National Army Museum - Waiouru

I passed through Waiouru a couple of weeks ago and went into the National Army Museum there for the first time in many years so took a few pics. They are taken with my camera phone and the lighting is fairly harsh so apologies if they are not the best.

A few fairly random shots....can post more if anyone's interested.

Got to say its a really good museum - as good as anything I saw in Europe during my trip over there in 2015. If you are ever in NZ and are passing through Waiouru take the time to have a look. Entry is only $15.

You can't miss the Museum as Waiouru is a very small town in the middle of the North Island and it has a very distinctive "gate guardian" in the form of a Centurion sitting on the front lawn......



It has been the home to the NZ Army's Training Group for many years. The whole area is volcanic scrub land that can't be farmed. The local scenary is also fairly spectacular - Tongariro National Park with its volcanoes.......Mt Ruapehu (taken on an earlier trip during the winter).

Didn't see any hobbits/elves/orcs etc on the Desert Road DGuy 

Mt Ruapehu is still active, last big eruption was in about 1995(?)

If you want to see Hobbiton its near Matamata about 2.5 hours drive north from Waiouru.

They were running a rather good WW1 themed exhibit when I was there so here are some things from that era:

Thanks Peter. All very cool. My traveling days are over so you have allowed me to see some of the museum - always a treat!

I also have the feeling that most, if not all of the artillery and other bits were still in their original finish, which would be a real plus!!!
