May 1944 - somewhere on the Russian Front - The Germans were defending down short side of a LONG (14 ft) table with a mixture of tanks/SP Guns and Artillery and infantry against a swath of Soviet armour. Apart from one Panther commander who definitely earnt a postumous Iron Cross 1st Class the Germans couldn't hold the Russians in the end despite feilding 88's,Tiggers, Panthers and even a couple of Elephants that turned up late in the game but never got into action even advancing at top speed every turn  :( ???

Well we actually started this enjoyable game in 2016 but was played over several weeks which was a good excuse to get out some of Roy's late war 20mm armour.

And very enjoyable game it was  :)

We fought it over three Saturday evenings and on the first two it was looking a very hard task for the limited Soviet armour, particularly when the heavy German reserve started arriving. Fortunately the Elefants were still arriving when the game ended  ;D

My comrade's T34/85s and KV-2s must have got plenty of practise against that Panther as they went on to roll some great dice to deal with the German reserve ;)
And I do mean great dice, under 5 on percentage dice followed up with a 6 on a D6 to penetrate :o He did that at least four times :o :o :o :o

In contrast one of my T34/76s managed to hit a Pz IV at 80m in a wood, just ;D

"T34/85s and KV-2s"   :o :-/  =)

Sounds like a fun game and a fairly historical result!

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game?

Ten More Sons!

2) What forces were involved?

Jagellonian Poles vs Vasa Swedes

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset?

Very

4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset?

No

5) How many players were in the game?

3

6) Did you maintain your characteristically high standards of command?

Honestly, no. I made several serious blunders and was lucky that the enemy didn't notice an opening. A heavy cavalry army must attack, lads. Dithering will get you into trouble.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Sword & Spear 2
2) What armies were confronted? - Anglo-Saxon vs Huns
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Pretty much
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No, but first time with an opponent
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

A couple of intro games for Dave, which went well and he picked up the rules quickly. Next week a proper game, with a scenario and the terrain placement rules etc. Great ruleset and highly recommended.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Black Powder
2) What armies were confronted? - Union vs Rebs
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

It was going really well for me, as the Union player, I had managed to get my troops into a strong defensive position on the objective and repulsed the first Confederate attack. Then in a madness of overconfidence I counter attacked, hoping to finish off a damaged brigade and break it, only to lose half a brigade of fresh infantry in a single move! :'(

Curse you, fickle morale dice! >:( :P

Got two games in yesterday afternoon.

First of all

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Twilight of The Sun King - ECW/TYW variant
2) What armies were confronted? - Royalists vs Parliamentarians, Battle of Edgehill, 1642
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No but this is a new variant and first time with this opponent
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

This was a refight of Edgehill using the draft Twilight variant. The Parliamentarians initially stood on the defence on the ridge they started on as the Royalists moved to attack them. The Royalist had moved their reserve cavalry to their left wing and so opened their attack there. This got immediate results and the Parliamentarians sent their reserve to this sector. For the rest of the game the Parliamentarians struggled to contain the Royalists here and sent more units to bolster this sector. They also launched an attack in the centre, the infantry, where they seemed ot have the advantage and in an attempt to break these before the wing went. Unfortunately they continued to moved units out to the left to try to stablise this area. This proved to be an error as it weakened the centre and stopped what happened on the other flank. In any case the Parliamentarian attacked in the centre and made some headway.

The game now entered a bloody phase with all but the extreme right (Royalist right) being engaged but as nearly all the units were raw they often got quickly defeated. The attrition on the attacking Parliamentarian centre from this and sending units to the left soon left massive gaps. With the end near the Parliamentarians launched a desperate attack on the right in a last ditch attack in a very quiet sector. This quickly lead to defeat for the Parliamentarian units but also the victorious Royalist cavalry then disappeared into the distance in pursuit. Ironically they had not done this on the left because of the fresh Parliamentarian units sent there. It might have been better for the Parliamentarians to have let the Royalist pursue on the other flanks as well. But that will have to wait for another time.

