff corps uniform holding carbine in hip along with dashing Exploring Officer in bicorne hat.
Spanish— dashing officer in busby galloping.
Portuguese— a "portly " Officer looking at map.
Ref. Wagons— British supply wagon.
British Engineers wagon with equipment ie ladders, barrels etc.
Water cart for all countries
Mule pulled civilians cart
Ref. More ideas for " Bonus " targets— Naval landing party inc Officer
Royal Marines
Ships longboat and crew
Assault party for sieges ie carrying ladders/ fascines etc
Forlorn hope group
Thanks again.

Set of Pontoonier figures in shirtsleeves ( could be used for any nation)
Surgeon with assistants and wounded figure on table ( again in shirtsleeves use for any nation)
Caissons for French etc
French Ambulance 2 or 4 wheeled
I would second a set of camp followers/ camp set / Regimental wives washing, cooking etc
Pontoon wagon

We've finalised the plans for the ADCs, so we've now added a selection of ADC/General types to a variety of ranges, as well as a Beresford figure for the Portuguese. Let us know if you'd like to add any of these to your pledges!
British
NPB23 British ADCs/Generals (3 poses) £1.20
Portuguese
NPP16 General Beresford (1) £0.75
Spanish
NSP31 Spanish ADCs/Generals (3 poses) £1.20
French
NPF45 French ADCs/Generals (3 poses) £1.20
Prussian
NPR21 Prussian ADCs/Generals (3 poses) £1.20
Duchy of Warsaw
NDW15 Polish General in czapska (1 pose) £0.55
We've also added another stretch goal at £8000, where we'll add some generic Confederation of the Rhine figures to the project:
The infantry uniforms of the Confederation of the Rhine states were influenced either by Prussian/Austrian or French-styles. Some wore a French-style long-tailed coat (habit) with an exposed waistcoat and these types can be sourced from the French 1809 range. Others wore either a single-breasted or double-breasted, short-tailed jacket in the style of a Prussian/Austrian kollet or French habit-veste respectively. The differences, once hidden by cross-belts, are such that a single figure can represent both. To cover these, two types will be available, all in shakos:
- CoTR Type 1, as described, in overall trousers (2 x fusiliers, 2 x grenadiers)
- CoTR Type 2, as described, in breeches and gaiters (2 x fusiliers, 2 x grenadiers)
Please add the following to my pledge;
NBP23. British ADCs. £1.20
NPR21. Prussian ADCs. £1.20
NSP31. Spanish ADCs. £1.20
NPF45. French ADCs. £1.20

The thinking was that the Austrians have had their command pack already so they've been getting preferential treatment for a while! We can add one if folks really want it but I'm getting a little wary of adding too many extra sculpts and impacting our delivery dates. I think the £8000 goal would be the last expansion on the sculpts side of things, any goals beyond that would need to be other items/bonuses.

I think it comes to £4.90

How about a bonus of MDF bases? say:-
For each full size pack of the kickstarter ordered (ie 30 infantry, 15 cavalry) you can order a single pack of bases at a small discount?
or
For each £20 spent on the kickstarter you can order x number of packs of bases at a small discount?
When I say discount I am thinking just a a few pence.
This might be very attractive as I assume lots of them will be based on your bases anyway. It would also give a greater reward to those who have invested more in the kickstarter. It is also something you are already geared up to produce.
Thanks for all of the extra pledges, we've now broken through the £7500 target as well so we've opened up the carts/wagons!
NPX14 Mule train (6 mules + driver) £2.50
NPX15 Small cart with mules (2 per pack) £3.50
NPX16 Wagons with oxen (2 per pack) £5.50
Again, let us know if you'd like any of these adding to your pledges. We've got a couple of images for these currently but if anyone has any more pics, that would be a great help when it comes to designing these.

I would pledge towards 1812 Russians in a heart beat.
An 1812 Russian range, would of course be in the earlier 1805 style shakos and as such I would pledge for it.
1813/14 kiwer, not interested.
Thanks for the info Zippee I have always thought the shako "kiwer" had roughly 3 periods;
1805ish— shako cylindrical slightly tapering at the top.
1809ish— shako roughly in the French style.
1812ish— shako commonly known as "kiwer" scuttle style.
Although there has always been uncertainty about if the kiwer was as widely introduced as some historians/artists have popularised.
It is purely a personal preference of mine I think it looks good and makes in my opinion the Russian units stand out. I've always been tempt by the "pleasing to the eye" look than historically correct image. Its a weakness of mine.

