"The Nafziger Collection contains orders of battle from 1600 to 1945 with over 7000 individual pdf files. It began with the author's interest in Napoleonic Wars, and steadily grew to other areas because of the gaming public's interest in these highly detailed historical orders of battle. Sources range from published works to actual archival documents, which represent the largest single source. Nearly all orders of battle break down to the regimental level. The availability of strength figures and artillery equipment varies from period to period.

This collection was provided through the generous donation of George Nafziger to the Combined Arms Research Library."

Top-notch.

Excellent resource Niik. I've heard of this collection many times but have never had the chance to read any of it before. Thanks

Rob

Nik is correct in everyting he says here. George Nafziger used to sell these OOBs but on his retirement he decided to contribute the whole collection for free.

I will add this link:
http://www.cgsc.edu/carl/nafziger/

It is for the same source of data but lays out the OOBs by century, and if you look at the codes you can often get a clue to what they contain. I just find it easier to browse using this method.

If you cannot find what you need there as a back up I use:

Cheers, Rob  :)

It look's like the free Nafziger OOBs have been chopped. Not sure whether this is permanent or not.

You can download any you want to your hard-disk from here: http://www.alternatewars.com/CARL/Nafgizer_CARL.htm

Nice man that Mr Nafziger

Cheers, Rob  :)

Nope, they've just moved. A simple search for Nafziger on the original linked site takes you here

Gavin,

Have you managed to actually search anything out though? As I can't!

GavinP

Ah, I see what you mean.

A bit of tweaking of the URL, here is the link to the index of all his Orbats, no searching needed. ;D

Be aware, however, that some of the Orbats, particularly for the earlier periods, actually contradict each other. The Marlburian ones in particular need careful sifting and comparison to get a correct listing. There are also several interesting typos in some of them. Hardly surprising in 7000 plus documents, I suppose.

This is where you can go to download OoBs from the huge Nafziger Collection 1640 to 1945. Be warned though, the Napoleonic section alone amounts to 107MB and contains over 800 files. Each historical section comes down complete as PDF files in zip form.

Good stuff. I downloaded the PDFs for the Napoleonic period but found all the titling of the files (except for the year) somewhat vague. Guess I'll just slowly work through them renaming as I go  :-\

Yes, it's bit of a task. The first three figures of the code is the year, which narrows things down a bit. Haven't sorted out the rest of the codes yet but I'm sure there's a logic there somewhere.
