Any suggestions what to use to show that a WSS battalion has not yet fired?
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

Mark it as firing when it does, ie after first fire mark with cotton woll along the front.

I did consider that, but it means moving the cotton wool around with the units for the rest of the game

Dont think there is any way round that, the alternative is a marker with unit which is removed after it fires, easy to "forget" to take that off.

That's what I was looking for, we use micro dice at the moment  - Graham asked is Dave does men in Tricorne reloading, I'm wondering about officer waving a sword

I use a very small piece of cork. It looks scenic, sits on a base, and gets removed once a unit has fired.

Thanks for the link, but I've already seen Litko - They would look a bit 'plasticy' (I know they are plastic!).  Graham thinks I'm mad for painting 3 casualty markers per unit, individual to each unit, pity to spoil it with a bit of perspex!

We are now discussing not just the common mod of fire before movement in BP, but as it is WSS, giving a -1 to command for any unit that does fire (Initiative before firing). If we do this I will use cotton wool to show which units have fired that turn - which, while not the reason for the -1, is certainly a bonus for including it!

We use a fire then move variant and have just introduced a -1 to command for units that have fired. It works well. We also do not allow units that fire to then act on initiative. Cotton wool for units that have fired works a treat and can look good if you use the right stuff. I think toy stuffing looks better than actual cotton wool as it looks more like smoke.

You can buy really fat pipe cleaners quite cheaply here - http://www.bjcraftsupplies.com/generalCrafts/pipe-cleaners-01.asp
Get the white ones or the 'bumpy' white ones, cut, twist and drybrush sparingly with yellow/red for bit nearest gun/infantry and grey for smoke; can be lightly wedged into the stand (I have 2 ranks of 4 figs per stand) and moved with the stand. Looks more scenic than dice and easier that wool balls or pom-poms.
Don't buy your daughters a pony, buy them heroin instead, its cheaper and ultimately less addictive.
