Sponsorship from companies for crowd funding

Ive been doing some reading on sponsorship and was thinking of sending some emails to potential big companies to sponsor my crowdfunding campaign, the advice seems to say you should contact companies with a similar area of chosen business (this would be the wargames/RPG/CCG etc types) or the ones with stuff in common (similar themes and all) to ask for backing in return for advertsing them in your stuff.
My plan is to get as many emails out to possible companies who might stump up some of the cost for the project (I reckon if I can get 50+,its gotta get me at least a couple of sponsors, if not just get a bit more word about)
Why Ive posted it here is has anyone got some suggestions of potentials that might be up for it? I am looking at some of the bigger RPG/wargames retailers, online and off, but there have gotta be more, or is there a chance that I might be able to get a unrelated company getting involved (like, for instance, as its pig related, would a bacon company be interested, or a big farm brand? Don't worry they are just examples!)

win what do the companies get out of it? (apart from advertising). what are they sponsoring you for?. i would have thought that most manufacturers have there own fan base & and those that dont have presence at wargames venues. the big companies usually sponsor gaming events like EE, warlord, mantic & BF. what could you do for them?

You get lots of people to fund your project, often by donation, used by lots of science projects.

Never knew it was called "crowdfunding". I can see why it would work for science projects and the like but not sure it will work with a commercial venture. It sounds like an attempt at funding something that most commercial  investors wouldnt touch with a barge pole because the returns are too small or too long term.

Cant see what there is in it for the sponsors to be honest.

I'm not sure whether you'd be able to get many companies involved purely on an advertising basis, but what I have seen from some of the other Kickstarter-type campaigns, is a store-pledge, where you would offer x number of sets of the final product for x value, designed for people to take for resale.  So, like your Deluxe level pledge, with 10 full sets for a discounted rate, plus some other goodies maybe.  That would be of more interest to companies I'd think, and something you could push to them.  You'd just need to find the right companies to push that to.

On the bacon companies, it's always worth a shot, but I don't know how much joy you'd get with it...
