12th Century Illustrations

Another good find D.
But showing my almost complete historical ignorance ......the soldiers shown look my idea of Normans (?)
Seeing as this artist appears to have lived 600-700 years (I think) after the events portrayed, would he have been drawing on the look of soldiers around his own period ?
Or have I got the wrong end of the stick ?

Yes. That's almost a given for illustrations from the medieval period.

In the above, Gilbert Universalis is the author. The name of the work is not specified in the source (it may be the Glossa ordinaria), but works are often known by the name of the author.  Being manuscripts, later copies are made by a calligrapher(s) and illustrator(s). The original work may not even have been illustrated. Sometimes the illustrations may be based on earlier versions but often not.
Gilbert died in 1134 so only a little before the date of this copy. He was Bishop of London (so no connection with Austria).

You'd have to ask Techno about that, no? And he has to do them 10 times smaller!
