Trews in The Book of Kells?

A certain class of Dark Age Irish warriors wear trews, some to below the knee and some ankle length with a strap under the instep. I have found three illuminations in The Book of Kells of men wearing trews:

Dark Age Irish:

Take 1 bottle Guinness, 1/3 bottle Irish Whiskey (Bushmill's Black for preference). 

Pour into a pint glass and fill to the top with potcheen.

Drink down in one.

The temporary blindness is called "Dark Age Irish".

Really interesting finds....But I'm glad Ian H had already interpreted them.
I'd have seen the last figure with tattooed legs rather than trews.

As ever with  such sources I think there's a GREAT deal of assumption necessary to reach the conclusion that these are 'trews'.  So-called 'Celtic'art appears to be highly decorative and symbolic.  I'd say, at best, you could say 'some srt of legging'.

I hear that that an ITV announcer got annoyed about this

When about to go he wanted his 10 o'clock trews but the wardrobe assistant brought the wrong ones and he was heard to shout

" You've brought the wrong ones these are too silly looking, I want the 10 o'clock trews Not the nine o'clock trews"
