how the swordsmen look as a regiment, based of pennies

Its a little hard to see details in the photo.

Have you undercoated the figures before painting? For armoured figures I like a black undercoat, which then allows a dry brush of silver to paint the armour, while leaving black shadows to create contrast.

Personally I find pennies (whether cents or pence) a bit big for single 10mm figs - I have used 12mm washers for my single based figures. Coat the tops of the bases in some PVA glue (white glue) and sprinkle some sand on, this helps blend in the cast bases.

The good bit is that they look like a unit though.

Keep going.

I undercoated them a light grey. at least they look like a unit. what I did is first I coated them the light grey, than I painted their pants and arms red, then attempted rather sloppily to make their hands and faces a skin color. I painted them all in assembly line fashion like this, which is why they look like a unit. I will look into 12mm washers.

Ah, light grey under coat will look like bare metal in the photos. Using grey undercoat will give you much brighter colours than black.  Try a wash of black over the armour to give some more depth to it. If you want an easy wash then buy the GW ones but you can mix up one fairly easily.

yes. I am googling how to make various colers differant shades as I paint. me and my little sisters (8 and ten, they are so precious) are learning togather, and I think they are showing more talent than I (and they are speeding up the process wonderfully)