Are there any sketches of the buildings, I could be tempted by some of those?
As someone who doesn't do Napoleonics - if I wanted to do some Sharpe style games, say with Rebels and Patriots so 12 figure units. What kind of figures would I need? British Rifles being the obvious answer. And which French?
So having done some research on OOBs, rulesets and bases, (should i get out more? Oh I cant!) I know I will need the following in addition to the previous pledge. I have put the flags at 0 cost but I havent done the 10% . Do we put in an order the traditional way for existing codes? For sure I will need some KGL and casualty markers. We've asked John to send us some progress pics before the end of the month, so that folks can get an idea of what's going to be produced.

Anyway please add the following. Sorry about the formatting
Thanks for the extra items, I've got those added now and we'll deal with the free flags and discounts once it comes to the first round of invoicing at the end of this month.

Excellent, I've added you to the pledge list. We've only got 3 poses planned at the moment, otherwise we'd have to add a 4th pose to all of the ADC/General packs. There might be a suitable hussar officer option though, after seeing your other thread with the pics. We've got a horse limber team already sculpted which has never been released, so the team officer for those might match your requirements.

The Confederation infantry are now unlocked as well!
Confederation of the Rhine infantry
NCR1 Confederation of the Rhine fusiliers, type 1 £5.50
NCR2 Confederation of the Rhine grenadiers, type 1 (16) £2.95
NCR3 Confederation of the Rhine fusiliers, type 2 £5.50
NCR4 Confederation of the Rhine grenadiers, type 2 (16) £2.95
These were influenced either by Prussian/Austrian or French-styles, with either a single-breasted or double-breasted, short-tailed jacket in the style of a Prussian/Austrian kollet or French habit-veste respectively. The differences, once hidden by cross-belts, are such that a single figure can represent both. Type 1 will be in overall trousers and Type 2 in breeches and gaiters (all in shakos).

Thanks for the info Zippee I have always thought the shako "kiwer" had roughly 3 periods;
🐵
I feel in terms of 10mm differentations we have broadly two uniforms (plus the earlier Potemkin and Rev War styles);
1805-11 - cylindrical shako, bush plumes, cavalry with full raupe crests
1811-15 - kiwer shako, thin plumes, cavalry in razor cut horsehair crests
I was referring to the fact that IMO (much like the French) the 'new 1812' uniform wasn't actually worn in the 1812 campaign as such but is more the preserve of the 1813/14 campaigns. Although I'm sure there are exceptions.
To accompany the 1809 'mid-war' ranges, the 1805-11 style is the correct* one.
To accompany the 1815 'late-war' ranges, the 1811-15 style is the correct* one
Anyway all this is for a later discussion as the one thing we can say is that the Russians had minimal involvement in the Peninsula!
*in as much as we can say anything is 'correct' ;D
You're quite right Zippee, it's for another time and kickstarter, but hopefully Leon will do both and we'll both be happy to pledge towards it.( gentle hint Leon😁)Thanks.

Russian musketeers received their first felt shako, called a 'shapki' in 1803. An improved type was authorised for musketeers and grenadiers 1805. In 1807 it received leather reinforcements around the top and at the sides, and a new name - the 'kiver'. The characteristic shako with the concave top, authorised in 1812 was also called a 'kiver'. I have seen it said that 'flash to bang' for these new pieces of kit was at about a year.
There is also the matter of knapsacks. The cylindrical one was replaced by a square one in 1808 so there would be a need for three different Russian infantry figures to cover the major campaigns of the period.
Ok one last time.

I'm not convinced the added bands on the shako would really matter in 10mm if it was just that, which is why I disregarded it. The backpack is a good point though, I tend to forget the change doesn't correspond to the headgear change. And it is highly noticeable.
That means
Early War - 1803-07 cylindrical shako, busch plume, cylindrical backpack
Mid War - 1808-1811 reinforced shako, busch plume, square backpack*
Late War - 1812-15 concave 'kiwer' shako, thin plumes, square backpack
I know the Mid War uniform is actually the most likely for the 1812 campaign but I have to question how popular it would be, I suspect the average parsimonious wargamer would plump for Early or Late (mostly Late) be nice to see it though, are there any others in existence?
*I think the cavalry and artillery remain Early/Late - I can't immediately think of any major differences for the middle period, unless shakos ...

Looking for some advice ref British Fusiliers wearing bearskins (yes I know they didn't wear them on campaign) but in my army they do as I'm the general! And as stated before if it looks good then they're in ! Who can resist a battalion or two? Bearing in mind my limitations on converting figures could anyone suggest any "stand in" figures from any Pendraken range given a paint job that would pass a quick inspection ?
Thanks in advance.

