Crusades yesterday, HEP! rules, Franks vs Ayyubids, two players, familiar, went smoothly.

But if you're leading an army whose one strength is a good heavy cavalry charge, and this then fails to come off, you're in for a long and painful stagger to defeat. Things went wrong when I realised my turcopoles were a bit too far ahead of the knights, so tried to withdraw them a little; one panicked and fled, and I was left with one unit too few to protect the flanks of the military orders.
It went downhill from there. :(

5) How many players were in the game? - Two of us, and seven or eight punters across the day

We took our participatory 28mm Trojan Wars semi-mythical set up to WMMS yesterday, and enticed a fair few people passing into playing. Lots of excellent games, terrible dice rolling, brilliant tactics and a narrow win overall for the Acheans. My highlight was mighty Ajax getting pulled off his chariot and beaten down by a mob of murderous Trojan foot men. Whilst in another game his warband had such terrible activations the enemy ran all the way across the field of glory, surrounded one member of his warband and murdered him so gruesomly Ajax, Teucer and all his men legged it without even fighting!

Good game, ideal for a "drop in and play" convention game as it takes 90 seconds to explain the rules and about twenty minutes to play.

As part of our Operation Mars Luchesa River Valley campaign we played out Col Becker's dawn attack on Galitskina and Bol'shoe Boiratino 6th December 1942. The Gemans did a flanking attack at Gailtskina . The soviets saw an opportunity to blunt the Germans with an armoured attack on the exposed German flank. Unfortunately, the German armour with their longer range and better command roles left the Soviet armour as burning hulks. Eventually the panzer grenadiers took Galitskina and the Soviets, now over their break point, were unable to take back the town.

Another cracking game, one that was even better than last weeks :). For once we finished all of the turns and it literally went down to the last die roll. AAR to follow.

We are still getting the odd rule wrong but this was a fine light hearted 3 sided game.

Awesome! This is such a small scenario that just a couple of extreme dice can seriously skew the outcome, so it's great to hear that you had such a tight game. Can't wait for the AAR!

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - nope, but I was talking the other two through it, even if the French army was nearly as old as me!
5) How many players were in the game? - 3

French attacked up hill with two keils of Swiss pikes against Henry VIII and the Duke of Suffolk's retinue bills.  The Swiss lost. The French had a cavalry superiority in both numbers, ability and armour, but failed to capitalise on it (in fact losing two units), while the Tudor archers were about to deal with French crossbows rather nastily too.
Big win for Henry, he will be insufferable now!

    III/66 Fatimid Egyptian, III/74b Other Seljuq Turkish, IV/6a Syrian v
    IV/1a Komnenan Byzantine, IV/2 Cilician Armenian, IV/7 Early Crusader
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - very
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - no
5) How many players were in the game? - 5, 3 Muslim - 2 Christian

The Christians defended Byzantium and deployed very limited terrain which ended up playing no significant part in the battle.

The Christians deployed in the order listed with a solid line of spears, dismounted knights and bow from the centre to their right. The Byzantine cavalry covered the left flank.

The Muslims massed on their right with the Syrians on their right, then the Egyptians and the Seljuqs facing the Armenians in the centre. Their plan was to overwhelm one Christian force at a time. This plan started very well aided by the Byzantine managing to throw three 1s out of about 7 combat dice in the first round of combat :o

The remaining Byzantines were quickly destroyed or removed from the field. The Armenian Knights crashed into the Eqyptians and had early success leading to badly disrupted lines and the eventual demoralisation of the Eqyptians.

While this was going on the Crusaders from the Christian right slowly marched unopposed swinging to their left towards the battle. The Armenian Spear also advanced pressing the Seljuqs cavalry and Light Horse. Where the Armenians had success the Seljuqs fled to return again when the Seljuqs had success the Armenian Spear grudgingly gave up a little ground.

The Armenain Knights redeployed to oppose the slowly advancing Syrians (poor PIPs) hindered by Seljuq bow. This combined with Seljuq bow forcing an Armenian Spear to withdraw allowed the Seljuq cavalry to flank the Armenian Spear. As Armenian casualties mounted the leading Crusaders hit the flank of the Seljuqs as the Armenian Spear continued to press forward.

The Armenians, supported by the Crusaders managed to kill enough Seljuqs to demoralise them before the Syrians could engage giving a narrow victory to the Christians #:-S

Neither the Syrians or the Crusaders had taken any casualties ;)
The Crusader pilgrims following their holy goose managed to advance onto a gentle hill on the right of the field well away from any combat ;)
