Aart, I'm used to casualty markers for various games, though usually we use tiddly-winks. However for BP I have on order 24 AWI dead men, which will be close enough.  I will use riderless horses for cavalry (either dismounted ACW cavalry, or the ones for artillery limbers) and a gun clipped in half for artillery, and/or a wheel so it looks buried in mud.  I can see the attraction of your system, but it sounds too fiddly for me!

My opponent is going for 4 x30mm bases - I went with the 'accurately scaled' version as it will improve (in my view) the look of march/road columns. When I come to do Napoleonics it will keep the attack columns - i think 60mm wide by only 40 deep may look odd (it may be accurate, but I feel 40 by 60 is more 'columny'!), though obviously I will have that option.

I made movement trays anyway, so it doesn't really matter how many bases I have, I use vinyl floor tiles for bases, and made the trays out of these, with thin strips as lips to keep the bases in place.  I flocked these lips, so they blend in with the base.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

I wasn't hinting - I'm still struggling to paint the cavalry before they arrive.