And if I want to give the battalion a goat mascot l will.historically correct or not.

I know they seem de rigour in 13/14 were they a routine field item earlier?
Hi Leon,
Can you add the following to my order.
NPB23 x 3
NPP16 x 1
NPR21 x 3
I am tempted with the Rhine infantry but.. Have you had chance to consider skirmish figures for all the Peninsular range. Thet would be fantastic garnish for the table and make great skirmish screens for the rules.
Are the light infantry figures not in 'Firing Line' poses?

Yes, on 11 June 1809 cords were authorised for all lower ranks. White for privates and white with a mixture of black and orange for NCOs and musicians.
I always wonder if these kinds of embellishments lasted very long on campaign though.

I know, this has gone way beyond our expectations! We'll have to get them all sculpted now and make sure that Santa has them delivered in time for Christmas!
You'll need Santa to get that many deliveries done in time ;)

1 I and most (not all) of the Forum don't believe in santa.
2.

Confession time Comrades, I use Pendraken 1809 Hungarians as Russians. My Hungarian ancestors would probably have me drawn and quartered for this affront.

Meh, British. At 10mm scale, is there really a big difference? If somebody don't likey, they can scoot off.
"What are people thinking of using for Portuguese skirmishers? Both the line and Cacadores are In March attack poses I believe. "
I'll be basing the Cacadores on skirmish bases, regardless of what pose they are in.

I'm thinking of the Portuguese for the Portuguese Legion, and the provincial infantry in chistera hat for Austrian Landwehr in similar top hat. The Spanish, though, may have their cartridge pouches in front rather than behind - which would otherwise be marvellous for the Tirailleurs Corses that are on my list to convert!

Hi Michael,
I don't really think so, without some modification. The chistera doesn't have the turned up brim characteristic of the Corsehut worn by Austrian Landwehr. The Portuguese line might do as surrogates for the Portuguese Legion but I think you'll need to add fringed epaulettes and short swords.

Hi John
Thanks for that. Not the usual Corsehut but the same type of top hat. Lots of examples like these gentlemen.
There were a good number of regions sporting the top hat rather than/and also the Corsehut.
Portuguese can get greenstuff epaulettes but they may have their hangers (sabres) left back at the depot.
Cheers, Michael

Wow! £10,000+ congrats folks!
10k,
Wonder what Russia will bring in! ;D
And that's all folks, pledging is now closed! Thanks to all of you for your incredible support for this project, it went way beyond any of our expectations and we really appreciate every single pledge we've received. We'll be working hard over the coming months to get these all sculpted and into moulds, so keep an eye out for pictures of the sculpts and buildings as we receive them!
To everyone who has backed this project, we'll be contacting you in the next few days to confirm that you are happy with everything on your pledge. You'll receive a spreadsheet by email where you can check and edit your order before submitting it to us, and we'll then send you a PayPal invoice for the deposit amount. The balance will be due once the figures are ready to ship.
Well done, everyone! Excellent to see a real positive vote for 10mm Napoleonics!
=D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
Well that should get Leon busy for a bit.
Not an arena I fight in, but a success story like this is good to see. :)
Congratulations Leon! A BIG positive thumbs up to the10mm Napoleonic collectors out there. Maybe the way forward is " non kickstarters" for future ranges! Well done to everyone who has supported this scheme and showing how popular and strong the hobby still is! 😁
Although I don't envy your work load over the coming months 😬
🐵
Chuffed to bits for you, Leon !! :)
Cheers - Phil
An excellent result for sure and the way to go for future ranges IMHO.
Fab
I am very pleased to see how well this has worked for you, Leon
Now be ready for lots of posts " Are thwepeninsular Napoleonics ready yet?" . "When will the buildings be out?" - the wargamers equivalent of "are we there yet?"
and of course - in mid September:-
" I missed the Peninsular Napoleonic Kickstarter. Can I place an order now and get the freebies that were offered on the Kickstarter?"
I think I must have encouraged Leon to do a Peninsular range for at least the past two years, and having been involved in planning this one I am so pleased it has been the success it has, and more than a bit relieved.
It only goes to show, I think, that the Napoleonic period probably remains in the top three, together with WW2 and the ACW.
I wonder what this means for further non-kickstarter Napoleonic expansions? The Prussians and French are already more or less there for the 1813-14 campaigns, the Austrians more or less, which seems to point to the Russians as the next logical 'add-on'. This would certainly complete the late Napoleonic wars and would be a relatively easy project. It would also cover Russia 1812 which seems to interest a number of people judging by forum posts.
It seem obvious and is definitely where I'd go next.
Glad to see this be a big success.
Peninsula is not my cup o' tea but I knew it would be hugely popular.
I tend to agree with John for the next one being a comprehensive Russian line but I'm also aware that we are still awaiting much of the French guard and there infills like Austrians with German shakos / Hungarian helmets and some others that are needed. Perhaps they might make a nice infill or provide stretch goals alongside some expanded artillery park items?
And for the love of all things Hapsburg WURST riders and guns!
I too would back an 1811-1813 Russian line, including Bashkirs and Tarters with bows.

