Martin and I drove across to Warfare at Reading on the Sunday with my 1912 Balkans War game. I'd previously demonstrated this period using Chain of Command, but this year I was using The Men Who Would be Kings by Dan Mersey. Although the rules a written for 19th century colonial conflicts, I've found they work very well for the early 20th century as well. The First and Second Balkans Wars, with their huge variety of troop types and qualities, are easily covered with these adaptable rules. Later in the day we were joined by Henry to help out and allow for some wandering time/loo breaks.

I did call by the Pendraken stand, but Leon seemed to be all by himself and dealing with customers!

Cool looking game. Definitely sounds like the kind of war that TMWWBKs would work for - its hardly the most detailed of rulesets after all.

I'd forgotten it includes a skirmish option, does this simply halve the size of units, so they have the shooting power, and half the wounds? This is perhaps the laziest question ever as the book is only just out of arm's reach!

With half size units, as you roll dice per figure in combat/shooting (unlike the rest of Rampant stable where it is 12 or 6 dice at full/half strength), it reducing the number of hits you are likely to receive, but then you have less men to start with.

Ta. So things will crack along then as units will be quite brittle.

We find game with two 24 point armies usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Mind you I played two games with 3 players in just under 2 hours the other evening.
