BBB Bash Day 2017

I shall be off line for the next four days as I am off down to Oxford for the BBB Bash Day. I will be running Shiloh and will post a report on my return. Bash Day is only on the Saturday, but as I've never got out of transport when in Oxford I'm taking the advantage of having a look round (still got to do Cambridge, in fact all of East Anglia, as well).

Greetings

It was a very good day. 

I commanded part of the not very glorious French army at Mars le Tour and Gravelotte. It was my first time playing BBB and many thanks to Crispin for setting up and umpiring and helping make things happen as well as to my fellow French commander Chris and to my Prussian opponents Glyn and Mark. 

The downside of playing Mars le Tour and Gravelotte back to back was the time taken - one scenario is 11 and the other 10 turns and resetting up the game for the afternoon took a little while. We were the last out of the hall at a bit after 7pm.  So I took a few random photos of games  it did not have much of a chance to have aclose look at anything else.  A really good if tiring day.

It was a terrific day, with much Pendraken loveliness in action. Big thank yous to all who took part (hi Edward!), especially the GMs who laid on such beautiful games.

As far as this thread in particular is concerned, thank you to Forum stalwarts Leman and Shedman for travelling so far, putting on fine games and posting a nice AAR. Great to see you again, and I look forward to the next time!

Had a bit of trouble with my camera at the Bash Day, but nevertheless I still managed to get five photos before the thing just died on me. With regard to the two games, the result of a draw was the same in both, but the getting there was quite different in the afternoon from the morning, largely owing to the morning game producing some of the unluckiest dice rolling I've ever witnessed (bad luck chaps) resulting in the Confederate attack being rather tardy and disjointed to start with. Needless to say the night turn appeared, and then so did Buell's reinforcements. However, the Union were unable to retake Shiloh church.

In the afternoon game the Rebs were off like a shot, but unfortunately for them their artillery support was very slow and spent the bulk of the game limbered (so my working on the limbers on the Thursday night before the games paid off). The Union did manage to gain control of Shiloh Church this time, but before the game ended the Confederates retook it - those guns had finally got into action.

The Bash day was remarkable fun, so a big thankyou to Chris and Cris and everyone else responsible for putting it on. It is the only time I've attended a wargame event dedicated to just one set of rules, but what a success.

All the figures, plus the gunboat and Pittsburgh Landing are 1/600 figures from the Peter Pig Hammerin' Iron range, except command figures on unit bases, limbers and caissons and artillerymen on the heavy gun base by Oddzial Osmy, Shiloh Church in 1/600 free from Altar of Freedom website, roads and streams by Supreme Littleness, forestry by Woodland Scenics, camps and the metallic woods 2mm by Irregular, and base cloth by Deepcut..

Next time we will plan it so that you don't just gamemaster all day but also get to play someone else's game!
