Line Density in ACW

How would you base 10mm ACW - how many men on what frontage?

The idea here is I rebase my ACW, and use in different rule sets.

I have up to now used Fire and Fury which is the useful(?) 1 and 1 eight inches by 7/8ths.  Not sure on the quality of the bases, which I think is 30 year old plasticard.

I'm looking at not just F&F, but Sharpe Practice, and possibly other rules - not sure what I have at home. So don't worry too much about rules, what generic basing would you use?

I did my ACW as 4 figures on a 30x30 base - quite an open order.

I was going to do the same with the Russo-Japanese War but have gone for 6 on a 30x20mm - quite a close order.

Why? Dunno. All the visuals on the Russo-Japanese suggested mass attacks, whereas the Yanks seemed to be a little more spaced out. I suppose it depends on which stage and theatre of the war.

I use 4 infantry on the Regimental Fire and Fury base size.  See my Batrep for Tunnel Hill for pictures.

I'm basing my later 19th century 10mm - ACW/FPW etc. - with 4 figures in a staggered line on a 25mm x 20mm base which can represent a 2 deep firing line or charging infantry.

All contemporay illustrations show sholder to sholder, so close order. My ACW are 6mm Baccus so most are in close order, 4 strips on a 40x 20.

All my 19th century stuff, 10mm or 15mm, is on 30x30 bases. My 10mm ACW is 5-6 figures per base.

Thanks for the replies. I'm now looking at 3 on a 25x20 base - Thinking about my 4 wide on 30mm for ECW, and 3 wide on 20mm for WSS, I think the 3 in 25mm will be best.

All my mid 19th century European armies are based on 25x20mm bases, four figures to a base for close order line, or two to a base for skirmishers. Prussians, French, Bavarians, Saxons, Wurttembergers, Austrians, Italians, all the same. Nigh on 20,000 figures in all.

Just dug them out to see how many I had.

Turns out I'd forgotten I'd already rebased a few years back! Completely forgot.

I've got them on 30mm square, 2 lines, 4 and 3. Just over 60 stands each, plus skirmishers and some Cavalry and guns!

I would probably base them identical to my Napoleonics, one part out of OCD, but one part I think it is the best compromise of all factors - looks, density, a base as a building block etc.  30x20 4x2.  If I started scratch I might do 3x2 to save on figs if that mattered to me.  It is personal opinion but I am just not a fan of single rank with lots of fore and or aft space.
