Hi,
I thought id best make this a fresh post as opposed to adding to my ECW project post. As the title says at last my ECW project (part one) is now completed, thanks for all the encouragement over the previous posts, its been quiet a different army from my normal period preferences. Ive taken some fresh photos and posted the complete army on my Blog for those who want a toot. hope you like :)

Hmm, basing is a bit of an issue in P&S. Bishop Lord's musket wings should be 6cm or maybe 8cm wide to reflect the 1:2 ratio of pike to shot that was customary in the ECW (and is indeed suggested in the P&S rules). But with shot units of 8cm width the "hedgehog" would look a bit funny, wouldn't it? More complex formations such as the Swedish Brigade are even harder to emulate in this basing system. But with a bit of tweaking and lots of try-outs I think we'll get there in the end. Apart from that, I totally agree that the painting and basing technique of Bishop Lord is superb!

Cheers,
Aart

The club where I play decided to do ECW as a side project so initially we went for a Warmaster variant with relatively small armies as it wasn't a main project just something to game every now and then. So we used 120mm frontage 3 stands with a Pike center with two wings of Musket and cav 60mm wide. When we went for Pike and shot we stayed with the same armies and frontages all be it with pike and shot separate units.

We have played a few games now using this basing system and have had fantastic games the base size for P&S are indeed surgestions but they also say you can play the rules any way you like and this is how we like.

@Aart  what basing system did you use in your games and how do you find it?

Hello Jason,

your approach sounds reasonable, practical as well as fun, so why change a winning format? Your stuff looks gorgeous as well as consistent.

It's just that I've waited for P&S to come out because I was dissatisfied with most every rule on the market. None seemed to reflect my favourite TYW period. Now that P&S is here,it turns out that it's very hard to make various formations with the P&S basing system, such as the Swedish Brigade.

But me and my mate have both ordered a shedload of Pendraken ECW and TYW models and we're trying to figure it out right now. We're probably going to go with 3x3cm pike bases with 12 models on them and 3x2cm shot bases with 8 models each. A standard unit would then be one pike bloc plus two shot bases for each wing. For a large unit, you can add one pike bloc behind the first one and add a shot base at each end of the wings. That way you can form columns that don't look out of whack and you can still make acceptable hedgehogs against a charge (as per page 65).

Pics will be coming soon. But I wish I could borrow your talent, mate.

Cheers,
Aart
