1) Square Bashing v1 (we had a copy of v2, but only one of the four of us has read it).
2) 1914 BEF 2nd Division vs German 17th Division across three bridges at The Mons Canal.
3) Been 8 years, but yes.
4) No, but it's been a long long time since we did!



Two Brigades of British held the canal line, backed by a hmg battery and 9 batteries of artillery and one heavy battery. The Germans had 12 infantry units, a jaeger unit, five hmgs, 9 77mm batteries and 3 heavy howitzers, a unit of Uhlans and a unit of dragoons.

BEF held three bridges, the preliminary bombardment knocked out one British battery and two battalions of Brits, but was otherwise ineffective.
Against the clock, we waited three turns (6 minutes on random throws) using artillery to try and soften the Brits, but then in a vain 50/50 attempt we threw the cavalry brigade and Jaegers at the weaker central bridge, and surprisingly they won and forced a retreat.
We expanded the bridgehead, but instead of carrying on the assault my co-general tried to sneak through a gap in the line. Following this both flank bridges were taken, and the Brits fell back to their second line; but in the centre, 8 units could not move from the central woods onto the British back line because of artillery suppression.
In the end the score (after a recount) was Brits 28, Germans 24. A very narrow loss indeed, as the Brits had only 7 infantry stands, 1 hmg, six batteries out if nine and a heavy battery left!
The Germans suffered comparatively low losses, but just couldn't advance.

Great game, huge laugh, really tight and touch and go all the way through. Dice roll here or there for both sides and it would have changed the game completely!

Maurice again but this time, as the Duc d'Incebleundalle of the Principality of Hauteville, I was seen off by the Grossherzog von Vormbei (all bastardised north Merseyside place names). My right wing infantry attack fell foul of guard infantry whilst my left wing cavalry thrust hit an unreconnoitered marsh (a horrible card to have thrown at you at any point) losing 40% of its thrust. This time I was beaten by sunset. Again forgot to take my camera.

1) Three games of FogR today.
2) I used Later 30 Years War German 1635 theme) played against Later Swedish, Ethiopian, Dutch Colonial.
3) for my first ever three games, bizarrely, yes.
4) absolutely yes!

I even won a game!
Third game I took a maximum loss as one unit broke through four others, losing the general at the same time, knowing out nearly half my army in a turn! But learnt a huge amount, and really enjoyed it!

Last night played a game to mark the 75th anniversary of the battle of the River Plate

1) General Quarters I/II
2) Kriegsmarine v Royal Navy
3) Very comfortable with rules
4) No, played many times

Peter came up with an interesting "what if" scenario with Renown and Ark Royal being near enough to come to Harwoods assistance. To even things up Scharnhorst and Gneisenau had headed south after dealing with Rawalpindi. A small British convoy also blundered into the battle area.

In one corner the refight of River Plate was fought out with Graf Spee sunk by a combination of gun fire and torpedoes from Exeter and Achilles. Ajax was crippled and Exeter was not much better off. Achilles had escaped lightly.

In the other corner Renown supported by a Swordfish and a Skua strike from Ark Royal managed to cripple Scharnhorst while taking heavy damage. Gneisenau dodged the bombs of the one flight of Skuas that attacked her but was feeling lonely by the end of the game.

The convoy demonstrated why merchant ships should avoid enemy heavy ships. Both merchantmen were badly damaged by long range salvos from Scharnhorst and Gneisenau before their escorting cruiser and Renown's destroyers (after launching torpedo attacks on Scharnhorst) could get into position to lay smoke.

Prussians held off Austrians long enough to prepare bridge for demolition but things went very bad when Austrian reinforcements arrived on the field. Bridge was captured by the Austrians and then recaptured by the Prussians before Austrians could dismantle the charges. With many of their own units routing over the bridge with Austrian cavalry hard on their heels, the Prussians were forced to blow the bridge leaving too many Prussian units stranded on the wrong side of the river to claim victory #-o (shades of Lindenau bridge 50 years later!). As the Austrians also failed in their objective to capture and hold bridge, battle deemed a draw.  :-<

Although I also use Maurice and Black Powder for SYW, expect next game to be the above scenario using FoB again.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

2/ Noble Franco-Bavarians versus cheatin' Austrians
3/ Yessss - I picked a bad army choice for my half of the army (French - went cavalry heavy, Maison d'Roi special and then arrived late. My partner had tried the attack to turn the flank and gotten mown down as setting up second had let the Austrians effectively have a secure flank and our only option was steady regular infantry... It did not go well. He hung on long enough to hand over to me, I failed to get any useful cards or rally off disorders and then collapsed.  Our spoiling attack on the other flank hit marsh and a succession of excellent cards for the Austrians who mowed it down with impunity and we fled the field havin done them a total of one out of twenty four morale points to twenty five totally lost... My only useful action was to buy a turn playing an unmapped marsh in front of the Austrian infantry which forced them into column and then to redeploy to the front. Which they just did, because Eugene is bloody good!).

4/ Yes - although the umpire has played a couple!

I know 3/ sounds like a lot of carping, but it was actually quite good. I just put a terrible army together and then couldn't get useful enough cards in quickly enough to salvage anything! Will be giving them a another few bashes, I think as it felt very horse & musket :)

Not all aspects no. Most of the rules are easy to follow, making for a fast moving game. However the command system where differing commands can either fail to move any units at all or can possibly allow the enemy up to 6 moves whilst you remain inactive seems extreme and is unrealistically frustrating.
Yes, first game although have played Hail Caesar and found the same problem there too.

1: Mars Attacks! = OK, so it's not a full-blown miniatures game, but it's got minis & true line of sight...
2: Mars vs. Earth. A bit predictable, granted...
3: Fine with the basic rules (which we were using), checking the rulebook every now & then for extra rules to add in.
4: Only played a few FtF games, plus a few solo.

I have the Kickstart game, but with very few extras over the quite extravagant 'free' Stretch Goals. I'm still playing the first scenario, but boosting forces using the points values. Now assembling the Giant Robot...

A very very simple system, on a pretty small 2'x2' map with only 8x8 squares, but a load of scenery and placement of minis anywhere on a square stops it feeling like a chessboard. Glad I got extra scenery though, the set that came with the base game is a bit sparse. Once you add in  about 50% more walls, it starts to feel simultaneously too cramped and too open, which feels good for an urban skirmish!

If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Nope, only the postman at my front door this morning!
Perhaps I should have said, frustrating in games terms. However, as all the other players really seemed to like the rules, with even talk of a campaign, I shall no doubt be playing them again. But to sit and watch unable to re-act due to bad dice throwing (for which I am infamous) whilst the enemy seem to dance around you onto your flank and then charge you....!!!!
Maybe next game the luck will be with me.
