Understanding Assets

Somebody is going to tell me this has already been answered but here we go.
Regarding assets, I understand from other Q&A's the "Munitions: HE, SMOKE" etc and the costs in the Assets table but where I'm a little confused is where an artillery unit (in this case the SP-Rocket Launcher M270 from the Bundeswehr list) has ICM and PGM listed but the table has a - against those which I take to mean it's not available?
Thanks in advance.

Dunno about the rules but in real life the M270 MLRS has only ICM in West German service, and it only appeared in service just after the end of the Cold War in 1991.
From 1994 it received the AT-2 ADAMS (the anti-tank mine cluster munition).
From 2012 it received HE rockets, with the last ICM destroyed by 2017.
In theory it could fire the US ATACMS PGM but as far as is known it never happened.

If an Artillery, Mortar or Air unit is listed with a specific type of ammunition in the main list, the ability to buy that ammunition type should be shown in the assets table, along with the number of rounds of fire available and the cost (per round). If there is a - shown in such a circumstance it is probably an error. There should be a number shown and a points cost. I'll take a look and check. With the Bunesweher list for now I'd just use the points cost and availability for the on-line US list until we publish an errata.

Related to this I've been re-reading p17 regarding scheduled strikes following a recent game.
My understanding is that if (for example) the HE artillery asset is shown as 4 then one gun can fire 4 lots of planned HE over the course of the game. If you have a second gun it also can fire 4 lots of HE and so on provided you pay for the guns and the assets. Simple.
Where I've lost the plot is commanded fire via the FAO. My initial understanding was that you pay for the gun(s) but the HE asset is free (other stuff you pay for)and there is no limitation but reading a different forum post I came away thinking the number (4) is the limit across the total number of guns you have rather than per gun?
The answer will of course be simple....

fred.

We've never played that assets are required when you call in off table artillery with a FAO/FOO

HE Assets are provided as being integral to an off-table artillery unit, when it is being ordered by an FAO.
Other Assets must be purchased and come out of the Asset limitation for the army.
So ... for example.

  • If an army has only 4 HE Assets available to be purchased - only these 4 can only be used for Scheduled Strikes.
  • The same Army also has 4 Smoke Assets available to purchase - these 4 can be used either for 4 Scheduled Strikes, or can be fired (once) by 4 individual off-table artillery units, commanded by an FAO or 1 individual off-table artillery unit can fire Smoke in 4 separate game turns*.
  • If the army has on-table artillery units that can also fire Smoke, Smoke assets must be bought for those units (that can fire Smoke) and these rounds come out of the armies asset allocation.
  • All off & on-table artillery units in the army can fire HE, in any number of game turns, if commanded by an FAO.
  • *NB: if an FAO ordering an off-table artillery unit fails a command roll (or blunders), when ordering an artillery unit to fire using special asset ammunition, that round of ammunition is not lost/used. It is assumed that the order either failed to make it through to the artillery unit or is misinterpreted.

Not sure if that is a 'simple' answer but I hope it clarifies things.