Swedes and Ottomans (Ottomen?) :D
I got the impression from previous forum posts that the most popular Napoleonics choice always going to be one of the following:
Napoleonic Peninsula
War of 1812
Wellington in India
Completing the Peninsula now creates the Brits for the other two ranges, so they're one-third done already.
My personal wish list is, in order of priority:
Ottoman Turks
War in Indian sub-continent
War of 1812
Russians 1811-1814ish
Swedes
Persians
Neapolitans 1812-1815
Revolutionary Wars
Which should keep Leon and his sculptors in work until the Collapse of Global Industrial Civilisation.
According to some its much too early to be suggesting or discussing a Russian kickstarter and what people would like to see included in the " extensive " list, if or when it may come about.
Hay hum .🤨
As stated before IMHO I would support the idea of a Napoleonic Russian Kickstarter as soon as Leon can conjure up some spare time between all the requests flooding in daily.Could be as good or better than the Peninsular kickstarter.
Again congrats Leon keep up the great work!
🐵
Well.....It'll keep 'X' busy......'Naps' are his 'bag'......
I've got enough to try and keep up with already......
I've done the Persians already, haven't I ? (Gibber, gibber.)......Or is this another lot of Persians that I'm not aware of. 8-} 8-} 8-}
Cheers - Phil ;)
"I've done the Persians already, haven't I ? (Gibber, gibber.)......Or is this another lot of Persians that I'm not aware of."
Yes, the Qajar Persians 1795-1815. We tend to forget our Napoleonic Russians were at war with Persia 1803-1813, tying down 100,000 troops the Russians might have found useful elsewhere.
The same Persian figures would probably do for the 1856 war with Britain too.
It wouldn't be a big range, probably:
Nizam regular infantry (advancing, firing, command)
Irregular city matchlockmen Tufangchis (one pose, + command)
Russian Guard Battalion (advancing, command)
Irregular Jezailies (advancing, firing, command)
regular artillery crew
irregular artillery crew
(artillery from existing Napoleonic and Indian Mutiny ranges)
armoured heavy cavalry (one pose + command)
Kurdish lancers (one pose + command, there was only one unit of these)
Qajar light horse (musket, bow, lance variants + command)
Zembuk regular camel guns
with, suitable for lots of armies/periods:
Bedouin foot with matchlocks
Bedouin camelry with spear
Bedouin camelry with matchlock
Bedouin cavalry with spear
Bedouiin cavalry with matchlock
Mark
Lots to think about for the next one, certainly. I think our preference would be to get the Russians done as it's a slightly smaller project and should be a quick turnaround to fill a needed gap. After that we're really tempted to go into the Revolution as we've had requests for that for years and it could be a another big project, similar to this one I'd expect. And then there's 1812 and India as Mark says...!

Apparently the most popular are WW2, Napoleonic and ACW in that order, which has been unchanged for as long as I can remember. I've no idea how 'they' arrived at this result but when you consider that there is wargaming life beyond these shores - I'm thinking of the US - then it does make sense.

Most ancients gamers - let alone the others - hardly know that the Sassanids were Persians, let alone all the others. You are not alone in your bewilderment.
And a few Persians I've chatted to (yes, they do call themselves Persians) are more than a bit tired of having most of the world think they're Arabs.

This would tend to agree - though I suspect shows more of a distribution of Wargames Illustrated readers than the wargaming population as a whole!
I think those 3 would be true for the hobby as a whole, but our Ancients ranges need some attention so we're probably not getting the sales volume that others are. For us the ACW is a solid 3rd place and has been for quite a few years now.

Yes, ancients has always been pretty strong in my experience. I have just looked at another survey which put the popularity of periods as World War 2, SF, Fantasy, Medieval and Ancient. I don't know what to make of that. I also don't know what is meant by Horse and Musket in the WI survey.

I would imagine H&M is meant to cover 18th and 19th century conflicts not covered by the named conflicts. Inaccurate as that is! Ancient can also be vague as many class ancient as anything pre renaissance, but here it's split up with dark age and medieval, again somewhat vague boundary periods.

