Hi all,

As some of you may know me and a friend are doing out own 10mm Dr Who inspired Skirmish game, including producing my own l models

My question is, what size bases are usual?

I know a 25mm base looks fine for a single model but a squad of 10mm models?

I imagine a unit of 10mils on 25mm base's would look like they were to spaced out on a battle field?

What do you think?

I'd put singles on 12.7mm counters, the teams base in pairs or fours, 2 figs for MG's and ATRL, 4's for rifles, smg. Team bases 10mm per figure and 20mm deep.

Thanks Ianrs,

You all know more about 10mm than me... When you say team are you taking like, heavy wep teams and such?

If so, sounds like a plan.

I don't want the squads on large bases, I like unit bases for regimental games but my guys defo needs separate bases.

So 12.5mm per man sounds good. Is that like a 5p coin?

Most board game counters are 12.7mm - so  use them.

Team = Fire Team - so 4-6 men today, with assault rifles and Squad Automatics. For the Falklands period you would do 1 SLR Team, 1 2man LMG/GPMG team and 1 Carl Gustav Team of two men. Think Unit was organised that way as well. You may want separate leaders in which case you can either make the Teams 3 and 4 men, with one leader, or for the eariler version, do it as 3 SLR, 1 Leader, 2 MG and 1 2 Charlie G.

For Dalecks - all individual

Cybermen - 3 or 4 Man bases with 1 leader...

REst - it's up to you and rules.

With ya!  8)

All men will be individual with a coherency for the squad. So all on the 12.7 bases sound good. Although I like Pendrakens bases and the smallest they do are 15mm. Are they too big?

Thanks

Frankly your choice. Our Real Sacry Monster use to say 5-10m between each man, work on that with your ground scale.  You do need to close up on that a little bit, as it looks too spread, but root around on some of the WWII and Falklands threads to see what people are doing.

REmember when it comes down to it it's your stuff, so do what you think is right.

Thanks man,

Ill have a look around. Mebs Leon can make his new machine cut smaller circular bases.

fred.

If you are going for individual bases for 10mm you are best using metal bases, to give enough weight to the bottom of the figure to keep them standing up easily. I had initially tried using plastic counters but they were too light and quite thick.

I got a bag of washers from eBay for around a £1 for at least 100, these were 12mm in diameter with a fairly small hole in the middle.

5p coins are a bit bigger than this, both in diameter and height, and are a lot more expensive.

I would think about doing some larger bases for squads of troops, it just makes moving units so much easier.

Squad wise, were only having around 50men per side, so that shouldn't be a problem. We defiantly want the models to be separate.

The scale is between 40k and the usual 10mm (yes I know it is 10mm but its not squad based, it is skirmish based) we defiantly defiantly want one man per base.

So the washer idea sounds good. If Leon can cut wood to that size would it be to light?

1) Defy us less. Nobody challenges your right to one figure on a base!
2) No, it wouldn't. After you'd lit it, it would burn away in no time.

Sent PM mate hope this helps. Initially i was going to go with the 5p but didnt like the ridges on the side. I  guess with Cybermen it might look good just leaving it silver and could stand out more. RE Falklands infantry, I eventually went with the 1p and 2p and thought they might look spaced out to much and then i came to the conclusion that with the artillery flying about and mines it looked okay. For the Argentinians i might go with pairs on a 2p as when it comes to occupying trenches i cant see it working with 1ps, but that brings me on to Brits occupying abandoned trenches :-\ Id say that with this scale you can do both swapping the 1ps for 2ps when they occupy a trench and vice versa for the Argentinians counter attacking :o. Sorry for the long post and speaking of another era but hopefully give you some ideas.

That helps mate thanks.

As you say, once you get into terrain it's nice to have them on individual bases.

The 5p should be a good size, although by my maths that's 5p each.... I think?

So the question is, the wooden ones of the same size, will they fall over?
