Ok, the aircraft and the ships/boats and the scenery are sorted.  Want to use BKC with a supplement for naval engagements.

Peter Jones recommendation was to simply halve the weapon ranges.   Does this work Ok ?

Bases. Thinking about 2 AVFs per 20 mm x 20 mm base.  Then I saw 1 AFV on a 10mm x 15mm .  Would work better in Built Up Areas with houses about 20mm apart.   Infantry and guns ??  5 figures on a 10mm x 15mm,  2HMGs on the same base ?  What size for command ?

What do you guys find works best ?  Its that balance between being optically pleasing, fitting with the scenery and not being too fiddly.  =)

Use what looks good. Sorry not very informative I know, but pretty much standard practice. I'd have a base size that comfortably accommodates a platoon of vehicles - 3 - 5 vehicles. Do artillery as fits to that, so 1-4 guns I would think.

My 3mm tanks etc are on 30mm squares, 40mm squares, and on small FoW bases, depending on which period we're talking about. I like having several stands of infantry and 3+ vehicles on each stand.

My thanks to Ian and Nick.  ;)   Period wise its 20th century.  One game set for 1938-40, the other for 1950s. Both set in Latin America/Carrabin.
My Oddzial Osmy models WW1 & 2 Germans with the stahlhelm will proxy nicely for a number of Latin American armies!  Its even got e thinking about a late 1950s/60s Spanish scenario with 10mm Germans and Buchon/Me 109

Nick your 30x40 would be great on the German plain, the Steppes or Western Desert.  My first thought was that I need my armour to negotiate streets and narrow costal roads - so minded to go small on the base- Might even go with one tank/AFV.    I have to say I am blown away by the detail on Oddzial 3mm !

Now a lot of the towns are cast on tiles- so don't give to FIBUA and damage.   One solution would be to use the towns as "objectives" - a bit like Rome or Paris - and spare them the battle damage ?

My urban bases are modular - I use something like 120mm square bases with 30mm roads going through them, have 5mm pavements (sidewalks), and have buildings on 40mm square bases that can slot into place in whatever configuration I need (I have a church and churchyard that's a 40x80, and maybe one or two others like that). That way if I want to have a unit in a house, I can replace the house 40mm square with the unit 30mm square.

The link should take you to a picture of some of my house bases (the urban base they sit on isn't in show - it was intended to show  someone the size difference between Brigade Models 2mm stuff (the desert stuff in the background) and the 3mm stuff from Bay Area Yards and Simply 6. There are a couple of bases of my 3mm desert war stuff in there too on small FoW bases, with a strip at the back to mark what the unit is.

This album shows the basic design of the urban bases and a load of my 3mm buildings: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjsB5YXe

I ended up using the designs in the second to last pic (the 4 bases showing the t, crossroad, corner and cul-de-sac, as well as several with just a road going through them with houses etc on the two sides).

I use 40x30 with 3 tanks or 3 AT guns or 3MG's etc. Looks nice with a bit of spacing. With some of the early war stuff The bases can look a little sparse at times
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

As with any scale, the key to a playable game is consistency in the base size. Many thanks for the  images Nick.  Most impressive AND enjoyable eye candy.

Buildings are a nuisance - I usually use ruins. Best suggestion is to have built up areas, with preferably a defined base. Any element on the base is using the area as cover. Works since the scale is not one to one. Note that you should still allow the road bonus whilst moving through it.

Thanks for this.   Followed a battle rep in 3mm Tiny Tanks blog, I was impressed by the use of 1/2" x 5/8" for small units and 1" x 5/8" for larger - As you rightly say, its personal preference as long as its consistent.

And I do like my scenic - the optic of a well painted building.   The first time I saw an N Gauge railway layout in a shop window, I wanted to roll my tanks through it.
