10mm early WW1 Project

I'm embarking on a 10mm WW1 (early war, western front, Belgium/northern France) project and I'm looking for suggestion for appropriate buildings I can use to represent small villages - intact and in various stages of destruction!

The intention is to have the same village but for it to change as it is fought over and eventually destroyed. I'll be doing the same thing with other terrain features, such as woods and roads etc.

Also it looks like their general ruins and various buildings would work fine for your described scenarios.

Leven Miniatures worth a look as well. I find 6mm looks right as you can get more buildings into the same area so that it looks like a village, rather than a few houses. Hope that makes sense?

Leven Miniatures buildings require quite a bit of cleaning with all the bubbles in them.


Also, Ithoriel. Have you got any experience with the manufacturers you pointed out? Got me interested!

I have plenty of experience with Timecast, as I've known them since the 80s.
All theor sculpts are accurate to actual buildings floor plans, so may feel a little big compared to others, theor sculpts and quality are amazing. I would look carefully at their 1870 and Russian industrial ranges too.

The Hovels stuff I have is almost all 6mm. Reasonable little models at a reasonable price.

Total Battle are very nice models deliberately done on a restricted footprint to give a better density of buildings

Timecast - can't better Mad Lemmey's take on them.

Paper Terrain - never owned any myself but a friend had some 15mm stuff we used for Chain of Command. The ruins under the outer shell worked really well as did the ability to put troops inside.

Have to say I've rarely had a problem with bubbles in Leven stuff and gods know I have plenty of them

Thanks folks - all really helpful.

I have a lot of 6mm sci-fi buildings - various manufacturers - and use Z gauge railway buildings for my 6mm CWC games - as a lot are German they look right for a mid-'80s mid-european battlefield.

I do like the Hovels stuff - I have some of their greenhouse and allotment packs I have been meaning to paint up - I am sure they will find their way into this project.

Not sure about paper/cardboard buildings - again I have some Canadian ones (ordered mail-order) of various small fishing sheds and corrugated huts - again for Cold War in Scandinavia - they are nice, but I find they wear at the edges/corners over time.

All great food for thoughts. I bought a really nice painted early WW1 German (pendraken) army off eBay a while back and wanted to start using them. I was thinking of using Belgians as the opposition - with a small BEF support force. I'd alway liked the Belgians and also the early war period. (Hmmm ... I have some early WW1 in 15mm and also 20mm ... obsession ... maybe).