I prefer to keep to one manufacturer for all my projects, that way you don't have clashes of styles or interpretations of what 10mm should be. Unless a range is complete I'll go somewhere else, or wait until it is.
I've waited forty years for there to be enough figures to create reasonable facsimiles of the basic troops for Early Bronze Age Mesopotamia .... I doubt I have another 40 in me :)

I'm sure that mule cart effect can be achieved by simply tilting a standard model ;)
Someone please alert the Donkey Sanctuary to expect another arrival; although, seriously, the way animals get treated in such situations is appalling and counterproductive because if it dies they have the expense of new one.
Whilst the Peninsula War is some way down my to-do-list, the list of buildings did catch my eye. I suspect I'm too late to add my tuppenceworth that perhaps the building sculpts could have similar footprints to, or be compatible with, the Total Battle Miniatures range.
People get upset when figure ranges don't match each other but it's just the same with buildings. You see a picture of a nice bridge and then find its so large that it looks comparable to London Bridge against the houses or that a nice church turns out small enough to pass as a Crematorium Chapel.

You mean to say you do not have a church and a crematorium chapel for all scales you game in. :o :o
I have to confess in 20mm I have an English style church, The church at St Mere Eglise, A more European Church and a cemetery with an Ossary/crematorium. I thought that was normal! :-[

Just a quick update on the Peninsular project to keep everyone informed as to where we are with things.
Our sculptor (Tony) is still looking after his father in Somerset and hasn't been able to start on the sculpting side of things yet. The initial diagnosis was that this would essentially be end-of-life care but the good news is that his father has recovered well and they're now looking at getting some social care in for a longer-term solution. Tony's also working on converting a large shed into a workshop so that he can resume sculpting from his dad's house. We're not sure on timescales at the moment but we'll let you know as soon as we have more info.
We also found out today that John at Ironclad had a heart attack last night and is currently in hospital awaiting test results. He'd made a start on the buildings for the Peninsular project but obviously we won't be pestering him for those until he's back on his feet. Our best wishes go out to John and hopefully he recovers quickly.
The current plan is to send out your pledges in batches, rather than one complete box. If we can get the 'Add On' type stuff done (flags, buildings, wagons, civilians) we'll send those out to you first and give you something to work on. The figures can then follow on separately when they've been sculpted and moulded.
And finally, thanks to everyone for your patience with this and we'll get your pledges sorted out as quickly as we can. 2020 just seems to be a year of absolute chaos so the sooner it's over the better I think!
Very best wishes to Tony and his Dad.....And also to John at Ironclad.
Cheers - Phil
Likewise from me
Best wishes to all.
All the best to John, Tony and Tony's Dad!
"2020 just seems to be a year of absolute chaos so the sooner it's over the better I think!" Be careful what you wish for :)
Not convinced 2021 is shaping up to be much better :(
indeed, best wishes to all.
Best wishes to all and fingers crossed. In the grand scheme of things, a delay in the release of the range is no big deal.
Great news for Tony and his Dad :) :) :)
Best wishes to John
Best wishes the families of both, take care
Best wishes to all.

Apologies for the delay on things, 2020 hasn't been a great year so far... The good news is that Tony's started sculpting again and is working on the first batch now. I think he's going to do the civvies, mule trains, etc first as a bit of an easier job, before jumping into the British. We'll be moulding the sculpts as soon as they land with us and then we can look at sending your pledges out in batches rather than one big box.
Leon, sending the items out in batches rather than all at once may in the end turn out to be a blessing, as we're gonna be less overwhelmed with stuff to paint!

I'd like to have a batch ready to go out before Christmas but it's going to depend on the sculptor at this point. We've got the wagons here so if we can get mules/horses and civvies in time, we can get the Misc section done and sent out to folks. I've got the flags already done and printed as well, so we could send those. Although a flag sheet isn't much use without figures to put them on!
Personally I don't mind waiting as I would prefer to get my order in one batch. But I will go with the flow...

I think John's been similar, he said how drained and lethargic he feels since the operation and it's taking him some time to get back to just 80-90% of his previous capacity. He's exercising a lot more and he's getting there slowly.

