Right men.  First N Korean T34s and BA64s arriving. Any tips on paint colours, shades,  weathering and finish ?

Matt J

I was going to use same palette as my NVA tanks

but as yet I'm undecided what flock and base technique to use  :-\

also not sure on camouflage foliage, from photos i've seen not much as there was less risk of air attack in the early stages?

Outstanding artwork Matt.  Two pieces of info that ay be useful:

1. The KPA T34s were painted in standard Soviet dark green that faded quickly to a medium green. (VAL 894 or VAL 893 ?)

2. If tanks are intended for blitz style attack, little thought is given to foliage/camouflage as the dust and engine smoke will betray movement and bushes on the deck will get in the way, and on occasions have proved a fire hazard from proximity to hot exhaust pipes.
. The faster you barrel along in a tank on a dirt road, the greater column of dust generated so cammo is a waste of time.  Soviet tactics in this era did not include 'overwatch' which requires discreet cammo .  Outside that, cammo takes a lot of time on an AVF and is usually reserved for long stay, leaguer or hull down defence.
Also, there is no indication that KPA anticipated the fast and furious UN air war.  No evidence of cammo nets being carried.

Recon vehicles like  BA 64 and Gaz jeep are likely to have more attempts at foliage camouflage.  If in reccie platoon you have a well camouflaged vehicle and when you want to observe you drive headlong into the bushes/cover/available foliage and blend until a comprehensive surveillance of the AoI (Area of Interest) has been conducted.

Would you go with 894 0r 893 as a base colour?

Matt J

To my shame I'm a GW paint man so its Castellan Green  :D

but it looks to be a similar match to Valejo 893.

Maybe we should start a Korean war painting diaries thread (similar to tale of 4 gamers but Korean war specific) might generate some more interest.... or will it be me you and FSN shouting into the void  :D

I think the most recent Korean War to grab my interest ended in 1598! :)

However, it has been interesting to follow the current discussions.

What base would you recommend for UK and American armour in the early (Pusan pocket) period of the war?

Matt J

Hi Sunray

I'm going for something like this -

I have platoon of Chaffees to paint up. I'm having a look in my local GW tomorrow to find a good match for a base colour, though I'm open to suggestions.

I'm looking forward to adding the ferocious beast artwork  :)

Looks like Deneb Stone might be close though it's probably not called that anymore
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Matt J

I went with something with a bit more green in it.
