What was the last ruleset you played 2017?

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Basic Impetus 2.0
2) What armies were confronted? - Athens vs. Sparta
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - To a certain extent, played BI 1 a few times, still looking for changes in 2.0
4) Was it the first time do you use the ruleset? - yes
5) How many players were in the game? 1, solo play to look through the rules.

In retrospect, I should have placed fewer, or no, terrain pieces for a practice game. A river running through a large swampy area dominated one side of the table, and a wooded hill the other, with a little broken ground central. As a result I couldn't keep the Groups (which both armies formed) organised.

2) What armies were confronted? -                           made up ones that were flying spaceships

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -            yes, it had a nice glossy finish that was a pleasure to hold. paperback.

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - for what ... swatting flying insects? the club venue was clean, so no need.

5) How many players were in the game? -                  two. Skywalker and Me. Skywalker won. Twice.
Rimmer: "Aliens."

Lister: "Oh God, aliens... Your explanation for anything slightly peculiar is aliens, isn't it?

Rimmer: "Well, we didn't use it all, Lister. Who did?"

Lister: "Rimmer, aliens used our bog roll?"

Yeah, I just had them to hand. Was more interested in the rules (which work just fine).

Our first 'proper game' which went very well and everything flowed nicely. AAR to follow.

2) What armies were confronted? - SYW Austrian vs. Prussian in 28mm.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - not fully comfortable yet. Not helped by the fact that since publication, loads of amendments have been posted on the dedicated forum. But, despite one or two weird situations occurring, the rules still have a lot going for them so I will continue to persevere.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no - fourth time but my first non-solo game.
5) How many players were in the game? - two each side.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

4.No, but hadn't played for about three months.

5. Two players. We played Clash at Kutzdorf, but with a clearly better quality Austrian than Prussian army. In the previous games the Prussians had thrashed the Austrians in this scenario. This time the Prussians were given a severe hiding by the Austrians for not playing a 'super army.' I did this purely to find out what would happen if the Prussians were not as invincible as previously. It was interesting to note that my opponent, after just this one game, was so impressed with the rule mechanics that he wants to buy his own copy of the rules.

     III/66 Fatimid Egyptian 969-1171AD, III/74b Other Seljuq Turkish 1037-1276AD, IV/6a Syrian 1092-1286AD vs
     IV/1a Komnenan Byzantine 1071-1142AD, IV/2 Cilician Armenian 1071-1375AD, IV/7 Early Crusader 1096-1128AD

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? – third game of BBDA 3.0, second multi-player game
5) How many players were in the game? – four, two of our regular group couldn't make it

The Crusaders supported by the Armenians and Byzantines invaded Syria.



A couple of turns in the Byzantines (top left) are advancing lead by their Light Horse. The Armenians (centre left) have lost the race for the central gentle hill but their Bow have drawn first blood, an element of Turkish Cavalry. The Crusader (bottom left) Knights are slowly moving out to the flank behind a screen of Spear and Crossbows.

The Egyptian (top right) foot have grabbed the central gentle hill while their mounted deploy to cover the right flank. The Turkish (centre right) cavalry, including their General, have found themselves facing a wall of Armenian and Crusader Bow with only limited foot to support them. The Turkish Light Horse wait in column for an opportunity. The Syrian (bottom left) Cavalry move forward looking to outflank the Crusader Spear while their limited foot and Light Horse wait in reserve (are stranded due to a lack of PIPs).



The Crusader Knights and Syrian Cavalry clash on the flank, this went on for most of the game with the heavier knights often pushing the cavalry back but getting isolated when following up their success.



The Turkish cavalry have redeployed to the other side of the central gentle hill away from the bow and into a gap that has opened between the Byzantines and the Armenians. The Turkish Light Horse have also moved to right sensing opportunities. Casualties, mainly from Bow, are mounting for both the Turks and Syrians.

The Armenian Knights move to their left to support the Byzantines who are feeling threatened by the advancing Egyptian Cavalry.



The Byzantine Bow in the scrub are disrupting the Turkish and Egyptian Cavalry. The outnumbered Byzantine Light Horse are about to be overwhelmed by the Egyptian Cavalry.



The Egyptian Cavalry has destroyed the Byzantine Light Horse and are making progress against the Byzantine Cavalry. The Byzantine Knights on the small hill are not in a position to intervene.



With the Byzantines to their left about to become demoralised the Armenian infantry desperately charge up the hill into the Egyptian Spear and Blades. Even with overlaps the results are as expected, one element of Armenian Spear dead and various recoils along the line, the Egyptian blade following up.



At the top the Egyptian Cavalry mop up enough of the demoralised Byzantine Cavalry to break that command. With both the Armenians and the Crusaders having lost 3 elements, including Bow to an element of Syrian Horde :o this is enough to break the army.

On the other side both the Syrians and Turks has lost 3 elements and so were one element away from demoralisation. A close fought win to the Syrians, Turks and Egyptians.
I was pleasantly surprised when asked if we could play a third game next week. It looks like the rules and armies are a hit :) :D

2) What armies were confronted? - One retinue of medieval thugs mainly mounted on horses vs. another retinue of medieval heroes (guess which side I was on) mainly with bows (in 28mm).
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - no
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - yes.
5) How many players were in the game? - two.

I paid a visit to Glasgow Wargames Club and was kindly invited to participate in a game of Lion Rampant. First game, not my period and not read the rules before but thanks to Rab (thanks for giving up your game) and my opponent Steve's expert guidance (and patience) I was able to experience an enjoyable set of rules and participate in an enjoyable game. Result? It didn't matter - but for those who are interested, I was told it was a "winning draw." 
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.