Actually, Leon should get more of them onto facebook to tempt more people into the Pendraken world. Or get them into the 28mm dominated glossy mags. :D :D
well they arrived! <:-P
And very nice they all are too. But particular :-bd to the Brit firing line, the Brunswickers, the Dragoons in Bicornes and the wagons.
Looking forward to the Spanish and Portugese!
Mine arrived on Saturday and look very good. I'm aiming to build a force for Hill's Estremadura operations July 1811 to August 1812.
Edward
Mine arrived this morning (Monday). The buildings look absolutely fabulous now I must try and find my original order
and work out just what each code for the figures are it has been so long I had forgotten what figures I had ordered.
Mine was delivered to my recycling bin while I was asleep. Safely retrieved. Honestly, it's less hassle than having to go online and arrange a redelivery.
Good to hear that packages are arriving safely!

I like to think it was employee initiative. I chat to the postie regularly and mentioned a week or two ago that Amazon deliveries are often delivered to the recycling bin if neither I nor my immediate neighbours are around and that, providing it wasn't so empty that I had to dive in head first, it wasn't a problem.
Bin is half full and the top layer is a large, crumpled, sheet of clean brown paper.
Package arrived safe and sound. They have got the juices flowing! However, still working my way through 1809 stuff!
Brilliant figures and buildings. Well done to all involved in the project.

No worries, shoot me an email with anything you need and we'll get them sorted.
Got mine today. Couldn't be more pleased with them. Now get those Spanish completed.
I got my British the other week and a reasonable order of French yesterday.
Very nice.
Aiming to build the French for both 1809 vs Austria and 1811-12 for Peninsular. I've realised that for Massena's 1809 IV Corps I'm going to have to get An XI 6pdrs at some point - I think the Brunswickers with 'French 6pdr' would probably work. At some point I will also pick up some carabiniers for dragoon elite companies.
I've realised that the British (and forthcoming Portuguese) will fit very well with my idea for an Estremadura campaign mid 1811-12.

A big update today, as all of the British, Brunswickers and Misc items have been posted out and packages should be arriving with everyone very soon! There's a selection of buildings in some of your packages as well, but we've only received an initial batch of stock on those and we quickly ran out. We'll get more buildings soon, along with more sculpts hopefully, and we can really crack on and get this all out to you.
Not that I've actually got space in my queue atm, but any news on the rest of the buildings, please Leon?
It's solely jealousy :D

Luckily I'd already done some thinking about basing, rules etc. Bases 30mm frontage (8 close order infantry, 3 cavalry, artillery TBC), Standard infantry units 4 bases (small 3, large 5), cavalry regiments 6 bases (small 4, large 8). General d'Armee for rules but able to use others where necessary e.g. Field of Battle.
But painting will take a while and there are other projects in the queue before the Napoleonics.

We're still waiting on more stock to arrive to complete the rest of the pledges. We've prioritised the orders where we could fulfill the entire buildings requirements, and then we've filled others as the stock comes in. There's currently a few in the pending stack where we've got 1 or 2 of the buildings ordered but it's not worth another package/postage to send just that one item. I can check on yours and send anything we've got if you like?

Hi Leon,
My first batch arrived at my old address in New York. If I am getting a second shipment could you please kindly ship it to my Indiana address? It was a pain to get it from NY.
Anybody started work on their consignments yet?
I finished up my buildings - meant to post a pic, will try that when at my desk (assuming I haven't put them somewhere safe...).

Apologies for the trouble there, we'd not had the new address sent through so the pledge still had the old address on it unfortunately. Is the new address the one in your website account? I'll get that transferred over to the Naps pledge for your second package, no worries.

I haven't done anything with my buildings yet but I have, almost, finished the British 1st Division for Talavera - two battalions of Guards, two of Foot and four of KGL Line. I don't normally post pics of my stuff unless there is a compelling reason - it always seem to be a bit like a 'mine is bigger than yours' contest (there are better sites for that kind of thing anyway, so I'm told). Perhaps I'm being a bit paranoid. Interested to hear how other people are getting on though.
Hi Leon,

Everyone should have received the latest update in their Inbox today, but I'll post it here as well:
Firstly I hope you're all well and enjoying a bit more gaming time now that the clubs and events are coming back.
I just wanted to let you know that the sculpting for the Peninsular ranges is complete and we're currently working through all of the Spanish production moulds, so by the end of this month we should everything in production and we'll be able to start sending out the final batch of pledges.
As we finally reach the end of this journey, there's just a couple of notes if possible:
- If your pledge list and address have not changed, you don't need to do anything. Your remaining items will be packaged and posted out to you very soon.
- If you want to change your pledge at all, or want to check what's due to come, let me know and I can confirm for you.
- The generic Confederation sculpts have been removed from the project temporarily and we'll return to those later in the year. Anyone who had these on their pledge will have the cost deducted from the balance payment due.
We will send a confirmation email out as the packages are posted, and any balance payments due won't be invoiced until you've received your goods.
And finally, the delays on this project were far more than we ever envisaged and I'm sorry it's taken so long to get everything out to you. This whole pandemic period has been a long and bumpy road for all of us so I'm glad that we can finally get this ticked off and long forward to some smoother sailing (perhaps!)
Good to hear the next (and final) batch of sculpts is being moulded up.

