As far as I know the only English source for the new Russian uniform info is the Acedia book on the army. This is expensive but probably the best around.

What is this book? I can't find any trace of it on Google.

The book is The Great Northern War 1700 - 1721, II.
Swedens allies and enemies. Colours and uniforms.
By Lars-Eric Höglund, Åke Sallnäs and Alexander Vespalov.

See http://www.acedia.se/engbok.htm

Baccus used to stock them but doesn't seem to now. I don't know who has them now but I have seen them around at shows. From the Baccus site -

QuoteThis new book continues the superb standard set by the authors' previous work on the Swedish army of the Great Northern War. The coverage starts with the the Danish, Norwegian and Holstein-Gottorp armies covering regimental histories, uniform details and those all-important flags. There are over 65 colour illustrations of flags in this section alone.

The next section gives the most comprehensive description availiable in English of the Russian army of the period. The research was done in collaboration with Russian correspondents and includes details of the Russian auxiliary corp serving with the Saxon army from 1704 to 1706 and the Russian army in Finland. The text is well supported by a large number of full colour illustration of uniforms and flags, including a large number of Steltsi colours.

The next subject is the Saxon army Augustus the Strong. Once again all the information required by the wargamer and uniformoligist is presented in a clear an accessible format supported by superb full colour illustrations.

The book is completed by a study of the Prussian and Hanoverian forces that participated in the campaigns of the final years war.

Packed full of detailed information, beautifully illustrated and providing information that has not been available in English prior to publication, this is a fitting companion volume to the work on the Swedish army, and is a 'must have' for all those interested in the Great Northern War.

The Swedish one is state of the art, the best you are every going to get. The Russian, and others one, is not as good but is the best on the Russians so far. But the Russians are still finding more stuff, again mainly extra detail to what we know but I think sometimes correcting old ideas. I believe that the Russians are working on an new book, in Russian, but they have been doing that for 5 or so years already so when it will appear is any ones guess - and of course it will take a while to be translated into English :(

Probably worth going to Acedia Press directly
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Thanks for that, Hwiccee. Looks interesting. Think I'll have a sniff around at Salute and if that doesn't throw up anything I'll try the publishers direct.  :)

Hey Guys

I sent Peter Berry a message asking about the availability of  the book this is his response

I am sorry but I can't really give you an answer.  I don't know if Acedia are selling direct to customers yet.

I found the books too expensive and too slow selling to stock.   I did try to suggest moving to pdf format as with the WSS material I carry, but the publishers weren't interested.

Did you know that "acedia" in English means "sloth" or "torpor" - one of the seven deadly sins.  ;)

Hertsblue: Good luck with the hunt. I guess it might be worth trying Ebay and similar as well.

sloth/torpor  ;D

Fenton: I would guess the main problem was the price. These books seem to be around 400 Swedish Krona in Sweden, which is circa £37. I think mine cost circa £50 in the UK and I would guess it will be somewhere in between for a direct order.
