Whats happening at Baccus ?

My son moved house again ! And I have inherited a stock of 1/300 (6mm) buildings with a Middle Eastern theme.

I was thinking of an obscure game with British/Empire versus Iraq with Axis getting involved.  This is not original waffle, it is inspired by a very entertaining demo game by Deal Wargames Society (Adrian White, Ricky Blacklock et al) back in the early 2000's. Tim Wade at Frontline actually cast up Crossley armoured cars in the days before 3D printing !   (its all in Miniature Wargames No 265 May 2005, so it must be true).

You have the remote RAF airfield Habbaiya,  a neighbouring plateau where the Iraqis deployed, the nearby city of Fallija, a wopping great bridge and the Euphrates (a river ripe for a gunboat).

Looked for what's new in 6mm (I don't often go there) - and discovered that Baccus has moved into WW1 and WW2 era.

The images of the infantry look neat.  Would they be compatible with -say GHQ ?   Have they plans to add WW2 Italians to the range ?

Norm

They say their plans are very comprehensive and there will be British vehicles by mid year and German by end of year. They have a new news bulletin covering it on their web page. Specifically to Italians, it seems fair to assume that they will be some way off, though it is impossible to second guess their medium / long term plans, so it may well be worth asking Pete Berry himself.

technical issues have meant that the armour has already been delayed by 12 months, but it appears they are past all of that now.

Yes on Italians eventually (Peter is working on NW Europe first, then probably Eastern Front). As to compatibility, I wouldn't put Baccus and GHQ together, the infantry aren't close enough for my liking - GHQ are akin to H&R in size, and Baccus are bigger than H&R. On the vehicles front, Baccus' vehicles are bigger than GHQ ones too, definitely noticeably so.

Thanks for this.  Very useful.  I was thinking of GHQ AVFs but if too small, I will wait.

A good game can be had with existing Baccus  Rolls Royce.  the 4.5 inch howitzer and 3.7 mountain guns.

All that is missing is the CV33s.  I could give the Iraqis a few FT-17s  :)  Probably more useful !

Uniforms -  the Iraqi headdress was the Khuda - "a bit like the 1879 British Foreign service helmet". I could use the Baccus British Colonials ?

Would the WW1 Turks be a better fit?

Funny Nick,  I had thought of WW1 Turks - they would have the inherent potential of being used "as themselves" in WW1 games.

The RAF Abyssinian Levies wore a slouch hat - no prizes for guessing their proxy.

Hello Sunray

Always pleasant to see another wargame butterfly flitting to a new project  :D :D

You know there is an Osprey CAM165 that deals with this theatre?

For CV33s Irregular makes one, I can't comment on quality or size compared to others but it could 'fill' a hole. Irregular figures while not the best examples of their type can look ok after painting.

Shapeways has lots of relevant aircraft,

Edit. Just had a look around and both Heroics and Ross and GHQ (MM) make cv33s (actually 35s). Only Crossley armoured car I could find was an expensive one at Shapeways.

Cheers, Happy Trails.

Hello Victor !  :)

You are up early this morning.  Always cheers me up to read your posts.
Many thanks for the excellent tips and suggestions.
Caliver Books sells Alan Hamilton's book "A wargamer's guide to the campaign in Iraq 1941" for £15
To be honest, I was hoping to keep the budget for figures/AFVs as 6mm lets you release the hoards across the table, and get way beyond a glorified skirmish.

Thanks for the intel.  Take care old friend.

I've recently finished a number of battlegroups in 6mm.
My preferences are...
AFV - CnC
Artillery of all sorts - GHQ
Infantry -  Baccus & the new H&R figures.

So far I've done three for Tunisia, Italians, American & British Paras.  The Italians are H&R and the Americans & Brits are Baccus.

I like both of the new Baccus & H&R ranges, although I wouldn't mix them as the Baccus are slightly larger.  The benefit of the new H&R ranges is that you can buy exactly what's needed as they are sold by the strip as well as in groups.

Thanks for this.  When you say Baccus are slightly larger, are they exaggerated heads like Adler or long legged like GHQ (which are 7mm) ?

I checked the UK dealer for CnC-  nice images but nothing in  stock    :(

Sunray,

No the baccus heads are not oversized.

Here's some of my Baccus US infantry.

and my H&R Italians.

Unfortunately the guy who owns/runs CnC is retiring and the fate of his business is still up in the air.  There appears to have been a mad dash to buy stock.  Me included. :-[

Sunray

Thanks for taking the time/effort to share these images.  I have found some Italian H&R in my son's boxes (and H&R MTBs in 1/300 !! :)

Men don't come in even 6ft sizes, and you can get away with a bit of green stuff padding under the base.

So you confess to the disappearance of CnC stock ? Reminds me of a North Down "dealer" whose 15mm business was always on the edge of closing - but then recovered after he cleared the shelves at the show.  :(

Not all the stock.  Someone did beat me to the bits I wanted here in the UK.  Although I did get some of them from a German vendor.

The images come from my website.

LegionsIVHire in Canada have licked up certain lines of the CinC stock.  Do not know if they have got the infantry though.

I hope it is OK putting a link to another business here.  If not please remove or let me know and I will.