I mean, I don't need another project, but is this on course for end of April, beginning of May release? I'm currently fascinated by all things Spanish and have been captivated by DBN, for which these would be ideal. Also, rather than buying buidlings for my SCW project from eBay, if Pendraken have a load coming, I'll wait for these.

Mine arrived last weekend IIRC and had a quick glance at them and they are lovely sculpts. Now I just have to find my notes as to what I planned to do with them force wise!
The buildings I had way back when were lovely. I meant to get a pic but have utterly forgotten and packed them up...
Mine arrived this morning. They look really good, especially the garrochistas.
Postman found me in the back garden, which was good of him I thought - he didn't have to make the effort.
I suppose that should be 'postperson' in today's gender neutral madhouse (explain gender neutrality to the French and Germans).
On reflection. He was a bloke, so postman it is.
Nores found which is good, so now I need to start sorting them into the units I had planned, then see what 'extras' I might need :D .
Quoteexplain gender neutrality to the French and Germans
There are many reasons English is the lingua franca of our age rather than French or German and I'm sure one of those reasons is the absurdity of having to work out the gender of inanimate objects. There are enough problems agreeing the descriptions of the various points on the sliding scale of human genders without having to consider whether the sideboard is male, female or gender fluid :)
Not sure about that. I think the historical dominance of the British Empire and many countries that were former colonies where English the principal language, not to mention the rise of the United States as the pre-eminent global power, has much more to do with the use of English than its lack of gender sensitivity. Gender in their respective languages does not seem to be much of an issue for little French, Spanish or German children and, coincidentally, Ewan Davis raised this the other day with a French journalist when discussing the appointment by Macron of a female prime minister. The French journalist, clearly, thought his question was absurd.

Some truth, but there are things in English that are really tangled and show the signs of how it just congealed, rather than being designed. For a test of how far you actually understand it, try to summarise the rules of where an adverb sounds right in an English sentence (succeed and you'll qualify for a Cambridge fellowship in linguistics). The things we grew up doing, and generally get more or less right without thinking, are a long delirium for students, and scare the sporrans off first-language speakers when they find they have to explain why it's "When the doctor arrived the patient had died", not "died" or "had been dying", or "was dying", or the difference between the ways we indicate the future. It all makes English a marvellously subtle and expressive language with an unmatched literature, but life would have been much easier if German had become the world language instead.
Clive and Wolfe did it, in other words.
Quote from: FierceKitty on 21 May 2022, 12:41:47 AMIt all makes English a marvellously subtle and expressive language with an unmatched literature, but life would have been much easier if German had become the world language instead.
I agree that English is a marvellously subtle and expressive language, the most expressive in the world, I would say. It is also, certainly, a dynamic language, insofar as it adopts happily many foreign words and expressions, and it has changed significantly over time – read anything written even as recently as the 17th Century (Pepys for example). But I object to unnecessary change. We have few gender sensitive nouns in English, but what exist are what they are, and the attempt to de-gender the language in order to appease the obligatory sensitivities of the feminist lobby, is as absurd as it is gratuitous. So, easier had German become the world language? Four definite and three indefinite articles and case sensitivity - not so sure about that. At least in French the endings of nouns give a clue to their gender, sometimes. But, had it done so, I suspect we would get it more or less right without thinking, as do the Germans.

She's right.
I'm with you that not all change is healthy growth. And mindless wokery-pokery is in dire need of a bit of common sense by now, and serves only to discredit the legitimate features of its own agenda. But German genders are a piece of cake, really. It's the way a sentence can go on over half a page that is the weakness of that lingo!

They are, once you get used to it. So are French. But, I learnt Latin for my O-levels. Although I dropped it for A-Level, it certainly helped when it came to French and, 20 years later, when the army decided I needed to learn German, although not a romance language, I reckon it didn't hurt then either. But, what is English if it isn't a variety of plattdeutsch anyway ;)

>> It is the mongrel tongue...
I'm not a linguist by any means but expect every language takes something from others so 'Mongrel tongue' is quite normal.

