The infantry had 2 3" mortars in the battaion for imediate fire support in 40-41. Later an infantry gun was designed, the 95mm on a 6pdr carriage suitably modified. Infantry reaction was - very nice can you give us the men to operate it. The 44 btn had added 4 3" mtrs and 4-8 6pdr from the 41 one. Of course by then tanks had larger general purpose guns.
