Will that rail gun be metal or resin? How big is the beast!

Dave wants to do it in metal I think, I'll have to measure it again, but I think it's somewhere around 12cm long?

And will it fit "N" gauge track?

Not sure on that one, but it should be pretty close.  Martin might be able to confirm if he sees this.

The gun crews look great, and I can see that I will need some Uhlans - their helmet has always been iconic (though why I need more horses to painted on top of hundreds of Mongols...)

The railway gun looks BIG - hard to see the detail on those photos though.

Yeah, I don't know why it's appearing grainy, the original on Flickr looks fine.  I'll try it again and see if it works this time:

EDIT: Nope, it's not having it.  If you click the pic above, it'll take you to the Flickr page where you can see if in all it's crystal clarity!

I'd love to have one of those guns as an objective in Chain Of Command - but to be truly fun it would have to fit N gauge track (or, better yet, take N gauge bogies).

Cool, the linked photo is much better.

Glad you all like the Railway Gun

The Barrel is 4 and a Quarter inches long as for the bogies ??? I just remodel the ones Dave sent me but you could easily fit N gauge bogies

I can see that railgun now with Aussie Light Horse in hot pursuit.

... which does lead one to wonder what associated support vehicles etc would one find with a rail gun?

Filched from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_gun

World War II

Main articles: Schwerer Gustav and Cross-Channel guns in the Second World War

The Second World War saw the final use of the railway gun, with the massive 80 cm (31 in) Schwerer Gustav gun, the largest artillery piece to be used in combat, deployed by Germany. The rise of the aeroplane effectively ended the usefulness of the railway gun. Similar to battleships, they were massive, expensive, and, in the correct conditions, easily destroyed from the air.

Both Germany and Great Britain employed railway-mounted guns that were capable of firing across the English Channel between the areas around Dover and Calais. Germany employed a number of 40 cm guns. Britain employed three 13.5-inch (342.9 mm) railway mounted guns on the East Kent Light Railway, located around Lydden and Shepherdswell. These were known as Gladiator, Sceneshifter and Peacemaker. 9.2 inch Mark 13 guns were located near Canterbury and Hythe, Kent; and 12 inch howitzers, Mk 3 and 5, located around Guston, north of Dover on the Southern Railway line to Deal and Ramsgate.

The 18 inch Howitzer, Boche Buster, featured here, was sited on the Elham Valley Railway, between Bridge, Kent, and Lyminge, and was intended for coastal defence against invasion. It was not capable of cross-channel firing, having a maximum range of only 20 km (12 miles).

So, German raid on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway anyone? During World War II, a miniature armoured train was used on the line to patrol the coast in case of invasion. The train was armed with a Boys anti-tank rifle and Lewis guns. Since the railway operates 1/3rd scale rolling stock I reckon a 3mm scale armoured train should about do it in 10mm scale :)

Put me down for a rail gun. Well, who needs shoes anyway?...
