I have used Beneath the Lily Banners for just over year.
I find them very playable, they model the period of LoA very well, plus they have an appendix of sample armies.
And they lend themselves quite well to 10mm.
Look them up on the Beneath the Lily Banners website.
Outside of a dog a book is mans' best friend.
Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

That is the first positive review I have heard about these rules. Most people I know who have played them found them too dense to be enjoyable.

Hullo,
I've found that the way you are introduced to a ruleset has an impact on how complex and/or enjoyable you find the game to be. As we have a pretty insular gaming club / scene we mostly have to figure out how certain rules work on our own. This may be the reason why I enjoy simpler or more elegant game designs nowadays. That, or early dementia :) Anyway, I have not played, read or seen BtlB so this is not a comment on them per se.

One of our little group got the rules, painted up figures and inveigled three of us in to a game. We got a turn and a half in and were enjoying it so much we played Robo-Rally instead. That may, of course, be more of a comment on the group than the rules!

We felt that it might be a good set of rules for die hard fans of the period but we felt we were wilting due to information overload. Maybe we're just too old a set of dogs to learn new tricks. :(

BTLB (1st Ed.) lost me early on too. Eye candy was great but could have been more clearly written IMO (e.g., in my first game, after a round of melee between two opposing squadrons and following the melee procedure to the letter, there was only one surviving figure! Thankfully a later melee example in the book appeared to confirm this was not the intention of the rules!). There is of course a 2nd Edition now and obviously they work well for many others - maybe I need to play with someone who knew the rules really well. 

As regards old dogs, Ithoriel - possibly - but maybe it is because we've read so many rule systems over the years, we can pretty quickly 'sus' out when a rule system is not working for us.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.
