Undercoat - usually black
Green Paint
When dry, "paint" with watered down PVA glue and dredge with IKEA green florists sand
When that's dry, highlight yellow.
Varnish

I cut mine from vinyl floor tiles, as they are so thin.
Green paper on the sticky side
PVA with a dollop of cheap green (the big art bottles from The Works) on the base
drop of superglue on the figure base
Sprinkle a little static in 2 or 3 points, flock the rest
Leave 24 hours
Spray varnish to protect figures AND flock.

2mm sheet styrene - the big sheets from the plastic suppliers are really cheap and are easy to cut to required size
paint mid green
magnetic vinyl on bottom to secure in trays for transport (also raises stand off table a little to make it easier to pick up)

I used to glue figures on and flock and still will for 6mm

For 10mm using a version of a method suggested on this forum
mix 4 parts filla (the sort you fix holes in the wall), 3-4 parts PVA glue, 2 parts mid green paint (as used above)
spread over base, not too smoothly so you get an undulating effect
place figures on base into mixture [make sure it is not too 'wet' if basing infantry, if it is immediately rinse figure that falls over under running water ]
sprinkle with patches of earth flock
dredge with 'green' blend flock
allow to dry for 24 hours
add some tall grass and shrubbery
Spray with matt varnish to protect figures and flock

also pick colours for paint & flock that are lighter than you think you want

In 10mm I use the Baccus system with the addition of extra grass tufts, grit and woodland scenics foliage.

I do other stuff with milliputt, but life's too short!

mdf base
pva glue
a sand, and the odd stone or two
then a few drops of thin superglue (I sometimes use the thicker superglue if I want shell holes)
when it's dry, a wash of watered down Vallejo Iraqi sand, then while it is still wet newton and windsor peat brown ink.
A spray of varnish.
Then dab on some spots of pva and add static grass