Definitely a number of other contenders here as well. Spanish Empire ? Roman Empire ?
Phil
True, Glorfindel but while the Romans undoubtedly incorporated some words from other languages into Latin (I don't know enough about Spanish to comment) it did not seem to change as much as English. In addition to the incorporation of the Germanic and French influences, courtesy of our invaders and allies, "the empire upon which the sun never sets" allowed us to pillage vocabulary on a global scale. French purists may rail against "le weekend" but the English Language seems to hoover up new words with gay abandon!

Nonsense. I didn't elicit a response and posed no question, not even rhetorically. That was entirely your choice. I think you are just looking for trouble >:(
Most of the changes that differentiate English from modern German & Germanic languages actually came about between the time when Saxons etc. had a secure hold on most of Britain and the formation of a single kingdom. Many remnants remained in the language up until recent times and still do in dialects.
Long before the English went empire building the Saxons had a rich legacy of tales and songs, Chaucer showed that being civilised & christian hadn't stopped the English being creative and we'd produced one of the world's greatest playwrights just before our empire got started in a small way. There must be something about English (the language) or British (the people) that makes copying them attractive to others.

That's interesting considering the small range currently available from Warlord and the limited possibility for the lower volume units in plastic. With 10mm or 15mm you've got multiple manufacturers, comperehensive ranges, etc. that I would have thought would be more appealing.

I've received my final batch of Spanish Buildings - which is cool.
A question about the church - is the tower meant to attach to the main building in a specific place? I can't see an obvious join point, and all sides of the main building have windows, as does the tower. And I can't spot an orientation or location which doesn't leave half a window showing on one of the other. Any hints appreciated.

I can't see an obvious join point, and all sides of the main building have windows, as does the tower. And I can't spot an orientation or location which doesn't leave half a window showing on one of the other. Any hints appreciated.
I thought that as well

Good to hear that they've arrived safely.
The Church is an interesting design by John, he's made it so that it can be used as two standalone pieces, or so that you can combine them together. All that's needed is to decide which side you'd like the tower to sit (usually to the front end near the main doors) and then lightly sand flat the roof tiles and lower wall section of the main church piece. Just enough for the width of the tower to sit flush against the wall. Glue in place and away you go.
Thanks Leon. I had wondered if it was meant to be two separate pieces.
I hadn't thought of positioning the tower on the front of one of the side walls - I'll have a play around and see what I like the look of. Then as you say its just a small trim back of the overhanging roof, to get things flush - and perhaps a fill of one of the tower windows.

Once we release them properly we'll have some pics on the website for positioning the pieces, so that'll help. It's supposed to be a more rural style, like these ones:

Thanks. Looks very similar to the first one.
I'd not thought of a stone finish - was thinking more white wash

The white wash was too expensive. Even at the time of the Civil War, as I understand it, white washed buildings in rural Spain were the exception rather than the rule.
Good to know. I was thinking very much the typical red roof, white walls. Will do a bit more research
I have just posted links to a couple of good web pages for painting Spanish buildings in the Painting section
Is photograph number three Spanish?
Number 3 is St Cecilia's church in Molló, Catalonia.

Just received mine this morning. Having had a good look at it, it seem clear that the tower is a campanario, a separate bell tower not attached to the church. Campanarios are common in Spain, and Italy where they are called campanili. A separate bell-tower in other words, for which no modification is necessary.
Altogether a really nice set of buildings, including a walled cemetery and lovely little windmill, which will make a perfect Spanish hill village I think.
My thanks to the providers of the guides and pics. My "village in a box" also arrived this morning. So now I have a masonry pile as well. :D
Mine arrived too - they are really nice. I am looking forward to using them for Peninsular War and Spanish Civil War. One day the buildings may teleport to Italy to be fought over as well.

Good to hear that folks' packages are arriving. It's been a hell of a long project but it's nice to have it done now!

Mine arrived just before we went on hols, I must slip them in quick :D
Good looking models, but I'm vacillating over keeping the bell tower separate or doing as Leon says and sanding down a side for it to sit against.
Leon,
I know you felt bad about the time the Peninsular not-kickstarter took to deliver.
It may not make you feel any better about that .... but, for comparison, I have just taken delivery of the final part of the Cortex Prime Kickstarter that I first backed on the 25th May 2017!!
Your Peninsular delivery was lightning fast :D :D :D

2017?! I couldn't cope with having people's money for that long so I'd have refunded it all by now.
Bet you would have kept the interest though :d
I've had a number of KS projects that have taken 2-3 years to fulfil. Where they keep you informed it's generally not a problem, although sometimes I have lost interest in the project by the time the figures have arrived (Reaper Bones 3 was an example of this).

At the rates over the last couple of years, it wouldn't have been much...

There's no interest on a negative balance...

no real (post inflation) interest on a positive one either. :D