Shortly after this the Parliamentarians failed their army morale and the battle ended. It was a short bloody affair, 2 hours to set up/play, but felt right. As this game finished so quickly we decided to try a TYW battle.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Twilight of The Sun King - ECW/TYW variant
2) What armies were confronted? - Protestants vs Catholics TYW (roughly based on Breitenfeld)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No but this is a new variant and first time with this opponent
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

So the second game was a more ad hoc affair featuring armies about half the size of those at Breitenfeld 1632. The Protestants (a mixture of Swedish and Germans) defended and the Catholics (a mixture of Imperialists and Catholic League) attacked. The Swedes blocked off their right (or at least they thought so) by occupying a village in front of the line. They planned to move the cavalry from their right to the other flank and roll up the Catholic line from there. The Protestant left cavalry moved forward to threaten the opposing cavalry.  They were outnumbered but knew the other Protestant cavalry were on the way. The Catholic infantry (mixed tercios) lumbered forward and their cavalry on the Protestant right moved up to the now enemy occupied village.

The main phase of the fighting now ensued. On the left the Protestant cavalry held initially then as they were reinforced they switched to the attack. But the Catholic cuirassiers proved tough opponents and progress was slow. It was also slowed as the Protestants diverted some of the reinforcing cavalry to the centre. In the centre for some reason the Protestants who were in a great set up decided to abandon this! The fighting here was very close. The deep early tercios and Swedish infantry brigades battered each other with the Swedes getting the upper hand, assisted by some cavalry support. While next to this the TYW type tercios were slowly getting the best of the German allied regiments.

The game was very balanced but with the Protestants having the upper hand. They had messed up a little with the self inflicted disruption in the centre and not concentrating totally on destroying the left. But for some reason all the Catholic cavalry on the Protestant right had just stopped in front of the occupied village and done nothing - the Protestant units here were holding off 4 times their number without doing anything. Or at least this was the case for most of the battle. With things looking grim the Catholic player suddenly decided he better do something with his unused units. He left pinning units in front of the village and sent the rest round the village into the rear of the Protestant infantry. The Catholic cavalry on the left broke but the decisive move of the left quickly proved decisive in the centre.

Two good games and the crucial aspect, getting the character of the various units, looks good.

Not to call Sunjester a liar.  But he's a liar.  I believe this is the last game he played, assuming the one above is the one against Orcs he told me about.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Fighting Sail
2) What armies were confronted? - French v British
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - First time in a live game with Sunjester.  Had a mini solo game - 2v2 - the night before just to make sure I understood the mechanisms
5) How many players were in the game? 2 - Me and Sunjester.

We enjoyed them.  They lack the detail of other sets, attracting criticism from 'serious players'.  As I use the 'Pirates' collectable ships to play with that also annoys some of them.

The Napoleonic Naval I've been using is Kiss Me Hardy.  FS lacks things such as sail setting, target rigging or hull.  However in KMH 4 ships is enough for one player, and the game takes 2-3 hours.  Our first FS game was 200 points - 4 ships each - and took an hour (including Sj learning the rules.  We then had a 'standard' 300 pt game with captains, 6 ships which took about 1 3/4 hours.  2 players could knock off a large engagement in a club evening easily.

Unlike KMH there's virtually no book-keeping, you need an 'anchor token' denoting a ship moving slowly (its not anchored - its more 'badly set sails' I think), and a way to mark the damage on each ship - we use the 'Pirates' coins (Ships and coins reunited after about 8 years!).  There are 'personality ships' that have better stats and special abilities, and named admirals that give greater bonuses - Putting Nelson on the Victory is about 206 points!

Tweaks that could be made -  'Explosions' called Criticals instead - Explosion is too dramatic a term!
Add bowchaser rules - 1 Gunnery in fore and aft arcs (the Raking arcs) maximum of short range.
Maybe tweak the damage 'deck' - the resolution table - so you can fire at masts or hull - Mast shots give an anchor token on Hits = Saves (0 hits, but not more saves than hits), but shift all other results up by one.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.
