Q: what on this helmet?

Rejoice, I did some work this evening even though I've been IRL working until 5 pm  ;)  I prepped my US Para's and I have a lot of them, prolly going to do only a part of them, I think 8 or so squads (that's 16 bases) of regular infantry will do, no need to have 20+ squads of one type.

There is a bag or something on the helmet of a lot of my US Para's - mainly the one without camo on their helmets.  The only thing I can find is a first aid bag.  Is that appropriate for late war US Paras?

I'm thinking about priming in FOW US Green and lightening up from that.  Is that a good idea you think?

I think it's a first aid kit / bandage.

I left them on for my Airborne for Market Garden, I also went for green uniforms.

I have an original somewhere it is  a cloth bag with a bandage,  morphine, sulphite powder and a torniquette. Generally the ones that i have seen were fastened to the ones with the netting on, as there was something to fasten it too. there were 4 ties to fasten it to wherever you liked, arm, leg helmet netting, where it went on the helmet was a matter of taste :D

I love how your bases look, just the right mix of earth and grass, nice foliage.  Very convincing!

Excellent info, Nik!   Really helps to have it spelled out and to have some fine samples so you know where you're headed.  I have based a few units and primed them, will be painting them tonight and tomorrow I hope.  I decided to base first and paint second, after simulating reaching all three figs with my brush on a 25x25 base without any problem.  If the test goes well, I'll be basing everything first and then priming in Army Green.  Once there's something to see I'll post some pics in the painting diary.

Pruneau - you need to be aware that there were two colours of uniform worn by US Paratroops.

The yellowy / khaki one worn in Scily and Normandy (and by 101st during Market Garden) as shown on Nik's figs  OR

The dark green one (M1943) worn from Sept 44 onwards (except 101st during OMG) as shown in mine and Dazza's figures.

In both cases helmets were olive green. And webbing a variety of khaki colours, from pale kakhi, to mid brown to a greenish brown.
