It's not "nicked" it's "rescued" - wouldn't want the Amis to capture it after all and it was just abandoned .... err ... next to some Wehrmacht officers who weren't using it

After Torch an old family friend was flying Dakotas into an airfield in Tunisia and after a few flights the crew noticed a jeep always parked in the same place. On the next flight they brought some planks. They were half way through loading the jeep when an irate US Colonel threatened to have them arrested for stealing his jeep. It was politely pointed out that he had failed to immobilise the jeep. After some negotiations the jeep was returned to its parking place in exchange for US helmets for all the crew and some chocolate and nylons.

I am the current custodian of one of those helmets
