Army Packs.

Whilst looking over on our smaller friends website(Baccus). I read with interest they've now stopped the 1000pt Warmaster army packs (among others) which I think is probably a good idea as even though its a great system it is now obsolete for the new gamer, and with even more interest I see they've thrown their lot in with 'Warlord' and started supporting 'Hail Caesar' rules by selling army packs for that rules set and getting Rick Priestly to put the list for the army packs together and some snazzy looking packing as well. its a great game and IMHO a smart move. My question is will Pedraken be stopping the WMA army packs and moving on to something else?

Interesting move, but one that makes sense. I would have thought though that there wouldn't be too much difference between an army for WMA and Hail Caesar?

True.on the Baccus forum Peter said after much discussion and correspondence they gone which Rick Priestly suggestion of unit size standard 3stands@40×20 (as WM) and 2 stands@ 40x50 for small units so army make up no too different. But the list for HC if you use them are better (imho)

Surely a generic / basic army pack is a better option if you don't use or even want to use those rules? Why not just say to the customer you will make a saving of 'x' amount if you buy an amypack which will cost you £'Y'. This is our range in that army, plus useful packs from other ranges. You can have any combination of 'z' number of packs...off you go.

This obsession with Army Lists and Points Values really does my fruit! I can understand the concept behind them but that doesn't make them the period bible (unless some rule writer has been deified while I write and I missed it). They are good for competition games and for two or more people wanting a game using rules they all know but as I have gotten older I cannot get my head around the idea of something like Egyptians facing Byzantines. I think this is one of the reasons why I collect both sides now. Back in the days before WRG, wargamers used to research armies and justify troop inclusion rather than take the lazy option and let someone else do all the interesting work for them and of course, putting their slant on things. To my mind half the interest of the hobby is the researching of the army / period.

That's the joy of HC you don't need the Amy list it was designed to be played with any type or size of army put together by the players, the inclusion of the lists books came later prompted by gamers and not Rick Priestly.I like both ideas for different reasons:-)

We have looked at whether it's worth keeping the WM armies on the website, as they don't sell very often any more.  At the moment though, there isn't an alternative to replace them with, so we've left them for the time being.

I'm not so sure Warmaster is obsolete. Just because the Evil Empire has pulled the plug doesn't mean it's not possible to put armies together and get hold of copies of the rules.

They don't even need to be labeled as 1000pt WM army packs or whatever, the ones I've bought have all been fairly well balanced and given me the vast majority of what I wanted.

Just find a replacement name for them. "Starter Army" is an oft used term across the industry for example.
