Neither line in Tarleton nor line in forage cap are an issue for 1796 - 1797 - most infantry did wear the hat, light infantry including.

The forage cap was worn only sporadically and the Tarleton or casque was fading out.

The casque would be nice for 1792 to 1794 though - but not essential for the Italian campaign

The Rovatti collection (showing French in Italy) give all light infantry hats.

In my view the mirliton and or shako comes up later - more likley for the second Italian campaign.

Bicornes were worn for and aft, othterwise you cannot shoulder the musket.

For the cavalry I would like to see standard bearers as well.

Hi von Winterfeldt
I agee with most of your comments however the varity would be so that the range can capture both earlier and even all the way up to 1806, the only real issue for the French is lenght of coat but not really an issue in 10mm. This should all be easily done with head swaps during the modeling phase. So make the masters with out heads, make heads separtly and then put together to make a huge varity of head gear to capture the really varied look of the Early French.

Bicornes where worn mostly for and aft as you say but there are numerous illustrations of the bicorn side to side and yes you can shoulder the musket with it that way. But again this would allow a varity of figs to give the French that truly ragged look.

If you are refering to the Casque for the Austrians then yes that is what they used for the most part the helmet not coming into use until I think 1799-1800. Again this allows the Austrians to cover the 1792-96 period allowing the range to cover all of the early period.

The Mirltion and shako where used by light infantry during the 1796-97 period but again this would allow the range to cover more of the light infantry for the latter period.

Not so sure on the standard bears for the cav as I feel that it was the same as the light infantry in that they would usually did not carry them into the field, but sure why not.

As to the forge cap yes it was worn but as you say not a lot but again allows more varity of the range for that truly ragged French Look.

As for bicornes for and aft - in contrast to side to side - I feel most illustrators and also sculptors cheat, they put on the hat first and then manage to get the musket behind it.

However the musket had to be shouldered - brought into positions of loading sequences and so on and you would just flip off your hat.

For fun - I converted a Perrys 1815 fusilier into a Rpublican one.

as for standard bearers - I am not sure for the Revolution, there wasn't Napoleon's paranoia to loose eagles.
But you might be right for light cavalry on the French side - there also the French light Infantry did not carry colours in the 1796 / 97 campaign.

For the line cavalry and dragoons however standards should be carried

in case I refer to the casque i mean the Tarleton, for the Austrians the Kasket was the usual general headgear in 1796 / 97

Love those conversions. Can you now reduce those down to 10mm ;)

I can see that you too are an enthusiast for the Rev wars. I think there is a vast amount of intresting combats on both sides of the Alpes in 1796-97 and this range will open those up to us.

Thanks for the Support

If the Range gets going I have made pdfs with paintings and illustrations of all the unifrom details including things like all the French Head gear, poses etc. Just let me know.
William

von Winterfeldt

I agree - nicer uniforms, better generals, more interesting combats than in 1804 - 1815  ;)

For me it was the real equality between the forces, the French dominate in Italy but that is Nappy but in Germany there is an ebb and flow to the wins and loses. After the camp of Boulgne no one can really stop the French until the attrition of combat catches up to them 1809!
William

von Winterfeldt

The French did not dominate Italy  ;) - in 1799 they had a hard stand - of course Bonaparte was elsewhere.

The scope of a Revolutionary range is almost endless, from the Pyrenees to Egypt, from the plains in Italy the the High Alps of 1799 (Lecourbe), good armies - good commanders - nice uniforms - very interesting campaigns.

Quick question, where have the code numbers come from for all those options?
www.pendraken.co.uk - Now home to over 7000 products, including 4500 items for 10mm wargaming, plus MDF bases, Battlescale buildings, I-94 decals, Litko Gaming Aids, Militia Miniatures, Raiden Miniatures 1/285th aircraft, Red Vectors MDF products, Vallejo paints and much, much more!

CATenWolde

The code numbers are from the lists I drew up, largely for talks with Dave and then Gareth over the years. So don't worry that they refer to anything like other ranges, etc. - they are just my way of organizing things so we had a common point of reference. The list William posted is probably the most comprehensive of the versions. As vW noted, the lists can be considerably focused by temporarily leaving out "earlier" and "later" French uniform variants and looking at the number of poses, and concentrating on getting a workable range for the 1796/97 campaign as a starting point and then adding on the other extras.

Gareth probably still has all my notes from our various conversations, but if you have any organizational questions feel free to ask.

Cheers,

Christopher

Ah, I was just curious as the codes were out of sync.  Fair enough, I prefer to work in codes myself, I find it easier to weight up the size of potential ranges that way.
