Joseph's Spanish Troops

Ah! The butterfly mind has flitted again, and alighted upon Joseph's Spanish Army in 1813.

I know the basic theoretical composition, and the OOB for Vittoria, but can anyone recommend a price-conscious reference for this army?

I have the Ospreys (which is a terrible condition seen commonly in Wargamers) but wonder if there's anything specifically about Joseph's troops?

Thank you in advance.

There's a very small amount at the back of Haythornthwaite's Uniforms of the Peninsula War 1807-1814 (Blandford).

Basically a few paragraphs detailing facing colours for infantry and cavalry. Of course, these were the uniform regulations and the uniforms, or indeed the units themselves, may not have actually existed.

Thank you. I have the Haythornthwaite, there's also an interesting picture of the 7th Lancers in the companion Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars.

You have put your thumb on the issue though - may not have actually existed. I've got an OOB of Joseph's army at Vittoria - here - which seems reasonably consistent across several sources.

Of the 7 line infantry regiments that may have been, only one - the 2nd Toledo - was at Vittoria. I have one source that suggests the 1st Madrid was also raised, but of the other five ...

Napoleon's War in Spain by Lachouque et al has a lovely illustration of various uniforms including the 3rd Line, but says little more on the matter.

Not sure what your definition of 'price-concious' is but El Ejercito Espanol de Jose Napoleon 1808-1813 is the book to have I think.  I no speaka da lingo I hear you say - neither do I but it isn't that hard to follow and it does give you chapter and verse.  Here's a link.  https://www.abebooks.co.uk/9788494649912/Ej%C3%A9rcito-espa%C3%B1ol-Jos%C3%A9-Napole%C3%B3n-1808-1813-8494649914/plp

Thank you. That's in the acceptable range.

I take your word for it that not being able to speak Spanish is not a bar. Actually, I work with someone who's a Spanish speaker, so I may have a way for the more difficult passages.

Thank you.
