AWI Rules.

Ok folks,
Now i am embarking on two new periods, WSS, as per my previous thread about BLB2 and AWI. So the question is which is the best rules, it seems to be a toss up between Blackpowder or British Grenadier. So what do all prefer?

I'm using Washington's Army by Peter Pig, load more period flavour than Black Powder, dunno about the other one.

Not seen the WA rules, look interesting. What are they like to play?

Personally I use, "They Couldn't Hit an Elephant", which are actually for ACW but I modified it for AWI. Of the two you listed though, British Grenadier probably has more period flavor than Black Powder.

For RoT, WA plays a bit like Warmaster, a general (lets call him average, quality 2) attempts to activate an average unit (quality 2) 7 inches away, thats 2 for the general, 2 for the unit and 2 full lots of 3 inches of distance, grand total of 6. He needs to roll 6 or more on 2 d6, if he manages the unit then rolls a single d6 and that the number of actions that unit can do that turn, some actions take more 'pips' than others move 3 inches, one pip, fire takes 2, etc etc. That general can then move onto the next unit under his command until he fails the activation roll or runs out of units. Then its onto your next general.

Unlike Warmaster, however low command values are good, generals go from quality 0 (absolutely bloody marvellous) to 3 (bungling oaf, couldnt run a piss up......), troops go from 1 Veterans to 3 Raw, its failry simple, I've played the ACW set most (Civil War Battles) and they give a good game often with historical results on a club night. Table size 5 ft x 3ft, about a couple of hundred figures a side, books come with all the lists you'll need and usually about a dozen historical scenarios in them, prices vary, but theyre not expensive, usually about the £15 mark.

BG is probably the best set of rules for period flavour. Black Powder is more accessible though and i think gives a quicker game - but also a lot more generic. The good news is that you can use the same basing for both (although BG tends to use smaller units)

Take a look at Brent Oman's 'Field of Battle ' 2nd edition (FOB 2). As a core rule set I think they are hard to beat, period tweaks required, but excellent all the same.
