I had a Vietnam game last night and just as an experiment I put together a playlist for the game. It was mostly ambient noises that are supposed to relax you like jungle noises, heavy rain etc with classic 'Nam era music like Fortunate Son, War, the theme tune to Tour of Duty and that kind of thing. I also added in some actual Vietnam war footage sounds like helicopters landing and bursts of gunfire. Ride of the Valkyries was in there, naturally!

Talking to my opponent afterwards we both found it added a lot to the atmosphere and it's convinced me to try to do some more for WWII and other genres. I just wondered if anyone else had given this a go?

Not noises, but period music.  I like it in moderation.

Have put on French period music for SYW games. The stuff is generally pretty bland "wallpaper" music, which is suitable enough for background. Let's face it, only a musical moron would play preludes and fugues while doing anything else. Or Wagner, mind you.

WE were never forgiven for a loop of ride of the Valkires at the Triples when our marines arrived in a shed load of CH-46's.

For British Army, has to be pipe band music or Trooping the Colour soundtrack. 8)

Any excuse to slam the Boro eh!?  Luckily I've been at shows nearly every weekend since the start of September, so I don't know they've conceded til I get back in the van after the show.  And by that point, I'm too tired to care...!

I'm expecting more orders from you next season though, what with all the empty weeknights you'll have from not being in Europe...

Only if the music is themed to the period you're casting

Occasionally, the S&M album with the San Francisco Philharmonic is excellent.

Unfortunately not, this is what was on last night:

Nice little record there Leon  m/

When roleplaying we always have movietracks on, including LOTR, or sometimes Carl Orff.  When wargaming I prefer no music or some easy listening.  When being artistic  ;) I'm listening to Kate Bush or Laïs, it really helps.

Best moments of my life: in my little painting room, heater way up, snow in the garden, and a bit of medieval polyphonic choir on the CD player!

Here's some Laïs!

Not music exactly but when I used to play Moderns years ago the owner of the house had a large pot and wooden spoon next to him.  Everytime one of our Soviet tanks would shoot and then have the shot bounce off the M1, he would hit the pot with the spoon and go 'PING'.
